POE 2: Class Gender Lock is a Step Backwards

Not being able to pick a gender is the only thing that I really don't like in PoE. I do hope that this feature will be implemented in the future.

I would really love it if it were at least possible to choose the character's gender. It would be amazing to create a female warrior or something like that.

There wouldn't need to be an extremely advanced character customization feature, just the option to choose between female and male.
I think the best compromise is.. GGG sell that option for each character for the ones that feel the need to have it. Simple. IT covers the cost. so no one feels they are losing anything because of it.
i think the biggest "problem" is the voice acting, character writing and the animations and gear assets

its basically a whole new character, so if they ever do it it wont probably be free

question is what people would be willing to pay

pretty weak argument. the people you mentioned are all named.

poe are all exiles.

also it depends on the game genre. mass effect is centred around the main character and even then you get to choose between male and female.

as for all the things you mentioned, lara croft not having a fat option, tracer having a sexual orientation in a certain way, those games are centered around players playing as named characters.

which exile is named? there are none. we name the character. characterization is important for overwatch because each character has a name, a distinct look and personality.

poe? there is SOME personality, there is SOME look but theyre all nameless.

since you mentioned frodo, frodo is written with very distinct features. you can describe his looks and personality. he matters a lot. you cant simply replace frodo.

poe? each and every exile is so replaceable that they get hung if you dont choose them lmao.

heck even in diablo 1/2/3/4 which is much more story oriented than poe, the events of the story play out the same way regardless of which class/character you chose with arguably very little change in between.

Your arguments are even weaker. Every exile has a character, they are just not named. They have their backstories and their individual opinions they speak about throughout the story. Yes they are not as fleshed out as other characters, but they still are.
Overwatch? some of the characters have an origin story told in videos/comics, but outside of that what gives the character a character are ingame dialogue and comments, technically the same as the exiles. So giving a name is your only criteria left?
Look at D4, no character has any story, they are the wanderer from somewhere around and suddenly are the heroes. Outside of different voices i never actually saw any difference in the scripted dialogues between classes. D4 tells a story to a passive listener and the 3 words per scene your character presses out are more for an illusion of you being IN the story.

Also, thinking about, there would be nothing really different if frodo where a girl ;)

its ironic that you can understand how d4 characters have no story yet seem to willingly pushback against gender options for poe characters.

but i think its a waste of time trying to convince you. and you can the say the same about you convincing me.

I was so hyped for Path of Exile 2, but the gender-locked classes are a huge disappointment. It feels like such an outdated design choice for an otherwise modern game. I get that they’re going for a specific aesthetic with each class, but why not give players the freedom to choose their gender? It’s 2024 – customization should be a priority in any RPG.

What do you guys think? Does this bother anyone else, or am I overreacting? Would love to hear your thoughts!

I can see why this is a thing for some players that coming into PoE2. I don't care that much about genderlocked, because this game doesn't emphasize player's freedom in character customization looks. It can be thing in future update, sure, but the game isn't about making your character have anime-size breast and buttock, or having pink hair and pronoun. And by removing genderlock, it will lead to another. Starting from why can't I adjust my character's hair type and colour, skin colour, height, weight, etc. It will only become a burden in development cycle when they already have alot in their hands with league cycle.

Honestly the characters in PoE are very meh when it comes to the story, sure they have some lines but otherwise the story is thrown at them rather than being a part of it, hell in some cases it's worse because the dialog means the character can talk but when it comes to NPC interactions your character is like a silent protagonist, so having both silent and not gives a bit of a mixed feeling to it.

If I make a D&D character and give them a 30 page essay of a backstory it kinda falls flat when I later don't utilise any of that later in the actual game, and this is kinda where we are at in PoE, some one liners don't really make up for that.

Edit: also this isn't a dig at the PoE story, I do like it, just saying the character "lore" is not even worth mentioning, it's a nice little detail you forget quickly.

No it's not. Fuck off with the woke shit.

Seriously tho, it's actually perfectly fine and gives the designers more freedom to work class-specific assets without having to bother with how they look on a different gender.
Playing an "RPG" doesn't mean you HAVE to able to customise everything. Is KCD bad because you can only play a dude and you can't even change his face? I mean, if you answer yes to this... more power to you, i am out.
This forum is wild about this, pretty funny reading some of the responses to people being like "it would be cool if i could choose to have a different character model in a super customizable RPG."

Like you can pick the warrior, put on a staff to throw fireballs, go on the store, buy a $200 dress with wings and rockets, buy a goblin troop to follow you around in town and blow vuvuzelas, and run around not pressing any buttons and automatically exploding magic orbs around you, but playing as a lady is a gigantic step too far XD
