Loot

The system where drops are seen and can be grabbed by anyone can also put some characters at a disadvantage, if you are a ranged class playing with melee players you don't know, they may be inclined to hoover up any good loot before you even have a chance to get close to it.

Lootsplosions? Have loot fly everywhere, like a piñata. The bigger the mob, the further the AoE lootness.
haha, having played borderlands i am quite accustomed to lootsplosions :).

:D. Now theres an Idea I can get on board with!

Randomly generated loot splosion. It might land within melee distance, or it might fling right to the rangers feet.

That would be great!

And it might fall off the screen, e.g. into a canyon -> and its gone :(

Exactly! and I will have "almost won", making me want to try harder to catch it next time. lol XD

Seriously though, if they did this it could be balanced in many ways. Possibly to NOT fall off cliffs, only landing on areas accessible to players. Also the random generated area of effect could be calculated based on the distance to the furthest player and the nearest player from the monster that dies.

Meaning that 2 players, say a ranger and a melee could kill a monster and it would "most of the time" fall somewhere in the middle of the 2 players.

Aren't there other aspects of the game we're not taking into account here?

If it's FFA and u can PK the crap out of the little thief who goes running with my Giant Sword of Überness, FFA wouldn't be such a bad thing.

If it's FFA and u can't touch the guy who's together in you're party with you...
I wouldn't play a ranged character anymore.

The "lootplosions" would still give people with a lower ping a serious disadvantage. Mages and archers tend to stick together behind the tanks.
Again the other aspects of the game come into play:
- do enemies use a lot of AOE's?
- do enemies retarget?

In general I like the GW system a lot and it doesn't harm the atmosphere of the game IMO.
i can see it now. some ninja looter jumping off a cliff for a unique bow drop when they are a pure tank
If I'm playing a strong, slow tank; the little ninja thief will probably outrun me ;(

I want Boots of Haste!
Lootsplosions would be the best way for FFA, however, I'm still in favor of WYSIWYG loot as the second option.
