POE 2: Class Gender Lock is a Step Backwards
" LOL. Yeah, the things Templars do in this game are not fictional at all. Red Sonja was a warrior priestess. I'd argue that counts as a Templar. Then there's the bo staff wielding Grace Jones from Conan the Destroyer. Pretty monk-like combat. I could see these avatars in their guidance counseler's office. "What do you want to be when you grow up?" "I want to be a mercenary." "Sorry, girls can't use crossbows." |

Anything can technically make sense in a fictional do whatever you want made up world that is not the real world.
But it dsnt mean the devs dont have a specific art vision, where you get to play as one of the specific exiles who survived wraeclast. It dsnt need to cater to ppl "who only like to play as male" or "people who want to identify as something else". It's a slippery slope because there are endless possibilities of what people want to be. What about those who want to play as a goatman-human hybrid instead of a female human warrior? They are JUST AS ENTITLED, as anyone else to get their way. Just learn to accept the devs vision at the end of the day. Last edited by BuDiu#0138 on Dec 1, 2024, 12:52:15 PM

" The bottom line here is of course that GGG don't want to tell the story of a woman wielding a crossbow, which should be totally fine. They do however want to tell the story of a female caster, which is also fine. Every character, at least in PoE 1, has their own background story that doesn't necessarily work for both (all?) genders - which is where the artistic freedom comes into play. If a developer, author, director or whatever wants to tell a story about a man or a woman, let them tell it without having to simplify the story to fit in every gender there are. Sometimes, just sometimes, you should really consider adapting to the world, instead of demanding that the world adapts to you.

" Then why let me rename their character? Or choose how they fight with skill selection and passive choices? The game has choices. Dismissing one as "not part of the game" is disingenuous. Especially in a game with SO MANY choices. When I was younger, I had this one friend who would always fall back on that argument and it drove me nuts. No matter what I suggested as an improvement or change to a game we enjoyed, he would inevitably respond with "They can't add/change that, because it is not in the game." Like, if I said "I wish my character could wear green" he would respond with "That doesn't make sense. your character is not wearing green. |
|
" You name them to separate them from each other and identify each character, as you can have several Witches. You have build choices because it defines HOW you play. Would you seriously play different if the character hidden inside all of that armor had a female voice? It's not disingenuous at all. No one is saying that they "can't". No one is saying it would be bad either, at least not directly. All I am saying, is that they clearly don't want to and that it's possible to respect that, even though you disagree. Sometimes, just sometimes, you should really consider adapting to the world, instead of demanding that the world adapts to you.

I would have liked the option.
But I still want an embedded card game even more *cough* (to be able to chill in a hideout playing cards for a bit, or tournaments, and to have even more reasons to chase div cards to turn, to have a little card challenge with a rare chase NPC as I wait for the fish to bite..). Suppose it all goes on the same list of priorities. To have gender options, what would we not have had? Did you try turning it off and on again?

A story must be able to be about a man or a woman imo, even if it's a main character and not all consumers necessarily identify as that gender. At least there are plenty of playable both men and women in PoE and PoE2. Personally, I would love if the character classes had an official name in the story, given by the developers.

" 12 character classes, perhaps? 12 new character models (or 36, depending if ascendancy classes in PoE 2 have different models), and 12 new sets of voice lines from 12 different male and female actors would probably not only take a long time, but cost a lot too. On top of that, maybe some voice lines from other characters in the game are referring to our character in a gender specific way, so they would have to rewrite those lines and rehire those actors too. But who knows. Sometimes, just sometimes, you should really consider adapting to the world, instead of demanding that the world adapts to you.

noone is stopping you from sending them couple millions and they might do another class for you.

This isn't a game about genders. There is no character creator.
You get to pick one of the characters presented. |
