Time Capsule from PoE Closed Beta -- a classic PoE vs D3 thread circa 2012
I disagree, Tagek -- it is not nonsense at all! Yes, the combat mechanics are ostensibly from D2, because Diablo 3 is of course an ARPG/Diablo game. But can we say there are many other similarities, really?
More importantly, and this will work in your favour, can we say that 'combat' is just one of the cues? Wouldn't it be better to step closer and say 'the cues from D2 include but are not limited to: rigid class selection; point-and-click killing,;skills on both LMB and RMB rather than a larger skill bar; life globes, items of varying rarity; and repetition of the main game with stronger enemies.' In that way, D2 is the main influence on D3. However, if we lump all that in with 'gameplay', that leaves other areas. Let's see... Audio: the music is very removed from D2's understated score. In fact, it sounds a lot more like...World of Warcraft. Visuals: oh, do we even have to go there? the 'meta-game': that's what we've been discussing, and it's clearly a result of WoW's success with an auction house -- and current players' demands for such. Skillsets: I think it's hard to deny that what started as an open-ended skill set up has devolved into a hierarchical system that resembles WoW's far more than D2's. At least D2 gave you three trees to explore; at least three different builds per class, even if you didn't experiment all that much... chat/interface: the scrapping of the old Battle.net really began with Warcraft 3, and no one from Bnet 1 liked it much at all. I've heard that Bnet 2.0 is pretty atrocious for Diablo players, but I'll leave that up to you to test, discover and prove/disprove. Either way, that too is a result of WoW rather than D2. So yeah, gameplay wise, D3 is D2 all over again. But once you scratch the surface, it's basically Diablo as envisioned by the makers of WoW. ...and to say that Blzizard's most successful fantasy game (arguably the most successful game in history) won't be the primary cue for their next fantasy game is...what did you call it?...nonsense. Account sharing/boosting is a bannable offence. No ifs, ands, or buts. No exceptions. Not even for billionaires.

" I used to be a huge Blizzard fan back in D1/D2 days until WoW. Dont get me wrong i played WoW for few years and there was times i had a blast however since Burning Crusade game took a derailing direction which ultimately backfired 2 expansions later. Recent changes implemented to WoW were made to cater to diffrent kind of audience by making them easier and easier accesible to the point where the whole challenge slowly diminished. Take recent expansion Asian themed to cater to asian market - more subs to recover from over 1 milion sub loss from last year (despite their efforts). Im not sure if you guys know but first idea for Starcraft 2 User Made Scenarios was to make people pay Blizz for hosting them on Battlenet - sure it didnt get through but you get the picture. They fired quite a few people recently and i doubt it was because they needed freshen up their ranks. No Blizzcon this year - just esports focus hmm. What about negotiations with KESPA to bring SC2 into korean pro league so blizz can get some $ from there given the league popularity in KR. Im pretty sure i could dig out some other examples i just dont the need to. Its clear to me that anyone denying blizzards pursuit of money over everything is clearly shortsighted having facts right in front of their noses. By all means im not saying this is wrong afterall their buisness company but through that pursuit theyve lost their quality over the years which used to be their flagship. Not as bad as EA but give it couple years. This picture says it all :) http://www.gucomics.com/comic/?cdate=20120409 |

" I don't want to get into this again, but D3 gives you far more build options than D2 ever had. But yeah, no more about this. As I've said, they've learned things from wow. They have used them in D3 in the ways they see fit. Some like it, some don't. I do. I don't see how this matters though. I mean, I played wow for a pretty long time. I still to this day think it's an amazing game, I personally just got bored of it and also had less time to spare than when I started playing it, so I quit. But really, if they want to implement wow features into diablo, go ahead. It's all a matter of taste tbh. EDIT: I don't have much to say about this stuff, because I really couldn't care less about it. I will be playing the game, not chatting on Bnet 2 or staring at the auction house all day. PS: I'm tired and my entire body hurts. Sorry if I sound a little rude in any of my posts today. ''Stand amongst the ashes of a trillion dead souls and ask the ghosts if honor matters. Also, to cr4shtest.
You are a typical example of what I would say is someone who is disappointed with D3, and then goes and looks at things like the company who made the game rather than just saying 'Hmm, maybe this game just isn't for me.' You don't like d3, so you're getting mad at a company doing business. That's your right, but it makes no difference for you, or anyone else. If you want to be mad at a company, go take a look at pharmaceutical companies. Blizzard's products are the definition of optional, so if you don't like the product or the company, don't buy their stuff. Period. Seriously though, that comic actually kind of makes me mad. It implies that, just because you don't like the game, the game is suddenly a bad product. This is obviously one of the highest forms of stupidity and ignorance, and really has no place in any sort of discussion other than one filled with trolls anyway. A Diablo II player here,
I can confirm much of what you said, and although I will be playing D3 and even Torchlight II... I think PoE wins hands down. PoE has this Diablo feel that Diablo III does not... oddly enough. |
|
Yep, PoE did a good job with the engine, it looks a lot like Diablo, it looks great (it's really impressive what the did in 3D, the shadows, the blood on the floor)
Is it enough to decide which one is better? Not sure about that. But it depends on people's taste. In the end, PoE felt short for me, that's why I don't think it's a better game. Limited skillset, unappealing gears, basic enemies... The game is still fine. Heck, it's currently #3 in my top list, behind D2 and TQ. But with D3 and TL2 coming, this may change even more. I'd rather have PoE graphics with D3 gameplay... PoE forums ignore list script:

read the OP and I find this the pique my curiosity. If you are indeed such a player as you say you are, and being a diamond supporter I don't doubt it, I take your words easily.
I never was really old enough or curious enough to play Diablo 1 or 2, but I know they are great games, and I do want to feel like I had such an experience to playing the first one years ago. I will probably not donate, because I can't really be expected to donate to a cause I have had no experience with, however from what I see, the game is fun, and the options are vast and varied. I look forward to what this game will become. Alma 48:17

Until a few weeks ago I would probably have bit the bullet and pre-ordered Diablo 3 the same as I've done for every other Blizzard game (saving WoW) going back to the original Diablo. As the final game of the trilogy, I expected it to tighten up all the loose threads and finish what has been a great story on a triumphant note.
Do I hate the art direction? Hell yes. Am I concerned just how deep the WoW design team hsa infiltrated the Diablo universe, very much so. But I know the gameplay is going to be great, the classes will be well balanced, and the potential to buy the game and then make it all back on the real currency AH pretty much sealed the deal. But then I saw a few gameplay videos of PoE, and then came here and saw the Passive Skill Tree. Love at first sight. This game might not have the polish and flash that comes of a game developed with a 9 figure price tag, but it's everything I imaged Diablo 3 would be and a lot more. It seems Blizzard will get their game out before PoE goes live, but if a beta key should fall into my hands Diablo 3 will be hard pressed to hold my attention. CharanJaydemyr, you've not only hit it on the head, you've crushed it with a hammer. |

" I already wrote ill play D3 anyway despite things i dont like about Blizzards direction be it out of curiosity for the storyline itself. As for the comic theres actually another implication whether its farting unicorns or not its D3 and because of that people will buy it. I grew up in Atari times and i remember games from back then. In comparison to whats bein served today with the amount to technological advancement over the years i dare say pity. Luckily there are some games out there that still show the idea for game > everything else - take Amnesia/Minecraft(not a fan)/Terraria(not a fan) - quite popular and all made by indie companies. As i have said i dont like Blizzards decision and yes id like them to get a buttkick hopefully so they go few years back and find their creativity again. That would result in even better games. |

Why can't they just make a game like Nox again :(
