I felt that I owed it to this fine man for sharing his amazing insight to the EK/EB build he put together. I died shortly after reading through this thread on my wander, so I decided to give this build a go. I luckily caught his revision on page 15 before I was too deep, otherwise I may have found myself at the same fate as Byrr.

I haven't had time to go through and see if anyone has given a more in depth, step by step process, so here's what I did.

Here is where I was with my spec around level 30ish, about the time I finished normal up. My gear was a little lacking, so I supplemented my HP the best I could by picking up as many nodes asap


From here, I evened out my hp and pushed up to EB, waiting till I felt comfortable making the full swap to EK which happened around level 52 for me. I used freezing pulse with LMP + added lightning up to this point. Here is where I currently sit. I lack spell casting speed on my equipment, so I'm picking up the casting nodes, then will work on my damage a bit as I feel my hp currently (pushing close to 2500 atm in a1 merciless) is stable enough for a while. I feel very comfortable with where I am in the tree and the availability of different passives to chose should I feel that I am falling behind in armor/damage/cast speed/whatever. Here's my spec at level 53:


The 10 dex node under acceleration is there because I'm short 2 dex in my current gearset, easy enough to respec it later. From here I'm thinking finish picking up the casting speeds nodes, followed by the spell damage and projectile nodes both in the center under conduit (spell damage) and the projectile nodes at shadow start. After that, it's all tank stats across to iron reflexes and up to thick skin in the ranger area.

I hope this helps give a sense of direction for some of you who are wanting to try out this spec. I highly suggest you give it a go, it's incredibly powerful, even before you make your swap to EB/EK,

I guess I'm cheating as a templar, but here's my take on the build. Very defensive and will take some respecing along the way to get to. Hits a lot of elemental resistance along the way so you can focus on cast speed/spell dmg/chaos resist/hp when you gear. I've got a level 59 hc templar running this build with good success.

I have 15,5k Armor and 3,6k dps 4,1k HP. Thanks Byrr for this build and I'm gonna take this to the ladder top 10! :P

^ Also 79 shadow here, after I took iron reflexes everything became 10x easier. I can solo merciless Vaal very easy and Piety is also doable. Life leech @ EK is a must to keep you full hp all the time.

Using 5 link chest: EK, faster cast, iron will, faster projectiles, life leech. 6th socked would be added fire damage, then the dps will skyrocket

i would probably switch to this shield after i upgraded my wand looking back. Probably would have saved me from getting 1 shot like i did with the reduced damage and extra 5k or so armor.

Id adjust the build to have more armor by going Iron Reflexes now if i did it again, or I would look at a different way to deliver EK(totem, remote mine, trap, etc). EK on its own is a unique physical damage type in that it scales from the gem level like a spell but you cant get 75% resistance to the damage type your doing like you would every other spell. This makes reflect mobs basically suicide later on, even in a 20% map.

If I did this build again(which I have an itching to do, I hate to leave off knowing I can do better), I would probably try the very very high armor route and hope that would mitigate reflected damage a bit better.

The idea of blood magicing the auras was wrong, its better to use 1 higher end piece of ES gear to get the extra mana then with the regen from your high mana pool and clarity you can run all 5 auras and cast EKs. Preferably these would be boots or gloves.

Could you specify how you would 5-link a spell totem'ed EK? Also, would you be 4 linking an EK along with the 5-link spell totem'ed EK?

spell totem wouldnt work well for EK, the totems would just end up 1 shotting themselves. Youll want to remote mine the EKs, and since mines dont leech just drop the life leech for the support slot.
