I was thinking about this issue, and had a couple ideas for some alternatives.

1. What about using a system where everyone was given a copy of the item dropped? This way, there isn't an issue of ping and/or ranged vs. melee on who can click on the item first.

2. What if there was something in place that would randomly assign the item(s) dropped to a/the player(s) in a group? I say random purposely as in there wouldn't be a pattern in who the item(s) are assigned to. This way, the ping and ranged vs. melee issue isn't there.

I could almost see # 2 is being a possibility, but #1? are u kidding me?

ahhhhh /facepalm /

yeah, i was just throwing out some possible alternatives (yes, that first one really is pretty bad. i think the second one does sound like a viable alternative.

rather than just FFA, limit how many items a person can grab based on number of people in party... so maybe in an 8 player party, you can only pick up 5 items per area for higher level areas, and then people have to think about what they're going to take

the problem with this is that you don't want to pass up an okay item in hopes of a better one only to not have it drop. this seems more like a modified FFA vs. a true FFA

Hmm this would indeed stop the click-fest a bit.

I think I just want a game like this to have that open rpg element where players can be evil if they choose to and do what they please. Maybe I'm just an evil griefer afterall.

No one seems to understand the adrenaline rush you get from pressing alt and seeing that colored item name bouncing to the floor.

Sure we do, we just don't like it, especially when we're just unable to compete with the master clickers out there.

And yeah, Tenka, when I posted the optional stuff, I meant it being game by game or group by group. No way would it work player by player.

one people hit their limit they would just leave the group.

this really should be a non issue. offer both choices, be it seperate servers or a party option
A free for all is ok. But i prefer the personalized one because there will be botter again. There is no online game of this kind where no bots exist.
two opinions and then we'll have two option in party system and it'll depend on the leaders

- if leaders wanna FFA, then that's it.

- if leaders wanna another option, then that's it.

Nobody can force us to join a party we feel sick of it, rite? :D

Some who's supporting non-FFA just asking for an option in party system, NOT REMOVE THIS FEATURE! So you guys don't need to argue so much about this issue. A coin always has two sides :P
GGG shouldn't fall into this trap. Your target audience is certain...
He who fights with monsters
might take care lest he thereby
become a monster.
It actually doesn't need to be a party option, it could be a personal choice in the options menu. If I choose to see my own loot, then that's all I see. Everyone else who doesn't use the option in the party fights over loot.
I am a poor freezingly cold soul
So far from where
I intended to go

you are right, they should not fall into the trap of offering more options so a wider variety of player will want to play their game. good call there buddy
