I'm not a big fan of auction houses. What I would prefer is a marketplace where the seller lists everything with a set price.
A commission can be charged to either the buyer or seller ala CoH or EQ. Under no circumstances should RMT be an option. Any fool can criticize, condemn and complain and most fools do. Benjamin Franklin Last edited by Artanthos#0192 on Apr 13, 2017, 1:05:38 PM

Personally D3 sort of died for me when any possiblity of trading was taken away. The rest of the game was improved, but one of the core reasons to keep playing longtime was removed.
Now, RMT (Real Money Transactions, btw for those not aware of this) were a horrible idea, and should never be part of this. However, I think PoE could benefit massively from an AH. I literally cannot think of any kind of drawback except for the development effort involved. Pros: - reliable method of offline trading - better safeguard against scamming - convenient, readily accessible way of trading ingame without tabbing or using external apps - additional monetization options for GGG through cash shop options for more listings, longer listings, etc (I would pay for those immediately) - faster, more easily trackable economy pace and development - immediate improvement of "ding! that dropped!" feeling through more accessible trading Cons: - ??? maybe you just love direct trading and scamming? Otherwise I can't think of anything that would be of detriment to the game. Speaking for myself one of the main reasons I don't play MORE PoE is simply the lack of several quality of life features such as an ingame auction house or marketplace. I get heavily invested into the game for a few weeks and then get frustrated and annoyed with the lack of readily available options to trade and hunt for the items I want for the builds I theorycrafted and discussed. Not everything that calls back to "the good ol' days" of D2 is actually that great. Using a website and having to hope for sellers to actually be online and still have the item in question is a frustrating hassle that frequently takes me out of the game. Once more, I think people that are viciously against an AH are either heavily invested into the current meta of trading, which they enjoy (and fair enough, there's something for everyone), or they think of RMT and D3, and that is definitely not what anyone wants. Personally I would absolutely adore any kind of ingame AH option and it would probably make me never drop the game again. |

ARPGs are a particular kind of environment.
They are a (fairly static) progression curve, intended to offer a fairly consistent challenge at any particular point along that curve. In addition, they provide rewards: Levels, passive node points, loot, etc. The rewards are intentionally incremental. They allow the player to move further along the progression curve, thus facing greater challenge, and obtaining greater reward. The speed of the rewards must be managed in order to support the viability of the progression curve. The goal is to provide the player with a sense of accomplishment for overcoming the hurdles the progression curve represents. The key issue is what's referred to as Sourcing. How will rewards be sourced? The developers MUST control the speed at which those rewards are sourced. If you don't control the sourcing speed, you don't have a game. While this is frequently true in games, it is especially true in ARPG environments. The degree to which you allow trading, the degree to which you facilitate a player driven trading system directly impacts sourcing. Any trading system will make sourcing easier. If (when) sourcing via trading becomes easier than sourcing via playing the game, then you have successfully defeated the purpose of an ARPG. This was the trap D3 fell into. The RMT portion of that certain exacerbated the issue, but even without the RMT, the AH system had the end result of defeating the primary purpose of the game: The Hunt for Loot. I'm not in favor of an AH system in this type of game (an ARPG). 'A Balrog,' muttered Gandalf. 'Now I understand.' He faltered and leaned heavily on his staff. 'What an evil fortune! And I am already weary.'

" D3 failed because of many factors; game design is absolutely one of those factors, the AH is another. GGG understands it - and have said it several time; trade can not be too easy. And some may say it's already too easy - and I might even agree, but we all know it can EASILY be made much easier if they decide to throw in a standard AH. The easier trade is, the more mandatory it gets. Some may say it's already mandatory, but I beg to differ. It's mandatory if you want to beat the hardest content in a week or two, maybe. And if that's the reason why people are demanding an AH, we are indeed crossing over into the "instant gratification"-debate, and let's not go there. I think the only reason why a lot of people (no, not all) are crying out for an AH, are two simple reasons; "I want to sell my items faster/easier" and "I want to get my items faster/easier", while they neglect everything else that would happen to the game if they get their will. And there WILL be huge changes to the game, both indirectly and directly, if we get some sort of "one click buy offline"-option, like most auction houses have. Sometimes, just sometimes, you should really consider adapting to the world, instead of demanding that the world adapts to you.

" NO, the reason people want an ingame AH, is because we are sick of the current out of game trading, price fixing by falsely listing items at lowball prices, and to remove afk or too busy playing the game to trade instances. People should not be forced to STOP playing the game just to make a trade, yet alone have to join a party and be in the same zone. Another main reason NOW is to stop Bots from flipping, though if they do it, they will need to setup a system to make sure they can stop any type of bot market activity. IGN:Axe_Crazy

" I'm sorry, didn't know you were speaking for everyone. I bend over for you, I am CLEARLY wrong as can be. Sorry. Sometimes, just sometimes, you should really consider adapting to the world, instead of demanding that the world adapts to you.

" Oh, am i supposed to feel sorry for you because you do not talk to people in game, or listen to their issues and frustrations, which many times just lead them to quitting? Nope i do not think so. IGN:Axe_Crazy

" I talk a lot to people, but I do not tend to speak for EVERYONE, as you do. A LOT of complaints goes towards NOT BEING ABLE TO BUY WHEN THEY WANT TO BUY. And only that. Sometimes, just sometimes, you should really consider adapting to the world, instead of demanding that the world adapts to you.
