I for one am thrilled they are adding shape shifting in PoE 2. As a werewolf when I get done with a nightly hunt during a full moon I always wanted to unwind by playing some PoE but never could since playing as a werewolf was not an option before.

Me too. I just pray to God it's a male werewolf.

Not ignorant, or at least not in the usual pejorative sense of the term.

But it's very much a reality that folks who're not in the specific situation often have trouble grasping why it's so important to someone who is in the situation. It simply doesn't matter to them; they're not trying to be actively malicious or intolerant, they just can't figure out why it's important in the first place because to them, it just...isn't. I have a difficult time explaining to a number of folks why this matters to me, and why it's something that gets my attention when looking over a given game.

It's the same reason I was hyper stoked that the first reveal footage of Cyberpunk 2077 featured the female version of V, and I decided against the Collector's Edition of the same game primarily because the CE swag all featured the male version of the character (as well as CE's in general being awful ideas, but eh. Different discussion!). Being able to make that selection, to play in a way that acknowledges my own personal ideals, is important to me because it's not something I can do in every game I play, nor something I can do in my actual life.

Yeah, I've played the male classes in Path. I've played as male characters in tons of games with fixed protagonists, and generally it's not a sticking point if the game is otherwise done well. What I do know, and what I can say to people, is that I enjoy a game more, and am noticeably more likely to buy it, if the protagonist is or can be female. My highest-level Path character is a Ranger, and I don't think I've ever gotten a Marauder beyond 80, in part because running around as this huge, hulking testosterone-addled monster brute just doesn't feel right.

The fact that Grinding Gear is even considering making the option available is super exciting for me. The fact that they're talking about charging me 30+ dollars a character to make it happen is the precise opposite of that -_-
Eh I'm all for MTX to alter character fluff in all sorts of fashions.

There are a few different ways to go about it and some make sense / would be easy to implement and some would be tougher to do "right".

Its already set up as having the character be an individual with its story, so let's start there since that's what we currently have.

1) Minor alterations, same character

Stuff like different hair styles or colors, maybe tattoos or the like. Easy to implement, you don't need different voice lines or story hooks, its the same character story-wise but not as static in appearance. Totally would be for any of this and its the easiest change IMHO.

2) Same character, different mechanics

This would be like using the marauder character looks/voice lines, but starting in a different spot on the tree. I'm for this, although some of the "flavor" of the various Ascendancies is totally based around the backgrounds/cultures of the characters themselves so it wouldn't directly tie in there without some stretching on part of the player. Not a big deal for me personally.

3) Totally different "character" MTX

New look, new voice lines, most expensive to make so you'd have to be sure there was enough interest to buy these character packages. You could create these for specific character replacements (ie- Female but still a marauder) or go with the idea that the starting points aren't directly tied to character like in point 2.

I'm all for as open as possible, backstory interpretation is pretty flexible in my opinion but I can see people not liking that. I just think they can go ahead and play what matches the given story and not force other people to do so, for the most part.
Who cares?

I think it has more to do with PoE, than it has to do with me not able to understand why it's important to people. I can totally see the "importance" of certain gender choices in games like Cyberpunk, where the game is more or less about role-playing and immersion. (I'm fucking stoked for that game. April can't come soon enough).

As I said, I think it has more to do with PoE, as I'm having troubles understanding how anyone can immerse themselves into PoE - at least when it comes to role-playing. For me, the story is too far-fetched to immerse myself in, and the amount of dialogue and the... How to put it... "Psychological distance" between you and the character is just too big.

What about games like... Say... Mutant: Year Zero, where we play as animals? Where does that fit in? Still has role-playing elements and seeks a certain amount of immersion.

I will say while the characters being locked into a gender has never bothered me, I do agree with your sentiment that charging for the option to change gender just seems off to me. They are already changing their character models to be more up to date for poe 2, and said during the con how much easier it is for them to change and manipulate the models, one of the reasons they can now do shape shifting skills. So the cost of making male/female for each class seems like a minor one over all for a company of GGG's stature and budget. Again I'm basing this off of how they talked about the new character models, and how it will make designing MTXs easier going forward, etc. So then really the only "big" cost would be the voice acting. So yea while their obviously is more cost associated with doing both genders for each class I just think it's one of those things if you are going to offer it than just offer it in good faith to your consumers. Offer it for free since it is a sticking point for some, and is becoming a pretty standard practice in the gaming industry. You do it in hopes it will help retain some player base, and maybe entice others to come thus making more money off of your other MTXs.
Seriously. I have been largely immune to game hype for years now, no amount of pre-game hooplah has gotten more than a "huh. That looks neat. Wonder if they can actually deliver" since before Andromeda proved me right. But fuggin' Cyberpunk? 100% Hype Resistance Penetration. I may legit cry if CDPR fucks it up.

ANYWAYS.

Yeah, that's a fair point. Path isn't precisely a deep roleplaying experience, but some people put some roleplaying into it anyways. Even then, I imagine for some folks it's just a brain caltrop. Pointy thing lodged in their skull that itches and snags and grates on them. I don't like the Marauder, I'm not terribly fond of the Duelist. The Shadow is too much of a sassboi for me not to enjoy, and I can get past it, but I understand where folks are coming from when they say that clicking a given silhouette in the starter screen just doesn't excite them.

Played plenty of games where I was playing something weird. Not Year Zero, mostly because the whole Howard the Grizzled Fallout War Duck thing is just too much even for me, but Okami was pretty great. Enjoyed the hell out of Sly Cooper back in the Mascot Platformer era, before those games got fucked up and weird. And I have no issue running Deep Rock Galactic with its cast of drunken fuckup ornery space dorfs with more beard than brains.

Couldn't say why some games get a pass on it and others don't - and again, I was/am reasonably content with Grinding Gear not bothering, because this is in fact Not That Kind Of Game - but I do know even the ones that do get a pass would get more attention from me if they provided the option.

Why? Dunno. But it tru.

EDIT:
@Shishkabob

Pretty much, yeah. Nobody ever didn't play a Duelist or a Witch or whatever because they didn't have a sufficiently Vegas Showgirl MTX costume to put said character in. People have said, in every character genders thread I've ever seen, that they have avoided Witches or Templars or whatever due to not wanting to play the 'wrong' gender, whichever that one might be for them.

Charging people for the chance to fix that, when they're doing this big stonking update and finally admitting that yes, people do in fact want this, in the first place just feels really icky to me. Will I pay it if they do it? Probably, because it is important to me, but I won't really be thrilled about it.

Imagine GGG would have announced the end of gender lock on exilecon. What dou you think would be the reaction of the people there? Like... Cool... Whatever... It's all about supply and demand and GGG knows their demographics well. Could've done it for the merit and some nice pr, but game magazines that are interested in stuff like that don't usually write articles about hardcore arpgs and the majority of the readers of those magazines would not be interested in Poe. So in the end, GGG will probably half-ass this topic by copy-pasting existing character models which can then be applied to different characters, not recording any new dialogue, just keeping the old voice, so the change is purely cosmetic and sell it for 10 bucks a character. Basically giving it the custom league treatment (intern side project).
Why are you caring guys, is just optional, it has 0 impact on gameplay, is just another skin, not like you are going to look at the face of the character while in the middle of a T16 map, come on get over this.
