Diablo Immortal is POE killer

I didn't notice it before but in the immortal/shadow menu it tells you how many people on the server are shadows and how many are immortals. The server I'm on is supposed to be one of the more popular ones and as of today there were the ~300 immortals plus ~3,000 shadows.

There's no legitimate reason NOT to be a shadow/immortal unless your clan is still collecting signets or you haven't logged in this week. These player numbers can therefore be used to form a public estimate of how many "engaged" players DI currently has (level 43+, know enough to explore or interact with shadow lottery or ask for a signet or join a clan.) The PoE equivalent would be finishing a 5-act campaign and continuing to play, more or less.

A rough estimate would be that DI currently has 500k-1 million engaged players across all servers. Anyone invested in the "Diablo Immortal has more players than PoE" argument will be able to make their case a few weeks from now with exact data when the number of shadows has crested.

TL;DR - The exact number of people who meaningfully engaged with Diablo Immortal from June 20th onwards is publicly available (if anyone cares enough to aggregate the data.)

(...and I won't lie, I find this delightfully compelling. Eager to see how high I can go to get a single 5* star gem -- so far, highest is $5125US!)

Well, time to go buy a bunch of lottery tickets I guess. Take that, Quin69.

Uuuuh, I rather "play" that, so I don't have to experience the half-arsed gameplay and the nonexistent itemization in Diablo Immortal.

The production values of DI are incredible but then again so is the budget for a new casino.

Also, this sort of thing is nothing new to we gacha veterans. Believe me, it didn't stop us from spending real money trying to get our waifus. Then again, the most I ever spent to get one of those in Fate Grand/Order was probably around $900. Still grotesque but not in the order of several thousand, and definitely within my 'fun' budget provided I don't do it more than, oh, once a year LOL.

At any rate, this sort of simulator is like those stark, vivid warnings about cancer on cigarette packs or casinos outright telling patrons their chances of winning are hopelessly low. As an authority, you need to tell people their chance of losing is 100% to even get close to breaking their addition, but then you miss out on that sweet, sweet revenue from their desperate need to prove extremely high probability wrong.

If that was enough to create quality, I'm sure we would still remember "The Mummy" (2017) as a good movie.

I'm sure the production value, between all reused D3 assets, tilesets and animations, is exquisite. The fact that they've probably spent more of the budget researching and implementing different monetization schemes than actually designing a good game also speaks towards the "production value".

Sorry, I'm throwing fuel on a dead flame here. I'm actually having coffee while watching Josh Strife Hayes talk about the game now. I recommend him, he makes a lot of sense, while being something so rare as a well-spoken, semi-young Brit.

You really are. Did you at least catch lots of fish?

No. She had to work, and my conscience kept me at home too. I can't for the life of me understand why some people would ever take a job 'forcing' them to work weekends. The trout isn't going anywhere.

Oh that sucks.

I dunno what she does, but I can name probably name 50 professions and occupations where needing staff on the weekend is pretty important.

Also, a job's a job right? Not much use going to see the trout if you can't afford the petrol to get there, the rod with which to catch them, or the...well, you get it.

I don't have to work for a living anymore, but I think it prudent to never question why someone else has to, or when, or how. :)

Nah, she's a nurse, not important at all :P

I was of course joking... We all know the world would more or less stop working if people didn't work weekends. I just value weekends very much, as I've had them off my entire working life.

Well fuck I dunno, didn't seem like a joke! I've seen dudes get stroppy over less.

Another weekend then.

But hey, more time to look into just how fucking dire DI is (SURPRISE), so whinge-whinge, I guess.

Look on the bright side: neither of us work for NetEase, because oh boy are they in the shit over this delayed China launch. Heads are gonna roll for sure. 7% drop in share value -- doesn't sound like much, but when you've got people with millions of shares, ooooh nelly is that an ear-popper.
