Our feelings about Beta Invite complaints

I've read several posts that have some pretty negative comments about how we're handling the Closed Beta invite process.

We have more than doubled the number of keys that we intended to give out in this timeframe and this is causing a massive strain on our time as we try to scale up to deal with the amount of feedback we're getting from the testers. Our initial estimate was that we'd give out 100 keys per day. So far, after five days, 1250 people have access.

Please note that we're not running into server scaling issues. The technology can support hundreds of thousands of users. With this stage of Closed Beta, we listen to each person's opinions individually. We put developers in the Closed Beta discussion threads who ask many questions about the problems and try to resolve each issue. The game is not complete, but we're using this feedback to mould it to what the community wants.

If we invited ten times as many people, we'd merely get times as much support nightmare and massive duplication of the number of issues that are reported. We'll scale it up once the initial issues are solved and most players are having a streamlined play experience.

So given that we have a limited number of keys to give out, we had to work out the best way to distribute them. We initially intended to just distribute them entirely with the timer, but you've seen what type of response there was to that. Even after fixing the timer to also invite veteran users, we received feedback that it wasn't fair.

People probably don't appreciate this, but we've hand invited dozens (if not a hundred) users based on great posts on the forum in the last week. Although there's a degree of arbitrariness to it, so many people have been rewarded for helping others out and explaining the game. Obviously this has missed many valuable community members, but we just can't invite everyone yet.

We've put keys all over the internet in an attempt to distribute them fairly to each group that has wanted them. So many forums, social networks, livestreams and fansites have been given keys to help spread to their users so that those people have a slightly better chance than the timer.

Regardless of all the external keys given out though, the users on our forums stand BY FAR the best chance of getting access.

The reason we prefer slightly random approaches for our public giveaways (for example, asking for comments about why you want a key, and then picking randomly from the best) is that it's trying to avoid the complaints about why we picked one person over another.

We have been criticised by a few users for using our keys as a publicity opportunity (giving them away to fansites and such). Please understand publicity is absolutely mandatory for Path of Exile to succeed. The game is free, and hence relies on exposure to a large userbase to be successful. If we keep it an elite club with only 10,000 people, we won't be able to recoup our investment and won't be able to support the game in the long run. We're very keen to make it successful and to deliver the game you've all been waiting for.

I do really like the idea of running an actual contest based on knowledge of the game. I'm going to talk to the guys about this and see what we can do. We could even turn the timer off for a day and give out all those keys to people who are the first to answer specific hard questions about Path of Exile.

At the end of the day, there will be people (58,000 of them?) who have not been invited yet. Those 58,000 people will probably be upset regardless of what decisions we make to hand out keys.

Please be patient and your turn will come as we scale up over the coming months!

Chris as a representative of GGG you've shown how much the company cares/ and goes beyond what is considered "good service" keep it up...Honestly the whole process has been revolutionary and although it may be painful to many people, I think after its said and done there are going to be many people who will wish future betas from companies list the users who are in line to recieve an email..and who do things like give out invites in forums/twitter/reddit/v/ etc
Streaming http://twitch.tv/insidethesun tue/thur/sunday 11am-3am mon/wed/fri after 10pm and sat 11am-3pm then after 10pm [pacific times]
And waiting in the queue in the shop an hour would you be pleased if someone who has served only come from you? : D
I think keys shouldn't have been given to users who haven't logged in on their accounts for the past few months. Other than that I feel like Chris and the other people in charge have been very yielding to the flood of complaints and beggars.

People seem to forget that this is a closed beta and they expect to get to play as if the game was complete, then they throw tantrums when they don't get invited. It's silly really.

2morrow starts the HOMMVI BETA2 so this helps with the waiting.
Anyway keep up the good work, Chris and the GGG team.

The main problem is, that more and more "inactive guys" get keys. If they want to access the beta as well, whats so hard about looking into the forum again?

So whats wrong with the idea that only those, who last logged in after the 1. Aug. get the chance to get a key?

As i said, the "inactive" useres just need to sign in again and their last logged in date will be after 1. Aug, so they are back at beta again with random timers, so fair for everyone.

I guess thats what is bothering the most guys.

The difference between theory and practice in practice is bigger than the difference between theory and practice in theory
Look GGG is the best! giving out way more keys than they intended!

In the coming months when the boost the numbers let in i cant wait to get ahold of this and spear head any bugs/ glitchs!! (and play till my fingers hurt haha)

Ive had my eye on this game a while , and like Chris said, alot of people that dont have a recent last visit doesnt mean the arent visiting, it just means that the arent loggd in when they do. Remember not everyone has it auto log in or auto-remember there username/password.

I gotta say CONGRATS to everyone in so far!! Now lets stop spamming the forums with complaints and start flooding it with the utmost support we ALL have for this game!
(and we can watch streams so we can all give some imput with more knowledge about certain things, i for one know portals was talkd about in a couple streams but then someone pointd out they do have a new portal look coming, aswell as uniques.[just an example we can do it with almost anything now we can see people playing])

This is actually a good point and I hope Chris (or someone else from GGG) reads it. Lurkers still actively interested in Beta aren't going to have a hard time logging in if they're told they need to.

I'd also be interested in hearing how many of the 1250 keys are actually being used.

Well I do hope you can get a nice number of people if 10k isn't enough to sustain the income needed, Besides, I believe there will be a group of players who will put cash towards the game just for the pleasure of being able to play, rather than the aesthetic appeal of it

The solution is simple:

Get rid of the timer. Invite people under wraps from the public. All this rage is because of the timer in your front page. I am surprised a company such as GGG havent figured that out yet.

OR

Keep the timer but make the name is anonymous something like Upcoming Random = RXXX (name was Rich) then noone can check it and say hey this guy dont deserve in.

a) Many/most of the "inactive" people do still check the forum while not logged in. Our analytics tracks what users return with the same IP/browser.

b) We vary the rate of the timer based on how many people are playing. If keys go out to real inactive people, then we can keep the timer at a fast speed for longer (or speed it up). There has been huge uptake of the keys so far though, which is why we slowed it down a little.

I definitely see what you mean, but we wanted to be up-front and transparent with how the process worked. We wanted to give more information to the community rather than upset them.
