Time Capsule from PoE Closed Beta -- a classic PoE vs D3 thread circa 2012

I have updated the original post for the last time.
https://linktr.ee/wjameschan -- everything I've ever done worth talking about, and even that is debatable.

Huh. My mace dude is now an actual cultist of Chayula. That's kinda wild.
After playing through Diablo 3 3-4 times with overlapping characters, I was pretty bummed that I didn't ever get that yearning to play a new hero up again. I'm not a big trading guy, and didn't think the AH was a good thing so I didn't use it except sparingly for one character.

I guess it was just never the game for me. The game is a trap of sorts. In order to use a wild combination of a classes skills, a character needs to wield very high end gear. In order to attain that level of gear, a player must participate in the AH flipping business, or buy the gold to buy the gear. To not take that route means to forever use a handful of defensive skills and not experience the other ones. A very strange design.

Previously, I spent endless hours with D1 and especially D2 levelling good and mostly terrible home cooked builds in very much the same way I now do in PoE. The difference I find between D2 and PoE is that I managed to take my goofed builds in D2 much further than I do in PoE. The difficulty of D2 seemed easier to me. The gear to survive wasn't nearly as demanding. The games are quite different from each other and quite alike at the same time :)

Thought I'd toss over some of my thoughts.

Thank you for sharing your journey, captain. :)
That was quite a read, thanks for sharing your experience. Might convince me to try out D3 finally, once I get that console that is :)
I AM MAD
ZAP!ZAP!ZAP! ME SOOO WIZZARD!
D3 on console is fun. D3 on PC sucks. PoE on PC is fun. PoE doesn't exist on console :)
Crafting doesn't exist in POE. Gambling does...and the house always wins.

Velocireptile - I LOL'ed. Which made me fart. I wish the office were empty right now :(

Hardlicker - I had to push the dog out of the way so I could get to the sexy quilt.
Good read. My favorite part was waking up from my nap midway through.
(No really, I almost fell asleep, though that was no fault of your own; actually reading it was the only thing keeping me awake.. Le sigh..)

It's really kind of interesting to look back and read something written about the CB stage of PoE's development. I am definitely happy that I became a supporter, as at this point I already have enough history with the game to be able to put the nostalgia goggles on. What's even more interesting is being able to look back at the person I was then, and the person I am now, and be able to compare changes in my life to periods of PoE's development. Kinda friggen' weird, really!

Still, that's what struck me the most while reading this--that PoE has been around long enough to start doing that. Well, that and that I may have to give D3 and honest go on the 360... There has to be something ironic about that, the 360...

Anyways! Thanks for the read :D

Because Charan,it seems nothing has changed mechanics wise and success/progression in D3 is directly tied to your weapons pure damage for any given skill, including summons/spells.

That's why after getting to inferno in softcore with a few classes I decided to roll as a witchdoctor in hardcore solo self found/crafted,before the patches.

The witchdoctor back then had enough dots and escape skills to at least survive long enough to let damage tick over for a favorable result. It also meant as a foreigner on the US server I wasn't as reliant on latency.

The downturn however was the addition of kill timers on bosses, plus that AIS nerf killed witchdoctor animation times and a stealth nerf to crafting that went by without even a whimper from players (everyone was trading anyway, not crafting),so even as a curse and disperse WD,without the bigass damage weapon taking on inferno bosses champions became all too unlikely to have a favorable outcome.

This screenshot taken after the AIS nerf, when I completely lost interest in playing. The skill choices were deemed mostly useless by peers at the time, yet there she was.... doing it.

My greatest losses in HC were two level 40 to 45 WDs in one night, back up characters for the 60 (a few hours apart) due to Telstra scheduled maintenance.Yes yes I know,I should have checked maintenance schedule after the first disco, but being tired an all, well you know. lol

My main issue with D3 was always that as an ARPG its gameplay mechanics were bad at the core and couldn't be changed even if ActiBlzz wanted to change them.

Sure it was fun for a bit and I enjoyed proving many people wrong (including clannies) that it wasn't possible to do inferno hardcore solo self found/crafted (even as an Ozzie latency biatch) when it released.

You've piqued my interest in installing it again on the PS3 and maybe going further than the first three zombies for a better look. For see and for know. =P

damn, look at this thing..O.o 93k views..

This game was seriously popular at some point :o
Don't forget to drink your milk 👌
Happy to see you gave both games a place instead of pitting them against one another :').

(reads like its a fun brawler for a few spare hours to me)

Peace,

You can call it necroing if you want, but I call it Second Edition publication.

Thanks for the bump, i might have missed this otherwise... very good read and also pretty acurate even today.

While i didn't ever try out D3 myself (noone i knew could throw a free key at me), i've been following it's development and players' opinions from when it came out; basicly i've come to the same conclusion as you and many others, so i continued to play D2 instead of buying D3 until a neioghbour introduced me to PoE which is where i'm planning to stay for a long time :)
Yay for bumps of quality threads.^^
