Haven't really ever commented on lab, but I hate it.

If you have a source about that statement of Chris, I'd be curious to see it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vwi6U7MojDQ Go to minute 39 and hear him talk for about a minute or so or read the spoiler. But i suggest everyone to hear Chris saying it. Note that this was when the labyrinth was implemented and game remained exactly the same and still he classifies ascendancies as NOT OPTIONAL.

Spoiler
The team is aware of the fact that it can be if you dont like the labyrinth having to do it three times is a bit of a chore, and if this was entirely side content with just the enchantments then it could just be a thing that if you dont want to do it you dont do it just like atziri or you know those kind of things entirely optional, BUT we have put ascendancy classes in there.... he then goes talking how a 3rd party site (reddit) is helping people to ascend...

Thanks, so indeed GGG does not consider the labyrinth entirely optional.
On a purely litteral/technical side, it kinda is, but if GGG's standpoint is that it's a big enough customization element so that it is not considered optional, then we can go with the fact that it isn't.
I'm also fine with that to be honest, I do not have a problem with the lab gating the ascendancy classes ( The few characters that I got to merc in HC during Perandus - and ripped because of brainfart or connection problems - beat the normal and cruel one without too much troubles, and I think that I'm not very good at it ), it just seems fair.

About the consecutive balance changes, I was looking for his quote about the new mobs in cruel and merc being something planned from before ascendancy ( I think it's in the 3 part awakening ZiggyD Q&A session ) but it's kinda long so could not find it back that there.

I just don't get what we disagree on. When is it smart to not take an ascendacy class?

We disagree on the fact that not everyone plays for power/efficiency/min-maxing purposes, because this is but a game and everyone can find whatever he/her is looking for =) ( and calling them stupid is rude and unnecessary ).
SSF is not and will never be a standard for balance, it is not for people entitled to getting more without trading.

As someone who plays self-found/solo/HC I entirely agree. What I enjoy in PoE is building my own characters and finding or crafting all my own stuff. (I have found one exalt so far in Prophecy which I'll ultimately use to craft something, instead of using it buy what would no doubt be a much better item.) I'm perfectly happy to let other people faceroll high-tier maps with build-defining uniques; I don't need or want them.

But there is the problem with the Labyrinth. Perhaps GGG introduced it because they think traps are so much fun, or more likely they introduced it because a large part of the game seems to have become: (a) buy uber gear (gauge your build by how many exalts it costs); (b) spam your favorite aoe. Well, if that's how someone wants to play, I have no problem with it. But I already play pretty slowly and, as a result of all that, it feels like I can no longer play the game the way I want to play it, which does not include the Labyrinth. I do not want spend time building characters who don't have access to fundamental parts of the game (i.e. the ascendancy classes). Overall, I'm pretty despondent about the direction that PoE is taking (and I've played the game off and on since the closed beta in 2011).

Well the lab looks like an answer to the facerolling kinda brainless high level builds.
Honestly, beating cruel Izaro is not very difficult, even in HC, maybe it will take some practise, but it's entirely doable, self found also ( might need to overlevel it a bit more, granted ).

I think that they wanted people to deserve those ascendancy points, and I do find that quite fair.

Of course it is. The point is I refuse to do it -- I will quit playing PoE first.

Though i agree quiting is the most efficient way to pass the message, core PoE is way to fun to pass because of a shitty content. Even though i greatly like the ascendancies i too refuse to go inside the labyrinth simply cause there is no fun there, in a game i play for that reason.
Inundated with cockroaches, I am

https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/1609216 - labyrinth rework ideas/suggestions
Mine is a SC perspective, I don't do HC because I'm old, slow, and excel at dying . I am a casual player -- I play a lot, mind you, but I don't rush rush rush from pack to pack, room to room, zone to zone.

I play because I like to have fun playing a game I enjoy.

Why I hate the Labyrinth...

#1 Huge time sink. Total disappointment when failing.

I don't rush when I play, regular zones/maps/laby. I smash every breakable, poke around entire zones/maps, pause to smell the daisies, etc. Laby takes me at least 45min (skipping side zones) to over two hours to run. When I die, and loose ALL progress, I tend to just rage quit (such as I just did prior to posting this, 50+ minutes into doing Cruel Laby at level 72).

My suggestions, for SC, is to have a save point after each successful boss fight. So when a player dies, they at least don't have to progress from the absolute beginning. Casual-gamer friendly. Heck, make a new class of play style, HC, SC, and SSC (Super Sissy Core). I'll be the first to join SSC if the Laby got save points.

I do think earning Ascendancy points should be a challenge. The Laby is great for that. But to be slapped in the face with absolute failure after expending a lot of time is just pure frustration for the player. It drives me back to play my Standard League character, or just quit and try again in a day or 3. I'm a SC player, but I feel like I'm governed by HC rules. Much too harsh for my tastes and play style.

This is basically how I play as well. Chris Wilson said that the labyrinth was designed to be 45 to 60 minutes long. I get a whole lot of denigrating hate from the pro-lab crowd when I say that though because then they say, I need to "get guid" or "gid good" or something like that. Anyway, they mean I need to learn how to play. But I hate the labyrinth and so started trying to go faster, at least faster for me. I don't kill all the monsters I run by. I don't touch the pots and I ignore many chests even. I never timed myself but I'll guess twenty minutes or something, with a gold door or two. It reduces the pain some to make it shorter. Don't get me wrong, it is still boring tedious and not fun, just not as painful. GGG still needs to fix it to make the labyrinth optional, at least if they want to ever see another donation from me.
Over 430 threads discussing labyrinth problems with over 1040 posters in support (thread # 1702621) Thank you all! GGG will implement a different method for ascension in PoE2. Retired!
Its literally meant to be speedrun, the leaderboards were a core concept with the labyrinth and they specifically created rewards for the fastest runner on top of explicitly stating that those who run it the fastest will have economic advantages.

Do you thrive off of posting disinformation ?

"Its was originally designed to be 45-60 minutes long" - Said no one ever, certainly not Chris.
