About gender locked classes

To their brazenly overpriced ga...oh wait, sorry, it's free I forgot. Welcome to F2P games, you don't get to look cool AND play a game that is, 100%, free with free 3 month updates and free content development, did I mention its free? Sorry, in this day and age customizing your character in games that don't charge you to play is the standard model of MTX. GGG has to make money, while their MTXs are pretty expensive, their game is the best F2P game I've played that has no P2W bullshit (you can beat the game without stash tabs, I've done it, if you can't that's your issue) but paid convenience or flashy customization are their bread and butter and an MTX that changes your gender sounds fine. Personally, I'd for 10-15$ for an item you equip and it changes the gender of that character but can be taken back to apply to a different character. It's looks and has no gameplay benefit so, welcome to F2P.

I think people may be overestimating the development costs of new characters. And let's be clear - this would be roughly equivalent to developing a new set of playable characters, since the voice work would be different and they'd (theoretically) have to redo animation rigs for each of the seven. Which sounds like a lot of extra work and bother that nobody wants...

...save they're building seven new playable characters right now as it is, in a manner they have said is vastly easier for them to do.

Wow, have you even heard of logical fallacies?

The animation system for the old models was downright prohibitive to develop new characters for. The new system just makes it feasible.

"Vastly easier" does not mean "easy". When something was previously impossible, "vastly easier" only necessarily means it's possible now.

They have decided that, after over half a decade of decay, it is worth it to overhaul the characters. One new character skeleton + animation system, seven new models, seven sets of animations on the new system, seven new voice actors. That's what they've committed to, because the game really needs it.

It's easier than before. That's still a fuckton of work.

It's really ridiculous how self-entitled you sound, here. This is a free game. Yes, you have to pay money to customize your character's appearance. Yes, of course that includes paying money if what you want is an entirely new set of genderswapped character models with additional animation and voice work. Because those have absolutely nothing to do with the quality of the core game. The character selection means one thing and one thing only for the core game, and that's passive tree and stat starting points. There are 7 of those. So with that you get the 7 characters. Different ones cost extra. Get over yourself.

When you're uncomfortable in your own skin and kinda hate the way other people look at you or talk about you, things like being able to play who and what you want in your free time become a lot more important.

Friendly reminder, this issue is your personal problem, not the worlds, nor GGGs. Your personal feelings of identity crisis are not anyone else's problems but your own and as such, YOU need to deal with them. It's not GGGs responsibility to cater that minority of players. Non gender locked characters are something I wanted for ages cause sometimes I'd rather change up what I am looking at.

Secondly, you clearly have no idea how much effort it'd go into making a new character from the ground up. This isn't pallet swapping colors on an existing model, it is creating a new model from scratch. From the voice, to every cosmetietc having to be fitted for that model, to the animations for every type of cast, attack and interaction, voices as well as a design team to come up with characters that keep the same feel of the class you play, isn't cheap.

Yes, letting people choose gender does make sense in a role playing game.

Male players who dont prefer playing a male charakter are weirdos imo.

I usually like juggernaught looking armor and most games, the males get it and the females don't cause we gotta show off their....assets. Always disappointing to me with gender locked chars. PoE thankfully doesn't go the superslut route of armor but, I despise the witches voice lines and voice, it just grates so I'd love not having to mute the voices just to play her tolerably....or the scion.....talks SO much
To be honest most of this thread is ridiculous. I mostly hate myself for actually reading it all. Here is a much simpler summary, and is devoid of hyperbolic reteritc.

1. Path of Exile is free to play, and requires mtx to continue functioning.

2. Mtx, for the most part, is driven by customer request and expectations. Gender options have been requested for years. We should be praising GGG, that after all this time, they are finally able to provide this.

3. This is not a cheap endeavor. There are animations, character models with every armor piece, voice acting, and presumably some lore to be added. (At least at character selection)

4. Its optional. Dont be bringing your personal issues to the game. No one is making anyone do anything.

5. PoE was never about immersion and roleplaying. There are better options out there if this your thing. I mean what's next? "The female duelist has too short of hair and I cant get into it?" Fucking please.

6. Inb4 "my shapeshifter cat looks too feminine." "My werewolf looks like a dude" "shouldn't my witch werebear have bewbs?" I just cant. Really this generation and identity politics is too much.

Right.

Y'know, for a while there it was nice to be having an actual discussion on this subject, without a lot of shaming and handwaving and politics. Clearly that time has passed though, and now it's all about Entitled Identity Politics and people appending absurd requirements onto the request because they don't like the idea that this is important to some folks.

So...sure. Y'all have your fun at my expense. Heh, I'm used to it by now, and frankly I'm perfectly prepared for Grinding Gear to do exactly what they've done since the game went live and not bother with alternate genders at all. I'll continue to favor the female classes and end up real well acquainted with the north-northeast region of the tree, and do me.

Though I will point out - I never insisted that Grinding Gear should add this feature, nor that it should be shoved in the face of anyone who doesn't like it. Saying "it's free to play, that means you should be perfectly okay with spending 70+ dollars on some fancy new MTX every month so stop being a whiny bitch!" is not an argument, it's idiocy. At that point the game is not even slightly 'free to play', and claiming it is shows a deep misunderstanding of the modern gaming market. And yelling at me over identity politics is disingenuous when I wasn't the one that brought it up.

So yeah. Sorry to've disturbed your days, and by all means enjoy the game. But try not to assault someone quite so violently over simply expressing a desire for a design decision of this type to not be gated behind a vomit-inducingly high price point.
^ that is totally not what happened and you know it.

Gaslighting and playing a victim, certainly highlights the absurdity surrounding optional cosmetics or superficial additions to the game.

Nice bait, but we dont have to suffer through your passive aggressive condemnation of gender mtx due to your world view. GGG offering gender options, and asking for development cost reimbursement, or *gasp, minor profits, should not be a source of ridicule.

Sorry that's not how it works. Enjoy your day.

While you're trying to "disguise" this as a "small deal", it does shine through that it's pretty important to you, as you'll keep "favoring the north/north-east side of the tree" (might just be my interpretation, arrest me here if I'm wrong). Not shaming you here, each to their own and all that. I get the request/wish, and I see nothing wrong with them adding it. What I don't get, is the resist of buying such an option. Both you and me, an many others have spent a lot on this game, and bought several things we never had a real passion about. Now you might have a chance of supporting GGG with a purchase you actually CARE about, and that will enrich your game A LOT, as you'll get access to the whole passive tree.

As I see it, gender options is (indirectly) the largest expansion pack you could ever get. Is it the principle? "This SHOULD be in the game, hence I won't pay for it"? Fair enough, I guess. But you have to agree - on some level - that this is kind of an obvious chance for GGG to make a valuable, non-P2W MTX?
Sometimes, just sometimes, you should really consider adapting to the world, instead of demanding that the world adapts to you.
