Time Capsule from PoE Closed Beta -- a classic PoE vs D3 thread circa 2012

The moment I saw a screenshot of PoE, I knew I would fall in love with it.
I only gained beta access recently, in the free weekend (I managed to get a key by saying loudly how much I would love playing this beyond the stress test weekend and someone was kind enough to grant me my wish).

I must say I loved every moment of PoE, but what really made me totally fall in love was the moment I saw the skill tree.
I was there, mesmerised by the possibilities.

I, like OP, enjoy making the cross-class characters who aren't very viable end game, but they are silly ideas that are fun to play.

A claws witch? no problem.
A full evasion ranger with a shield and a sword? Totally my thing
An old Paladin from the Fiery lands called Vagraan with avat of fire and a claymore? count me in!

I just love the possibilities of PoE. I only play on HC league and, the moment my character dies, I instantly delete him and start a new silly combination.

The only wish I still have is to be a diamond supporter, because if there is one studio who deserves it, it's GGG.
Sadely I can't even support with 10$, but you guys have my heart.

With love.

You're right, ArchieM's comments about game immersion and atmosphere (if that is the post to which you refer) are profound and concerning for someone for whom atmosphere is of utmost concern. I'm looking forward to evaluating it for myself. In any case, I hope his comments are taken seriously by the developers.

There is dev presence in that thread, yes. I still take issue with some of his solutions but he's bang-on right that the acts need some sort of...oomph to really drive most players onward.

And he's also right that I'm the sort of guy who can get a lot from a little. One of my better attributes, I feel; probably stems from an adolescence spent balancing building robots with limited amounts of lego and devouring books with more outdoorsy pastimes. :)
Account sharing/boosting is a bannable offence. No ifs, ands, or buts. No exceptions. Not even for billionaires.

Great read. I've just recently played the D3 beta, and once I saw how :simple: the skill tree and rune system was, I felt dissapointed.

If they just added a large ammount of runes and made them similar to PoE it would be great. The animations are superb and I don't even mind the stylized bit (apart from armor tier looks, each item should look a good bit different)

I bought a PoE key the instant they were in the store. And even with 2 acts the game seems so customizable, you can make the exact character you want.

I'm just waiting for the cuthroat league :D

ps. buff dual-weild.

Hi, and welcome!

...You really feel dual-wield needs some buffing? Hm. I won't disagree, I haven't explored it that far. What precisely needs a buff though? Just the damage, or the variety? I'll admit that Dual Strike is a bit of a let-down: one animation, and it's exactly the same with any two weapons...

Similar thoughts expressed by the OP ... +1 agree with everything you say, I haven't had the opportunity to test D3 yet and I will admit I have pre-ordered it and will play it but for me and a few close friends we will be here with PoE as it does best represent the mad times I had with D1 over a what 36k modem direct tcp/ip connect? LOL

I love PoE and hope the future is grand <3

For me, double strike / dual strike need buffs. They do practically the same amount of damage that cleave does, while cleave hits all the enemies at once.

That's fair enough, yeah. Cleave hits with both weapons too, just with a penalty to damage.

Maybe just make it a sort of 'zeal' that gains extra hits per gem level?

EXACTLY!!!!! :P

Yeah, zeal gets copied a lot from diablo, but frankly, the concept of the skill is just ridiculously fun and this game should have it's own version of it too.

Well, the idea can be traced further back than that -- think of the Renzokugiri materia from FFVII. I'm not sure as to the Western name, Quadra-cut or something like that. Basic modifier than changed one attack into two, and then four.
