I struggle with this. I'll start by disagreeing - Chris has said that these build archetypes primarily exist for marketing (to new players). They secondarily exist so that new players can kind of feel-around-in-the-dark their way to a build that doesn't suck.

Both of those (implied problems) are very important problems to solve for, and to whatever extent it's working, I'm happy, because the new player experience matters. And we're all better off with more people liking the game than fewer.

The downsides for someone like me are that they generally rub me the wrong way. I don't like playing flavor of the month things, I don't think I've ever followed a build guide for a character.

It's demoralizing on some level (in real life especially) to want to do something on my own, and then have someone else tell me I have to do something or there are consequences. It's like 'ay, fuck you - I'm not doing this for you, I'm doing it for me'.

So when GGG makes Guardian the Herald of Purity class, or makes Gladiator the blood and sand class, it kind of burdens me psychologically by insulting my perceived creativity. I'm not saying any of that is rational or normal, I'm just stating it 'is'.

So that's my gripe with it, is that playing some of this stuff makes me feel like a noob. (Playing brand Heirophant right now is a good example. I have a plan! I understand that that other ascendancies are considered better by most players! I'm not just picking it because it's the one Asc class that specifically references brands.)
Maybe this rework is good. Maybe its bad. Duno.
Im only sure that after epic chieftain rework this is just disappointing :(

but its worse in terms of it robbing the ranger and duelist of identity and turning the game into even more of a strobe attack twatfest of obnoxiously absurd animation speeds right? like they know thats a problem, theyve got into this thing of always showing off stuff with cyclone where possible as theyre literally embarrassed to show games journalists real melee endgame builds because they look to stupid with all the attack speed in the game.

and then they add 20% more attack speed....

when people say theyve given up and they dont care any more, theyre not even trying to put things back on track, is it any wonder?

gladiator is probably the best all round melee defense class in the game, its way better than jugg, its an argument between occultist, guardian and gladiator for what is the most powerful general high tier mapping defense class in the game imo. There is no way at all that glad should even be in a conversation about clear speed melee classes, if hes even top 5 then thats fundamentally broken.

I tried to play some Bloodseeker DS Glad in Betrayal. The amount of stuns i was getting during mapping was ridiculous to the point I gave up on that char. Just too annoying to play.

Gladiator absolutely is the best melee class and probably will remain so but compared to other classes, he's the most boring one. It's just raw numbers with no magic behind it. Bleed explosions used to provide that magic but that is definitely out of the question now.

Biggest BS I have read in quite a while. Especially the jugg comment.
Have you guys played Delve league? Do you have any idea how bad was the gladiator class there compared to the other options? Compared to jugg?

Even only Unflinching+Unrelenting beats any combination of 4 major Gladiator nodes in terms of defense. Add Undeniable and you beat the offensive options too.

You obviously didn't see the dude AFK at random depths 1000 as glad :p, bottom of delve is extremely niche example either way but glad has absolutely fantastic damage reduction per point.

Don't forget if your gonna do dick measuring on delve they were all shit compared to pathfinder.
