PoE's performance is poor for a lot of people

The game is inconsistent like hell. When I started playing, I could run it on high. The more levels I got into my char, the game ran more poorly with each one. Now I'm lvl 60, and I can't run this game if I want to have fun anymore - every strongbox is just a 5 second lag, if it's a :FREEZES YOU: strongbox I'm usually dead, so even the idea of playing HC is just stupid at the moment. My build is very good and I'm itemised well, but I die so often because of fps spikes there's no point playing anymore. And yeah, I too can run much better looking games with lots and lots of content + mods and not spike once. Probably not playing PoE before they fix it.
Returned to PoE after a few years (last time I've played the game was still in closed beta). This time trying out HC because SC just seemed boring to me. One character died to an essence drain talisman at 72, no problem, lesson learned. Then this character died to a strongbox freeze (you know, the asset loading kind, not a game effect). I knew that it's risky, prepared with a granite flask, vaal skeletons etc. Nope.

I don't have a SSD. I don't think a SSD should be required to play HC. I guess I'll just ignore boxes from now on.

So, yeah, the engine really needs an optimization pass.

Nice post OP.

Feel kinda stupid that I didnt read this before I started to whine about Auras dissapearing while using Blade Vortex, Disconnects while using flicker strike, and disccnnects / frame drops the more mobs and effects on your screen.

Something have gone very wrong since 2.0 got released. Wont cross my fingers since GGG doesnt reply on the matter though. Maybe they care who knows.
I agree, we need better performance. But there is a light at the end of the tunnel, because GGG also agrees (see http://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/1575921):

Performance
We will soon have two full-time programmers working on client and server performance. One is a dedicated graphics engine programmer. In addition, we have engaged an external company to help with some improvements to our graphics engine.

@GGG: It would be great if we could get updates on this topic every now and then.

I've addressed this in the OP, I believe; there's no way they can publicly acknowledge this thread because it would be PR suicide with overpromising.

That said, here's hoping the two performance programmers can work their magic. The patch note that said "fixed an issue with the game freezing when looking at gems" LITERALLY did the opposite for me; it introduced that issue.

Just wanted to chime in and report my performance issues.

First of all: It used to be tolerable before 2.0, but its really not any more.

I'm running a Fury X (Can run witcher3 maxed out at 90fps stable at 1440p), 5820k i7 (6core) cpu with 32gb ram and an intel pcie SSD (1GB/s read speed).

Now with POE... I have found I can still play it, if I dont do indoor maps and play solo only, but everything else (2man parties, indoor maps like Crypt) consistently run at 30fps or below (i.e. unplayable), mostly its below 15 even.

This sucks because it means that I literally cannot participate in party play and am forced to play solo to be able to play at all. I am seriously considering buying a low-end nvidia gpu like a 750TI or something to install alongside my FuryX and just run POE on the 750ti...

Ok onto more details...

- Indoor maps like crypt are bad, adding chilled/burnning ground makes it worse. Using spells/projectiles that have a lighting effect (i.e. slightly brighten up the ground where the projectile is traveling) makes it worse. Bad in this case means a maximum of 20-30fps with frequent 5-20s drops to 1-10fps. This is independant of mobs and seems to be solely caused by lighting conditions.

- Outdoor maps are generally fine, but Channel (as well as the aqueduct) have areas of constant ~10fps.

- Perandus boxes do *not* affect my fps in a notable way.

While I'm doing the master dailies with a friend of mine (nvidia user) I ask him about his fps. Most of the times when Im dropping below 20 he remains at constant 60.

This makes it so I cant stand doing more than just the dailies with him because the constant <30fps make it insufferable. Obviously neither of us is doing any kind of CoC build. In fact... I tried a mjölner build in 2.0 and you obviously get the occasional stutters while Discharge goes off but I found the build to not have a further notable impact on the already very awful performance.

Well, with these new Perandus Chests I have HUGE fps drops to 0-5 when the guardians spawn... it's terrible to play right now because when I attempt them I die in 1-2 seconds because the game is getting freezed like hell... Can't even play properly right now.
