Cherrubim's Maleficence - Supporter's Unique Item Craft Retrospective

Just wanted to thank you for the writeup.

Always interesting to see how the unique designs go in and the work involved and then the end result.

cheers.

The unique Cherrubim looks to be slightly overpowered. I cannot knock its 2D and 3D Art though, because it's a work of beauty. Well done, George.

Posts on reddit begs to differ. They said "vanilla crap", do you believe it?ψ(`∇´)ψ

The chest is a beauty. Can be very powerful in the right build.

Did they give you an ETA on 3d art? I will be finding/buying one - one way or another just for the art! Until I can make a build for it.

Here's my review / thoughts on the item and its mods:

20% Increased Chaos Damage
This is nothing too amazing. Other % increased damage mods appear on other gear at much higher rates. 20% isn't that amazing but does help bridge the gap that the removal of growth and decay left. Looking at the 1.2 skill tree:
-Method to the Madness: 22% chaos damage, with 2 7% and a 5% damage node before it (more damage then the unique)
-Corruption: Only 18% chaos damage but there's also 8% DoT bonus which effects the 2 pure chaos skills we currently have (Poison Arrow + Viper Strike) with 2 10% chaos damage nodes behind it this wheel also gives more damage then the unique.
Damage over Time nodes (which effect the 2 pure chaos damage skills.):
-Entropy: 27% DoT and 2 9% nodes, the notable giving 7% more damage and the other two nodes giving 2% less

-Growth and Decay (RIP, you will be missed T-T): 18% chaos damage notable with 1% life regen as well as the wheel has 2 9% nodes. Both of these give 2% less chaos damage then unique.

200% Armor / Evasion
While this seems like a lot, without IR this is only 800 AR and 1000 EV which are both doubled (or more!) by a decent rare. With IR it becomes 1800 AR which is respectable matching most rares.

+100 to maximum life
Fantastic mod, nothing bad to say here.

30% increased Leech Rate
While being a nice mod in general, for the two pure chaos damage skills in the game this mod is (currently) useless. Poison arrow you most likely deal little flat damage to leech from and you can't leech from the DoT. Currently most viper strike builds use a +3 weapon which usually does irrelevant damage and provides little to no leech. However with the new viper strike in 1.2 you probably will do respectable damage on hit and have life leech. Also to note this mod is 100% useless for Vaal Pact because Vaal Pact you instantly heal 40% of your leech. When you increase instant (100% leech rate) by 30% it is still instant.
However this mod can be useful for a build using Ming's Heart, Darkscorn, Voltaxic, Added Chaos and other Phys/Element -> Chaos items. However Infernal Mantle cannot use this mod (my personal favorite way to play with chaos damage) as it is also a chest.

Comparing this unique to other Unique Chests:
-Belly of the Beast:
-Belly has less AR / EV then Cherrubims
-Belly typically gives 500 life against the 100 from this chest (proof: my 107 life chest gives 200 less then my belly) -- note that this will give even more with the new life per level.
-Belly gives 10-15 all resistance against Cherrubim's 0
-Belly gives 50% increased Flask Life Recovery rate -- especially helpful with the new flask numbers in 1.2
-Belly gives the aesthetically pleasing Extra Gore mod
-Cherribums looks so much cooler then Belly of the Beast
My opinion:
I would much rather use Belly over this unique. Why? It may have less AR / EV but it gives a lot more life, some resistance and the increased Flask Life Recovery rate while losing the 20% chaos damage.

-Carcass Jack
-Gives 690 max EV against the 1000 from Cherrubims
-70 max roll life against the 100 from Cherrubims
-Gives 9-12 all resistance
-20% IAoE -- Helpful for Poison Arrow
-12% Area damage -- only 12% less then Cherrubims and much more used
-Once again gives the awesome Extra Gore mod.
-Cherribums looks so much cooler then Carcass Jack
My opinion:
I would rather use Carcass Jack on a chaos build that uses an AoE attack. While losing life evasion/armor and 8% damage you get increased aoe, and some resistance.

I love the unique and props to you guys for making it but I feel like it could be better and wouldn't be surprised to see changes to it at a later date -- for better or for worse.

To be entirely honest it is very vanilla, life AR / EV are very vanilla and a %increased chaos damage roll isn't really unique. The leech rate mod while being cool isn't super useful for the item and isn't a build enabler like other items.

I like it. It looks nice and it's looking very useful. I hope I find one.

Pretty much. It's sad that the original ideas were shot down, a simply tiny chaos damage boost is really pretty lame considering all the flavour and the chaos theme of the item. I'd rather have added x-xx chaos damage at the least, would be more useable.

My experiences with the reddit community cannot be easily expressed without dipping into the sort of language I'd rather not use in a lady's company, even if that lady is here only in the form of an avatar.

The ones I've dealt with were by and large a mean-spirited lot who talk a big game in their enclave but rarely have the stones to try it here.

As for 'vanilla' -- they're just looking at the mod count. That or, as the poster above indicated, not a build enabler=vanilla. I'd love to see what they come up with. Oh, wait. I have. That awesome 'create your own unique (eventhoughit'dnevermakeitpastthedesignphase)' thread. Yeps.

You can guarantee anyone dismissing your item as 'vanilla' didn't actually read your post; whenever they attack one of mine, it's clear they've not done the same. Sort of makes 'reddit' one of the most bitterly amusing terms ever.

You shouldn't generalize a whole community by a few posts. These are the top posts of reddit which you call "mean-spirited".

"Stats aside, that art is freaking amazing!"

"How has no one said how well put together the thread was? Seriously that was the best thread I have read on the PoE forums. Fantastic work by the authors"

The PoE subreddit is actually quite pleasant and is great at helping out other players. There is some blunt opinions but there is nothing wrong with differing opinions.

As for the item in question. I agree with some of the reddit posts that said the lifeleech mod overshadows the chaos mod which was supposed to be the flavour of the chest. It's a nice unique regardless and this was a great read.
True, I shouldn't. I'll edit that...but only a bit.

GG :)

Job well done, one of the better high end uniques, love it. Drop rate is probably really, really low. Will hope for the best nonetheless ;)
