Somewhat, but here's the next thing I don't understand, but am seeing this referenced evey where here;
Who are we competing against? This is a PvE game. There is no competition here.
This one has me really confused and it's not just this thread. It's everywhere here. Like, what do I care if some guy has epic sword +99. He can't touch me with it, and I am wasting monsters no problem with junk I've found on the floor.
Who are we competing against? I see this everywhere, I was going to make a thread about it.
Your understanding of what can be seen as competition is narrow. As long as you can measure it, people will compete over it. It's ridiculous to think that we're only competing in games if it's labelled as PVP.
Everytime I start playing these loot-centric games, I fantasize about getting an unimaginably good drop that no one else who's playing has ever gotten etc. I seriously enjoy the thought. I also enjoy being able to do things others say they/I can't do. For example, when people complain about the difficulty of Dominus, that makes the thought of beating Dominus all the more enjoyable for me, which is a kind of competition you don't need PVP or even multiplayer to accomplish.
See, I kinda understand this, but here's where it falls apart;
You will never have an item that someone else won't have.
We are all unique snowflakes, just like everyone else...
I beat dominus on merciless wearing mostly white items, because they had the sockets linked how I needed. What does that say? It's the honest truth. Did it as a summoner, and the only yellow item I had was a shield, boots were blue, rest white. Pure summoner.
What kind of competition is this?
I understand the wanting to compete, but I'm having a really hard time seeing where the actual competition is.
See, the analogy is flawed; in competitive endeavors, everyone is put at a level playing field in order to actually compete. Professional sports; performance enhancing drugs are disallowed, etc. They don't have races where one guy is in a supercar and the rest are in K-cars.
This reads to me simply as greed and the desire for envy.
If I would propose a competition, for PvE, it would be something like, beat Dominus, in hardcore, wearing only white items without using any orbs.
Someone having a graphite hockey stick to shoot 100mph shots over my wooden capped around 60mph is not a competition. I'm sorry.
(Short) races are actual competitions. The rest... not so much. Not really.

I agree with the OP
hear is another good eg.
I am level 85 ATM
i have traded AND crafted gear on my character, my build is created by me and thare are very VERY few like it on the server. Becuse of this the gear i need is some what diffrent than the gear that most others want, with 1 exception. I need a very high DPS 2 hannded weapon, prefecbly all phisical with med - high attack speed.
I crafted a 500 DPS axe i found into a 6 sockt 5 link item.
Upgrading this axe is basicaly imposible for me. Y is this ?
well the demand for high damage axes has skyrocketed since the launch , my characters last ladder could litlerly not give away good 2 handers however evrey 1 wants them now so the only axe avalible to buy , with use of trade chat , fourms , poe exploer , WTB threads and evreything is a 10 - 15 exsulted item.
This curency i simply do not have, and most likley will not have durring this ladder. HOWEVER it is posible for me to do this if i dedicate myself to saving up and buying this 1 550-600 5-6 link item. I chose not to and spend my curency on other gear for my character and gear for my test characters.
With a 100 % streamlined system buying something like this for a normal player would be 50 - 100 exsulted EASY meaning a player such as myself has no way to get 1 , i like the fact that high level upgrades are hard to get, both with buying AND crafting.
Will i own a volts this ladder , probley not but im up to level 75 maps now so who knows mabey 1 drops . it's the fact that i still have something to do at level 85 that is great, and not only do i have things to do but i have diffrent things to do. Should i grind curency for saving up for a upgrade ? should i farm high level maps hoping for a god like item drop, should i farm my map pool incresing it's high map sisze ? should i trade my curencys to something diffrent to fight the market ?
All of these options are only hear since the economy and trade system is the way it is now. Without it i would be curesed to always be doomed to the state the out of control drop rates / economy would be. As it is now thare are many options to deal with the economy in this game ALL viable wheter it be trading, crafting , or forgeting the system and playing solo ( something i do with all my characters to around level 80 FYI )
Just a sec let me grab a beer...@#*@ Ok how did I die this time
Learn the rules, it's the only way to exploit them.

you tradebads need really good items to progress , you cant do it without it so it must be impossible.

The economy became terminal, maxed in a month. Untouchably nice items in any form (i.e., merely having a GFG leg) became commonplace. Players got bored...fast. The no lifers were finding dozens of BIS bae leg types a day- top items lost all their distinction.
The irony of this post...
The people shouting for looser RnG are those that trade generally... not those that play SF lol.
I play solo self-found (although I haven't ever passed judgement on the SFL-threads that pop up) and am constantly telling people that trade, who whinge about the economy etc, that trading isnt necessary and self-found is fine. Your first paragraph has so missed the spot.

seeling things to the needy and not buying from what you get are two different things.

You Drop and delete the currency ?
Why not just give it away for free ?

I played self found for hundreds of hours, got 3 characters to above level 80, then I started trading. I increased my "wealth" ten fold in under two weeks just from trading. I could finally get all those uniques, high DPS weapons and 6 links that cost exalts and never drops for me. The problem now is that I have a decked out character that took almost no effort, that feels lame. And playing the game started to feel like a waste of time since I could just play the trade chat instead. I can't even bother to start the game anymore.
So it's trading that makes the game stale and easy.

tl;dr; of OP post: fixing bad loot and crafting with trading is good; trading takes skill, playing the game doesn't.
