Any opinions voiced on the forums are "meaningless" in the sense that that are biased or, in some fashion, self-selected. People who are vehemently for a SFL will post in these threads, that's true, but those who are vehemently against it will do so likewise.

What a true majority thinks or feels is up to anyone's speculation. My guess is that the majority of players don't think about the question in the first place. They'll play if they have fun (find good drops, enjoy trading), and they'll stop playing if they don't (hit a wall and can't progress, don't want an MMO/trading experience).

People who post on forums are always far more invested than those who just play, so forum opinions are more polarized and generally stronger.

Thanks, Thorien, for putting this together. I don't feel strongly either way about a SFL (but would participate in one), but I appreciate the effort and time you have put in gathering opinions and summarizing the results.

The best way to do this is to randomly whisper people in game who are standing around in town and ask them if they want a SFL. Most of them probably wouldn't know what it is :)

Could you elaborate a bit on that, if you are able? I'm seriously interested.

In what particular ways you believe SFL would hurt GGG financially?

I mean playing self found does not mean playing alone. Game would function mostly if not same as it functions now only instead of screaming "WTB 250+ DPS phys. sword" in trade chat or checking who of poe traders is online you would have to pick the shit from the ground and actually use it. Scary isn't it? What's the big deal?

Edit: Btw. even in a selffound league you can still buy and sell accounts. It happened in D2 and it would happen in PoE.

I think a self found league would improve the game on several aspects:

1* build diversity - i started out a self found templar in domination, got to 77 then decided to reroll to try out a cast on crit reave build i planned but it couldn't work without specific uniques which never dropped for my templar. Especially true for low life builds which are reserved for only the richest or the luckiest, locking out a large part of the players.

2* achievements - everyone likes loot. It is unrewarding to play for months on no end and never drop something you want (be it orb or an unique you need).

3* better crafting - or as some refer to it, gambling. "Crafting" atm is only for super rich who go for the best items. And even then there are threads on forum where people ask for donations since it's just impossible to craft by yourself only.

It doesn't apply for every poster in threads related to SFL, but even if there was a big pool of players that wanted a SFL, a lot of them have very bad logic. Chris knows that, that's what he was trying to say politely in the inc. gamers interview when he stated they wont make a SFL happen : "Some players have asked for a “Self-found mode with trading allowed”, but we have no idea what that means!". As Wittgenstein writed : "What can be said at all can be said clearly; and whereof one cannot speak thereof one must be silent".

Regardless of whether sfl would be a good thing or not, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE stop saying "you can play selffound already". Or else that means you don't understand the point of hardcore leagues, and you think they should be removed !
