Time Capsule from PoE Closed Beta -- a classic PoE vs D3 thread circa 2012
" Care to elaborate why? “God put me on this earth to accomplish a certain number of things. Right now I'm so far behind that I will never die.”

I name D2 as my favorite game of all time and do very much plan on playing D3, but I have really enjoyed the beta of PoE thus far.
One thing D3 is going to have that I can only hope PoE gains is a real sense of polish. PoE is still in beta and w/o release date so this could come, but the general feel of PoE just does not have the flow and polish of D2 and D3. Everything from the social system, to the skills, to the gear, to the level design - SO FAR - has lacked that fine polished flow that you really need to take a good game and make it great. Here's hoping. |

" PoE is more D2 then D3 is. Thats why people like it so much. Granted D3 has moved on to (Arguably) better things, some disagree. |
|
" Granted, i'll give you that PoE is more like Diablo 2 in some ways then Diablo 3. But people were really thinking Blizzard was just going to remake Diablo 2 in 3D and put a 3 on the box? Blizzard doesn't work that way. “God put me on this earth to accomplish a certain number of things. Right now I'm so far behind that I will never die.”

|
" Didn't they just remake Starcraft in 3D and put a 2 on the box, though? :D What have you become when even nightmares fear you?
|
|
" The fact is that Blizzard did more or less that initially, then radically redesigned and changed many different aspects of the game between then and the release. Diablo 1 and 2 were as famous for the freedoms they had as a game as well as the graphics and popularizing the arpg genre. The fact is, D3 has, less choice then we were led to believe as a whole. In the eyes of people who expected and idolized the blizzard title for the sheer amount of freedom that its diablo series represented, Diablo 3 is more or less a let down. Granted I will still play it BECUASE despite its "failings' it will still be an awesome game. I will also likely play PoE becuase this game is honestly what the devs in blizzard should have incorporated into Diablo 3, granted this is an indie company and blizzard is well, blizzard, I would have been very much interested what would have happened if the GGG crew had made PoE with blizzards money. If is a big word. |

^ EpsiIon It (D3) has more skill choice than ever before, and more than POE does as well. It has way more skills than D2 had as well as runes which make it way way way more than D2 had. Sure, it doesn't tie you down to your choices, but that doesn't mean there's suddenly less choice. Perhaps you had some godly expectations about 'choice' for the game, but I'd say there's still more choice in that game (within classes) than in any other arpg out there. That's a tough call, Tagek. 7 classes, 30 skills each, 210 skills. There's no way Path of Exile has that many active skills.
HOWEVER if you take into account skill modification via support gems (which makes things more multiplicative rather than additive) and the fact that at least some D2 skills are more like passive 'tree' nodes than skill gems, then it's much tougher to calculate. Punch for punch, however, I think D2 had more active skills. Account sharing/boosting is a bannable offence. No ifs, ands, or buts. No exceptions. Not even for billionaires.

Theres no godly expectation at all. PoE is a much "freer" game in general, the fact is, here I can make a marauder that uses a bow, etc, and its not sub-par, but actually in some respects, better then an actual ranger.
You take it forgranted that by choice I mean or even mention skills, I did not specifically mean skills, but rather then entire system as it stands aswell as the items and just how the game is. Fact is this game is a blank slate, where as in Diablo you get pigeon holed into skills that you have, more or less, no choice but to get. The class system in Diablo3 does that, some people just don't like it. I'm not particularly argueing for one side or another, but when people are being a bit thick-headed as to why people prefer PoE to D3, I do occasionally attempt to put my observations into the collective cesspool that is D3 vs PoE. TL;DR: I forgot to put TL;DR: on my last post and someone completely missed the mark by about a half-mile. Last edited by EpsiIon#3923 on Apr 17, 2012, 3:54:19 AM

...And here I was proud of starting this generally productive and interesting discussion. Collective cesspool? Aye, maybe, but I'd like to believe that THIS end is something of a paradox: it is both the shallow end, in that it has less cess in it, and the deep end, for more obvious reasons.
