POE 2: Class Gender Lock is a Step Backwards

Personally I think the set genders is a good thing. It really lets the devs dial in the story that these Exiles have taken and will take during our adventure. They had a specific character path in mind from the ground up rather than a dilute generic "this works for both/all genders" for every character archetype. You may relate to your character less personally, but the game and stories as a whole are better off for it.

But that's the thing tho, it doesn't change anything, it's kinda neat that there is some dialog that mentions your class but in the end it does nothing, it has zero, zip, nada, no impact on the story whatsoever, if you muted the dialog you would have no idea anything was different, that is the amount of impact it has.

lets not pretend that "who" the player chooses to play as in a diabloclone is too important.

we're all unnamed exiles who just happen to survive the events of the storyline and eventually thru our struggles we inadvertently become the "heroes".

diablo 3 has the most awesome cinematics of all time with epic battles between angels and demons. but for the character classes progression, at best we got animated still image narrations.

diablo 4 actually has in game cutscenes which are arguably interesting. even then the character class is unimportant.

poe is a diabloclone. if you want more focus on the main hero, perhaps van helsing can deliver a much more superior experience. i actually recommend van helsing if you're into that. the character is named, voiced and has an interesting personality.

It may not change the outcome of the story, but to say it doesn't change anything is a bit disingenuous. There are individualities with the characters that would lose meaning if it was just changed to fit with anything. I can only assume this will be the case in PoE2 as well. Again my opinion, if the story doesn't matter to you I can see why the chosen gender doesn't matter, but for those that like RPGs for the stories told its nice that it is told.
who cares about this stuff
"buff grenades"

- Buff Grenades (Buff-Grenades)

there are a lot of people who dont care for it. and also a lot who do care for it. the fact this topic has been brought up many times and this thread has multiple pages shows that there are at least 2 groups of people who are debating about the issue

not to dismiss you too much. coz your opinion is valid. you want a good story for your character that you're playing. just that different games have different focus points. ideally we want characters to be more fleshed out EVEN when theres different options.

divinity 2 does this exceedingly well as each named character has a distinct look and very unique character driven storylines.

this all happens because in that game the characters are a huge selling point of the game. similarly no ones asking for a female kratos or a fat kratos. we want to play as kratos and see how his story leads him and his struggles. it is his unique story.

you have to admit its a bit disingenuous to pretend the hero individualities of a game like POE means anything. heck, we can summarize every single character story of each character class in poe in a short paragraph.

i do get that there IS value. i do appreciate how peity likes the duelist's ass. i do appreciate that the shadow always has some snarky thing to say when he crits.

but thats all so paper thin. there barely is much value beyond that. have you played titanquest? grimdawn? monster hunter? each of those games have a story. none of them care about the player character. the story moves forward regardless. its the same with poe.

and if we're being super honest about caring about characterization. why are you not asking for POE to have just 1 character base model? POE could be made to be like mass effect where you get either a male or female shepard. we can have tons of voicelines and even get PROPER characterization for our exile.

and to be honest with you, i would actually prefer this over having 6 different character models which has paper thin personality/stories.
