POE 2: Class Gender Lock is a Step Backwards

Pretty low on my list of priorities for the game, but I do agree. I would like to choose my character's gender.
I'd like to play a Ranger in PoE who isn't a self-righteous, insufferable whinger, but that's what I have to work with. If GGG makes alternate character skins available, it'll be because the resulting revenues will help keep the lights on, not to satisfy anyone's personal quirks. Pretty sure it won't be anytime soon.

The real question is, will the Dance MTXs transfer over to PoE Deuce, and will GGG create more (unlikely, since it appears I'm the only one who ever even uses 'em) for the other classes? =0[.]o=

no customization is 30-50% less fun from game for me.
i mean good customization (not just male/female choise) that allow me to recreate my OC that i transfer from game to game for years.

i'm not saying that existing characters looks bad. they are just not MY characters.

The rest of us are talking about a game feature, and debating if the time/money investment is worth it.

I was so hyped for Path of Exile 2, but the gender-locked classes are a huge disappointment. It feels like such an outdated design choice for an otherwise modern game. I get that they’re going for a specific aesthetic with each class, but why not give players the freedom to choose their gender? It’s 2024 – customization should be a priority in any RPG.

What do you guys think? Does this bother anyone else, or am I overreacting? Would love to hear your thoughts!

I agree actually, but only in that this is a design choice by the developer. One that, imo, limits the game, but it is their choice.

Any variant of RPG, from my early days in the early 80's playing D&D, and all the iterations that have come since, one of THE most important aspects of creating a "living world" in which players will invest their time, their suspension of disbelief, and their interest is - not surprisingly - their character.

Their character should reflect their concept and idea of who they want to be in the game's lore and environment. If it does, they are much more likely to continue to invest time and interest in the game. If it doesn't, they won't.

Being forced to occupy a character concept that is not your own only detracts from the experience - and yes, simple choices like gender, appearance, etc. can "make it your own".

I've seen a lot of internet-typical responses on this subject, from "then don't play", to "we won't miss you", to some things I won't repeat...

That works both ways... if you're playing just to kill things, then "go play an FPS"...

This is an RPG... and while that can sometimes mean inhabiting another "premade" character, in an open concept like PoE, I think it's an unfortunate design choice, perhaps one that will be re-evaluated during EA.

Completely agree. As a brand new gamer to the POE universe/games I was completely put off by the fact that I couldn't make a caster class as a male. What's the point of a role playing game if you can't have discreet control over gender, look, body modifications, etc.. After all, we are "role playing" these characters to some degree. How much investment can I have in a female character that's essentially been pre-built, whom I have absolutely nothing in common with? I audibly chuckled to myself during the "character creation" and said out loud "Are we playing Golden Axe or is this supposed to be a modern ARPG?"

Anyway, I gave up and probably won't be back unless there are drastic changes to the character customization. I also was super annoyed that it took several tries to find a character name as they won't let you choose one that's been chosen before.

For a company who I would "think" is trying to make a great first impression on their brand new game, they most definitely did not on those of us brand new to the universe. Back to D4 I suppose....
It's slightly below how many blades of grass are in my lawn on my list of worries.
out of all the things that can and need desperate work, this is what u ppl want to pressure on

Isn't it because the characters have their own backstory, so the usual "this is your self-insert" doesn't apply so well?

Like, do you get upset when you can't play Samus as a male character in Metroid games, or you can't make Donatello where a white bandana over his eyes in a ninja turtles game?
