Is this what an action RPG should look like?

And these people are exactly the ones my post was not talking about.

It is similar to telling what GGG should do... You don't just complain and not tell them what you expect from them. You have the angry mobs and you have the demanding mobs.

The "this is not what an ARPG should be" argument is just the good old No True Scotsman fallacy.
No it isn't, because the distance between a No True Scotsman fallacy and a non-fallacy is the word "should." This converts a rejection of the specific vis-a-vis the general as a statement of fact, into the rejection of the specific as a statement of opinion. "No true Scotsman would ever commit such a crime" is fallacy; "no true Scotsman should ever commit such a crime," isn't. "Mature democracies do not start wars" is fallacy; "mature democracies should not start wars," isn't. Of course, just because they're no longer fallacies doesn't mean you can't disagree with them - you can - but then you contrasting your "shoulds" and "shouldn'ts" with others, opinions versus opinions.

Now, if I had said "this video isn't even an ARPG," then I'd be in No True Scotsman territory. But I didn't. I recognize that the concept of the ARPG is not as sterling and unblemished as I might hope, and that the gameplay I disapprove of happens. That thoughtless facetank spam style is what some people think ARPGs are (and they're partially correct) and should be (it emphatically shouldn't).

I imagine it would be fair criticism to point out that I'm inviting the fallacy with my titular question. So point taken there. But Simpsons Kanji already said it.

There. New title.

No, this isn't a Labyrinth QQ thread. Far from it.

Check out this video.
ZiggyD showing off Zerphi's Last Breath

"I like that you actually have to think about using this as well," quoth the Ziggy. But obviously he didn't have to think about where he's standing, or even which direction he's aiming. Seriously, check out the moment where Dominus is right it front of him and he completely misses with Spark.

This is what some of you people think this game is. What ARPGs are. Stand anywhere, spam skill, facetank all the things, bodies hit the floor around you. The items which let you achieve this are the good items; the skills which let you achieve this are the good skills.

This mentality is a cancer upon action role-playing games.

Why is there so much Labyrinth QQ? This is why: Positioning matters, and no amount of spam will ever kill a trap. The path is not linear but requires navigation. The boss requires you to actually pay attention and do specific things during the fight, or he comes back stronger.

The Labyrinth is the most anti-spam, anti-facetank, pro-positioning, pro-thinking content GGG has ever released. So Spam Nation despises it.

Good.

I hope you all you one-handed Netflix-watching beverage holders never get your Ascendancy points. And to those who play PoE with both hands primed and full attention, I salute you; your enchantments are well earned.

Good day, sirs.

Good post and agreed. Right direction for game for sure.

Have you read the post? It's not something you can guess from the title.

Since this thread got bumped and I feel like I was a little mean to Ziggy in the OP, here's what an action RPG actually should look like.

Really? What does that have to do with player skill? The izaro fight is a pure gear barrier, nothing more. You either have enough health to not get oneshot or you dont. Even the Aziri fight has more player skill involved. Heck, the act two boss has more player skill involved.

He's moving around from unsafe ground to slightly-safer ground ask throughout that fight. Positioning is highly relevant.

When he messes up he goes from near-full to scary-low. Admittedly, there probably is some gear-check there, but still: when he messes up he goes from near-full to scary-low. That's good gameplay.
