Time Capsule from PoE Closed Beta -- a classic PoE vs D3 thread circa 2012

" i disagree with this... you have even more choice to be even more unique... in diablo II you couldnt add certain things to your build as you had no access to those abilities... here you can add anything you like... ofc if you write full guides on your build then everyone is going to copy it... say nothing and you might find although they have access to all the skills (they also did on your meleemancer) they might never build the build quite like you did. could be just as much fun making a brand new class name for your toon but never revealing its full build. eg...stealthy mage STEALTHMANCER . full out warrior strength build.... GOLIATH.... from the features explained it seems the devs are wanting to make this a much more pvp centric game than D2 ever was with group pvp. keeping your bui8lds close to your chest could be more important by now we dont need to be told what our class is...we create our own class and its own name... feels like an evolutionary step in the genre.... ive not got the beta yet tho so dont for sure but from what ive read this seems to be how it is.. im also trying to find out if there is some sort of cap....i hope there is. ive never quite liked the system where you can learn everything over time and switch in and out your abilities as you please at anytime and there be no cap at all much prefer you can learn anything but there is a cap on how many skill points / abilities a toon can have. possible to have every skill but only at a low level each...or just 5 skills max level that kind of thing. i also find that the no cap system makes veterans far to strong against new players. the joys of making every last skill point count aswell when rolling a character is my favorite part of any type of rpg. so much so that rolling 3 - 8 toons is so much more interesting than just plugging away with one for eternity that does all and everything Last edited by snelz#5189 on Apr 15, 2012, 8:34:42 PM

" yeah that would work for me an option to either show your title or not ;) a nice happy medium although i would never show mine ;) |

The one thing I also dislike is what many people cite as the main strength of the game: the huge talent tree. Now I really like the whole Materia-esque system they went with for skills but I really wish the talent tree had greater innovation for your class.
For example, I usually see stuff such as, "+10 Dexterity" as completely boring when making your way around the tree. There needs to be greater excitement/unique skills or gems forged by hitting certain places in the tree so it gives incentive. Right now someone may see that they need to level up six times while getting the same skill as the last. Having it all strictly passive is not very engaging to me. The skill point becomes an after thought in a way rather than a way to really enhance a strength of my class for greater performance or having access to a new ability outright. A mix of active and passive would be better suited. Have the passives ramp up to unlocking a class-specific ability and people will want to keep playing and replaying. |

It´s a nice compromise atleast "If" that system i advised about would have been made in the future ^^

" No offence, but you've missed my point with this. There is more *character* customisation, absolutely. I am fairly sure I said as much earlier in the thread, and in many different ways. But what PoE lacks is *class customisation* -- precisely because each class can do the same as each other, give or take restrictions due to passive 'tree' placement. As someone who avidly made strange builds in D2 and similar games, I make this claim fairly confidently. What I also claim is that this is NOT a detriment to PoE at all. It's just the way it rolls. Account sharing/boosting is a bannable offence. No ifs, ands, or buts. No exceptions. Not even for billionaires.

I did get your point...and, no offense taken ofc :-)
For me it all comes down to if there is a cap on skill points / levels / abilities or not. If there isnt your totally right, but if there is a decent cap then we have unlimited 'Class customization' just without class names.... I totally understand what you mean but i see it from a different angle. Also understand that your not saying that poe is any worse off for it. Could you confirm if there is a cap for me? If there is I'm gonna get beta today! |

Glad we're able to discuss this without any sort of throat-ripping, snelz. :)
The hard cap for character level is right now 100, but that's extremely hard to attain. The passive skill calculator on this site allows you to allocate 111 skill points which is *a lot*. Good lord is that a lot. You can do almost anything with any class with that many points. But we have to remember that essentially, right now, we have maybe 70 skill points to play with, given how hard higher levels are to attain. I do not know of any hard cap on the attributes. Skill gems can cap at 20% quality, but I'm not sure about a maximum level. I am, however, sure there'd be one. This actually relates to what we were discussing before with titles based on how you use your character. That's really nothing more than an arbitrary class system, quite similar to Amalur's -- just from the opposite direction. We could, essentially, remove the classes from Path of Exile, retain the starting positions and just allocate classes from there based on the character's progress. In that way, yes, insane class customisation -- or is it? I see a stark difference between class customisation and character customisation, obviously. To me, the former is stretching limited skillsets to their maximum; the latter can only really co-exist with the former but deserve independence IF there are shared class skills, as with PoE. To clarify, I feel that Path of Exile has an incredible amount of character customisation precisely because it has very little class customisation. Games with a great deal of class customisation (let's say, Guild Wars) tend not to have much character customisation because that much class customisation usually requires some form of flexible respeccing. There were MANY types of necromancer you could build in Guild Wars, but since all necromancers could access the same skills, there wasn't much character customisation. Note also that I do see character customistion as permanent by nature. It is tied to leveling up, as in D and D or any other classic RPG. Let's dwell on that for a bit. The thought of 'respeccing' a high level Wizard in D and D is ludicrous, utterly ludicrous. But class customisation is a little more fluid: think of it like that Wizard memorising different spells, equipping different gear. In this way, we could definitely suggest that Path of Exile is about the creation, growth and destiny of that Wizard distinct to other Wizards; certain other games are more concerned with what spells that Wizard can use in different situations. I've always been a specialist -- I see a pyromantic Wizard as one who has mastered fire, not a master wizard who can use fire. I believe in the challenge of mastery, rather than the ease with which a Master can pick up new things at master level. Character customisation creates masters of a particular path, a particular focus. Class customisation used to play this role, but now that there are respecs, skill-swapping, etc...it's more about creating masters who are much more flexible. This works great for gameplay but it rubs the roleplayer in me the wrong way. It lacks...investment and dedication. Commitment to a style. These are, of course, just my terms for it. If I had a little more time and possibly concern, I could likely come up with more concrete definitions. Account sharing/boosting is a bannable offence. No ifs, ands, or buts. No exceptions. Not even for billionaires.

I just played some Diablo 3 and as of right now I dont like it at lest so far.I played Diablo 2 from the time it came out and liked it very much.
I have been playing POE for at lest 6 months and like it so much better than D3 at lest at this point in time. |
