Welp I guess standard league has been up for around 8 months now...
That means approximately 240 days. He would have to make around 12 exalts a day from trading. I think if he dedicated himself to this at the start of open beta it's very possible because there were so many people who didn't know what an exalt orb was. Once he established his base he could use that to leverage deals and turn profits.

3000+ is a bit extreme but certainly possible.

But seriously, what I would do: play the market!
Buy as many chaos/fusings as possible.
Start handing out large amounts of exalts to a LOT of people.
Watch the exchange-rates and have fun.
(possibly buy cheap exalts back *ggg*)
