It's not just the league mechanic to attribute to people leaving. I think that people got hyped for the new stuff, then got here and remembered how bad most skills felt to actually play. As bad as Synthesis was, Winter Orb was fun and powerful, so the season was enjoyable to actually play. 3.16 is just 3.15 without SST and a much worse league mechanic.

Lul harvest was the most fun league for me. Only reason being that I had clear progression goals that didnt take thousands of dice roll to maybe actually happen. When the only non rng progression is xp and gem levels we have a problem. Especially because random deaths are so frequent and set you back for hours or days. Also having almost all meaningful rewards locked behind the most difficult content isnt good either. Endless grind and praying shouldnt be the main means of progression early and mid game. Its their game though so if they dont want more casual players, fine. I will continue playing at league starts for one or two weeks and get bored again.

Extra challenge as in no parties and trade? Public games are either beggars or not going the same tempo. That's not a challenge. I'm a arpg fan at heart, but ever since D3 introduced inferno MMMXXXX difficultie or whatever just to blink around so fast the sound starts to cut off or else you just die in the spot. Who are these people forcing obscene game mechanics and keep calling it not challenging enough because that gets them secretly hard.

Challenge as in no trade. It's not like the game is meant to play that way. The drops are terrible.
Lol its not even that the league is bad. The game isnt fun anymore for a lot of people.

What's wrong with having a paced game where you can see dmg taken, feel the enemy moves, have time to plan a few seconds wether to go in or pull out to recover etc? Everything is just going from 1% to 100% life ten times per second while spamming piano flasks... it's just disgusting. Every diablo 1-3 had way better rythm and pacing. Poe has it too but it ends after act4-5 turning into this sigma pc reaction stress test. Not enjoyable for anyone that's not on adhd meds.

They'd have to improve loot drops a loooooooooooooooooooooooot if they slowed the game down to a crawl like you suggest. The whole reason you want to go go go in this game is because the loot is awful and you want to throw the slot machine lever as often as possible.

And that's sadly due to their financing model;
massive lootplosions, 99,9% trash, farm more and faster, hoard stuff to sell, to buy upgrades, to make more currency, which is easier the more stash tabs you got. It's like 70% of their whole revenue, stash tabs sold.

Everyone would love a version of poe that has insane quality drops only with endless crafting options open, tons of orbs which are autolooted, a proper atlas that doesn't need physical maps, and most items being turned into virtual credits like sulphite and azurite that doesn't need to be managed in the inventory or stash, allowing players to focus on the actual game, slower fights, getting down all content bosses in balanced fights etc.

But such a overhaul would basically require a $20 monthly sub fee since extra stash tabs would be almost useless and selling them pointless.
But hey we can dream, right?
Just crashed in gift of goddes lab before 3. phase so i lost 25c on that counting just the key to open it.
I'm pretty demotivated rn because lab is the only realistic upgrade i can make but it keeps crashing CRASHING AND C R A S H I N G
