I ask this as someone who's pretty new here, and has traded about twice.
Why would you want it disabled?
I been playing pretty non-stop, I just turn trade off every time I join the game. It has absolutely zero bearing on my game really.
I just don't understand, sorry.
A fair question! Speaking only for me, I would rather play in a league where everyone finds their own gear for a more competitive spirit and a focus on playing the game rather than trading. Like I say, I can play self found without it, just like I could play softcore and delete my characters to simulate hardcore. I would much rather party up with other players just for fun and to play rather than everything having such an obsessed focus on trade. Hope that makes sense.
Somewhat, but here's the next thing I don't understand, but am seeing this referenced evey where here;
Who are we competing against? This is a PvE game. There is no competition here.
This one has me really confused and it's not just this thread. It's everywhere here. Like, what do I care if some guy has epic sword +99. He can't touch me with it, and I am wasting monsters no problem with junk I've found on the floor.
Who are we competing against? I see this everywhere, I was going to make a thread about it.

For a PvE game, the only thing you have to worry about is that the game isn't balanced around the idea that you'll have epic sword +99, or at the very least epic sword +96 (vendor trash), if these are only practically obtainable via trade.
This is not an assertion that the above is true in PoE, or to the contrary.
It is also not relevant to that post. Not really. :D

Everyone appears to be competing to have the best loot. Might not make a ton of logical sense but spending hundreds or thousands of hours in a game like this grinding the same content isn't really supposed to make much sense.

Ladders and Races mainly. A sort of friendly style of competition where you are judged on how well you can handle and compensate for what the RNG gods give you rather than RMT or trading for BiS. Not srs biz or try hard, but for fun.

Yeah like I don't get it.
I started about 3 weeks ago now, am now 76 with one char, and the only deaths I've had were to Dominus on Merciless (this boss is terrible cheese, final form).
I've found a total of 2-3 unique items, and bought 2. Did not need the ones I bought to progress.
I've run all the 66 maps now, and beat all them too. Sure, I gotta kite a bit, and my gear could be a lot better, but that's why I keep playing; to get that better gear.
The witch has like 1200 hp and 2k shields, pure summoner. 30 deaths to Dom on Merc (I eventually resorted to zerging him on the final phase is why so high) and the rest has been cake.
I got a 50 Marauder too, everything the same, no trading, etc, have beaten everything he's come up against thus far with relative ease, and no trade.
The only thing you DO absolutely NEED are the skill gems, and all the ones I needed were given as quest rewards.
I am just at a loss on the competitiveness and anti-trade, though I don't do either myself as well.
It's all a 'want' debate, not a 'need'.
Sure, there's probably 200 items I want, but I don't actually need them to do anything in this game.
I'm sure someone could make some vids of going through the entire game in white un-modified gear no problem. We used to do it in other games.
Like is there even time to trade in the races? The broadcasts I've seen are like 1 hour races. Idk

I certainly do not claim you "need" BiS gear in this game... otherwise, I'd have left long ago lol. That's not really the point. A SFL ladder, if possible to implement, giving all players an equal footing is the sort of thing that interests me. Why should I care who is top of current league ladders, considering they could just buy or trade for the gear to do it? Not that it is a hugely mega important thing, it is something that would make the game fun for me. I realize this is entirely subjective, but still being honest. Just because I don't want to cheat and trade or buy gear doesn't mean I don't want a sense of competition (I'd just rather do it without external factors). :)
From a different angle- imagine they created the long-awaited cutthroat lague. Do you think it would be more fun and fair if people could trade/buy power? or if everyone had to farm for that power? Personally, it would be much more interesting if everyone was on a level playing field and external factors were eliminated (if even possible). Otherwise, what's the point really?

Here is my top list of what is GOOD about trading and the economy. I am tired of all these SFL troll threads and economy hates posts. The simple truth is there are some very sophisticated factors most of these posters overlook.
1. The RNG needs to be tight. Period. People complain about self found and demand an ultra loose RNG. The issue is lifespan. The looser the RNG, the faster the game melts down, becomes stale/easy, and fails. Using D3 as an example, remember when they buffed legendary drops combined with difficulty nerfs? The economy became terminal, maxed in a month. Untouchably nice items in any form (i.e., merely having a GFG leg) became commonplace. Players got bored...fast. The no lifers were finding dozens of BIS bae leg types a day- top items lost all their distinction.
2. Trading adds a high layer of complexity to an otherwise mindless, skillless game. The simple truth is that while the game is highly complex relative to its peers, an economy is key for adding depth and skill. Because the game is big, understanding the economy and keeping current is tough! It lets those who are sophisticated gain an edge through knowledge. A binded SFL game becomes ideal for mindless, easy play. But that's the d3 market, not POE crowd. In fact, a SFL POE is less complex than a non bind D3
3. Trading mitigates the luck factor of a bad RNG streak. Although related to pts #1 and 2, , it's key to remember that trading gives you the flexibility to have what you want, even if drops don't fall your way. The normal counter to this is a request to juice the RNG, a very short sighted demand indeed
Disagree quite vehemently with every point. Difficult to describe how much I disagree with everything you have said.

Out of all the arpg's I've played with ladders, they were solely based on level.
Is this ones' different?
I'll be honest, I'm older now, and could give a monkeys-arse who the top of a ladder is ha, so that is part of my stance.
I don't care about players trading, don't care about really anything they do in a game like this as there is absolutely zero competition from how I see it.
Idk. A cut-throat league no idea what that is, but I really don't care, if you want the honest truth. I enjoy arpg's for making builds and watching them become what I envisioned. The rest is irrelevant. I don't really trade much, because once they get said gear etc, the builds reach the end of their shelf-life, so I try to get more out of them by not trading.

I very much agree with OP. A self found league would ruin the game, as would any other attempt to make the rarest items more common.
Bullshit, you get the game for free.
