I guess nobody is going to take into account the fact that the items have to be large enough to show the sockets clearly. It would be quite a hassle to bring up another menu just to socket/unsocket gems.
Typically when I see a blue that may be useful to me, I will pick it up, identify it, see if it's magic mods are good, and usually throw it on the ground after finding out it is a piece of trash. |

" Nah, Diablo 3. When item is equipped you see the gem on slots, the items is in full size, when on inventory you see when you mouse over the item, and still uses a fraction of the inventory space. BEST OF BOTH WORLDS. No way you can miss them. "It feels like holding my breath under water constantly." " theres no way you could have 6 slots/gems displayed on an item in D3. they're already far too small as they are with only a few slots on things like armour. as you mention the description of the effect of the gem is in the item tooltip, however in PoE we need a full tooltip for the gem/skill itself.. so tooltips within tooltips? |

" He means while an item is equipped, it is large enough to show sockets. Essentially, you will only be able to socket items if you have them equipped. |

Welcome to a game designed around an antiquated system for hardcore fans of said system.
Of course there's not *really* any "thinking" about what to pick up. Nothing is worth selling as there's no REAL currency system worth interacting with, and the only reason to pick anything up is to identify it to check to see if its an upgrade. and since you have mouseover tooltips that means you only need to bother with about 1 item in 10. I'm level 28, first time through, maybe 2 days now, and I have basically every gem I could want for my flicker CI build, awesome weapons+some waiting for levels, great-ok but older gear, and am basically doing great, because of rolling and selling a slot of orbs. The normal->magic, normal->random, normal->rare, magic reroll, and all the +qualities give me really good mods and/or really good trades (i have 3 flickers now lol). I make frequent trips, itemize what i grab based on size (I do entirely ignore 6-spaced items other than armors I might need) and whether or not I might be able to use it, and how many other whites/blues/yellows are already in my inv. I have actually traded good skill gems for stacks of wisdom scrolls due to going through so many. |

The problem is that having to think too much about what you pick up slows the pace down to a crawl. With the orb and colored socket system, there really aren't a lot of items you can ignore. I'm also slightly bitter that my bow ranger can only take a few of her chosen weapons back to town, while a wand or dagger character can stuff 3 times as many in their pack. It seems arbitrary and unfair.
I much prefer a large inventory and small stash. That way you do all your considering and hard decisions in town during your down time. The pace of D3 is more fun for me - I don't have to stop and look at loot after every fight. I just snag the stuff that looks like it has potential and move on. The combination of free for all loot and cramped inventory space really drags down an otherwise excellent game. Even when I'm only playing with my husband, having personalized loot means I just snag whatever and we sort it out later. We don't have to stop fighting to swap stuff. |
