Shockingly strong flamethrower build (Incinerate + Three Dragons)
Oh I apologize. I get Iron Grip and Iron Will confused all the time.

I have 6L my cloak of defiance a few days ago and was looking for a build to use it "properly". I ended up choosing this one since I also had a 3D which I planed to use on my molten striker.
I've switched to caster build after Piety in cruel, around level 52 or 53, and was relieved to do so. Much more tanky than my leveling setup with facebreaker :p. I could facetank Khole and Piety immediately. Dominus has not been a problem either, but vaal skeletons & haste help a lot here. Act 1 merciless done very quickly, act 2 for the moment is almost as easy despite a low sheet dps of ~700. I'll have to get some quality gems to raise this sensibly. I'll try adc instead of adl too, since I don't have quality on it. For now, the 6th socket is currently used for mana leech (incinerate, fire pen, faster casting, adl/adc, lmp, mana leech). I'd like to put faster projectile eventually. Maybe that will be playable when I'll hit lvl 60, as I have a Lavianga's spirit flask back from Domination. On tree, I have focused only on survivability. Damage nodes, outside of mandatory ones, will come after I've completed the mana regen and block nodes, around level 65. edit: now level 68 so I've just switched from Perandus to Rathpith and I now have more mana than health when Discipline is on ^^. I've given Berek's Grip a try and it's really a great ring for the build. Tha mana leech works constantly so I can now use faster projectile without a problem. Also the flame totem does absurd damage. I think I must be in the 3rd stage of incinerate to compete with it, despite it's only on a 4L and my incinerate on a 6L.
tree at level 68, heading for life in shadow center area
The biggest problem so far is stun. I hope I'll be able to raise my life over 3.5k to prevent most of stun occurrences. It'll be probably hard as I have many uniques without life, including chest. Can't believe how quiet it is around here! Guess everyone is out doing detonate dead builds :)
Anyway, I've been running this build on Invasion and I love it. I ran it early on probably act 2 or 3 of Normal. I had to use mana pots for a long time, but that didn't bother me. Current gear:
Spoiler
There is only one 4% block ammy available and it's 5ex right now. I only have 4 left, but hopefully I can upgrade to it later. My Arctic Armour isn't very high yet, so I'd like a bit more armour... but I'm still doing okay. Passives: Level 74 and working towards the 3 8% hp nodes outside the main Templar area. Probably should have them already, but it hasn't been a huge issue thusfar. Very tanky and very effective build! I can watch 5 people attack an Invader and the hp barely drops. I hop in and just melt it. As far as shock stacking... it's pretty obvious that it works quite well. Not only does everything take far more damage, but you can see the sparkling blue corpses on the ground. *edit* and since I have a 6L... if my mana regen ever becomes completely insane I might swap out mana leech for something else, but right now I really like the leech. Since incinerate does not crit to ignite (it does burn)... aren't you only getting the shock stacks from the tree and quality added lighting gem, not the helm?
Edit: I guess what I am saying is if you take the 2 10% chance to Shock node and thrown in a added lighting damage gem, your incinerate would shock without the three dragons helm. Fire damage has 2 mechanics and incinerate only does the burn damage, same with searing bond. Edit 2: The ONLY thing your Three dragons helm is doing is having your lighting damage from the gem freeze the mobs. Last edited by IamtheAxeMan#6525 on May 31, 2014, 3:55:54 PM

" Welp, I took off this: for this: I did some test runs and it seems I still shock just as often. Good and bad news I guess... I can replace helm for something with nice life roll, gonna miss the 30 all res though. IGN: Sin

"You're right, and I indeed plan to remove 3 dragon once I get a quality added lightning. For now I just use added chaos instead, which is sensibly more damage, and in this case 3 dragon is necessary to have fire damage shock through static blow. Ranger builds list: /917964

I'm using this helm now and since it caps my resists and adds a tiny armor/es as well as base life that I was kinda lacking before. I think another decent option is Geofri's Crest since it also adds a lot of ele res, chaos res, and +1 gems for auras. IGN: Sin

" That's not the case. Without the helm incinerate can't shock. It would be the added lightning part that shocks, not incinerate's fire damage. " No. Without three dragons incinerate has NO secondary effect and ald shocks. With the helmet incinerate has a secondary effect (shock) and ald chills/freezes. Having your main spell get a secondary effect without any downside is a huge bonus imho. Some numbers: Without the helm shock is based solely on added lightning damage. Given incinerates 30% efectiveness penalty you have 38 base damage (lvl20) to get past the threshold and trigger shock. With three dragons you have incinerate's 85 (lvl20) supported with a linked fire penetration for 111 (123 if the fire pen. has 20 qual) base damage. Not only will you get past the shock threshold much better with the three dragons, your shock duration will also be 3-4 times longer than with a mere ald. As shock scales with stacks (which requires long enough shock duration), three dragons has a HUGE advantage over the ald + other helmet combo. BTW this is a Three Dragons Build. To actually suggest dropping the defining part of the build makes as much sense as posting in a facebreaker build to switch to a 2-handed weapon instead. It kinda makes no sense. |

Don't get mad at him for finding out that another item is just as effective if not more. Feel free to use whatever helm you want. I swapped mine out and noticed no decrease in damage or shock stacking... so I'm kinda glad he posted what he did.

" I'm mad at no one. I just pointed out that his assumptions are faulty. It is mathematically impossible that (all things equal) switching the three dragons for another helm gives you the same dps: As added lightning only has a fraction of the damage of incinerate you won't be able to shock enemies with a bigger life pool where a three dragon supported incinerate will. The shock duration is also severly shortened resulting in fewer shock stacks and therefore loss in dps. You might find other mods more valuable (for example life instead of damage or an alpha howls aura mods instead of dps) but from a mere dps standpoint only switching to a helmet that has some offensive mod like hrimnor's resolve (though i doubt it is on par with three dragons dps wise) will not result in a drop in dps. |
