Self-Found (League) [Thread outdated!]

All of the arguments here imply that playing the game self-found successfully isn't possible right now.

That just isn't true.

This is right and only a small usergroup should dismiss it anymore.
However we see difficulties in different stages of the game for self-found players.

The amazing news: Qarl sees them too. We can only wait, I guess.

possible =/= likely =/= fun

The methods for "success" are repugnant to me. You would probably advise staying away from HC. You would also advise that I take a character through the game that's "easy" then farm for items to make the other characters I play easy too. You would further advise that I watch how others play their characters on videos and mimic them.

Bull.

This is the first multiplayer online 3d game I have played because I don't really want to deal with other people. I have the stupid account name because I did not take it seriously when my friend said I should play. Turns out I like this game.

But I come here directly from rogue based DOS games. So Ladders? Who gives a shit, I have a real life. Other players? Some of them have and share some interesting tricks, but other than that, who gives a shit. I like playing. I don't want to trade. I don't want to party except occasionally with my friend who showed me this game. I don't want to worry about a useless economy that is made up of scammers screwing noobs (I can watch news for that).

I would like to try the crafting system that is touted as part of the game. I would like to try higher level maps at some point, and am trying to build a map base. I realize the drop rate has to be managed for no-lifers. That is why I wouldn't mind a self-found league that account bounds any item picked up, but has higher drop rates. It would mean someday I may have the chance to craft an item which looks like it can be fun. I am guessing there is a less vocal group out there who feel this way, but don't post.

If there is no SFL, that is fine. I will assume GGG did not intend for me to craft or run high level maps. There is a slight disappointment, but I have enough fun as is.

Nothing wrong with "FarmerTed" for a name... but if you contact support, I bet they'll let you change it.

I will have to disagree with this necessarily being bull, it may not generally be possible and it certainly gets increasingly difficulty to do as you approach end-game. But you have to define this "success" first.
I would define success as being able to complete the content in the game.

This doesn't mean crafting awesome 5 or 6 links or finding the best uniques in the game.

It means building a character strong enough to beat the content, this is possible.

Yes, but that's the whole problem, the subjectivity. Your success is meaningless to me.

Even your own definition is vague (beat the content?), likely even to yourself. My success might be doing well in a race. Another's simply clearing Act 1. Maybe I could define success as getting that 6L or perfecting a particular build's gear.

This is not even taking into consideration matters of reasonable acceptability.

So we really do care about things that cause players to quit and not return. So this thread is interesting to me. For example seeing people report Act 2 Merciless as an issue, as its not really an area where we have identified as being a problem.

In my experience Merciless Act 2 is a wall because my gear/skills/skill tree are not caught up. I tend to go through at level, and this is where the mob variety, especially ranged, makes me re-evaluate my character. I usually have not overcome the -40% ele resist penalty, my life/es does not keep pace with the increased damage, and my skills are not blowing things up fast enough. Add to that the increased amount of mobs doing chaos damage and/or causing status effects. This is where I tend to review my skill choices, play style and general tactics. It tends to take awhile as I farm Fellshrine for gear. Granted, I am not a very good player.

I have been meaning to contact support, but I get sidetracked. I came up with the name because my friend's daughter had Farmville up. I want to get rid of the association... sooner or later.
