Time Capsule from PoE Closed Beta -- a classic PoE vs D3 thread circa 2012

Sorry to back it up a ways here ( promise I will talk a bit about the more current conversation...eventually ). I have played a bunch of the D3 beta, and I realize it's not going to represent the WHOLE game. This has been an argument brought up before several times, but I could immediately tell the 'feel' they were going for. I admit that D3 has elements of what you could call 'horror'. It's got gore, violence, and all that. It's just hard to take seriously with the exaggerated animation and art style that was chosen. I see the reasons why. Financial reasons are near the top, and I suppose the clear item/character identification may have had some influence on the direction as well. It just doesn't play the way I was hoping for. It doesn't illicit the emotions I want. I felt like I was playing a shell of the game I was hoping for so that they could cater to a larger customer base. I think that is exactly what's happening, and I can see WHY. It's obvious the money Blizzard will make off D3 is going to be HUGE. I just wish it didn't come at the cost of some of the things I really enjoyed about the first two entries into the series.

This style is very clear, while POE still makes me lose track of my character once in a while.

I agree that there is some art that needs to be worked on. In large parties with summoners it's easy to have problems when a bunch of zombies and skeletons are roaming about. This is something that can be fixed without sacrificing the elements that make the visuals so appealing to me. It definitely IS more difficult than the route that D3 is taking, but when a large game company makes as decision because of the difficulties involved, rather than what would be appreciated by the fanebase, it bothers me. Now I don't know the motivations of Blizzard, but they HAVE said that the art style was chosen to make the clarity of specific items/characters easier. I haven't read much where they say that old school Diablo fans would LIKE this art style MORE. Maybe they believed oldschool Diablo fans WOULD love the new art style more than the old one, but they don't seem to be hyping it the way I would expect if they did.

Moving on to the talk about the RMAH. This post is already running long, so I'll keep it brief. It's hard to argue that the RMAH wasn't implemented so that the Diablo franchise would be more profitable. Even D3 pundits aren't making that point. There does seem to be a worrying amount of faith in Blizzard as a company though. There seems ( to me ) to be a lot of talk about how Blizzard wouldn't take advantage of it's customers and try to squeeze as much money as possible from it's customers using the RMAH. Now, I'm not saying the RMAH is as bad as you hear people raving about, but I'm not entirely comfortable with the situation either.

With the recent moved made by Blizzard, one can see sign of possible concern. There has been a lot of moves that seem less about the customer and more about maximizing profit. This isn't something I would like to see from a game company. Yes, they are in the business of making money, but the manoeuvring should be done from a different stance. It shouldn't be 'What can we do to get the as much money FROM our customers as possible with game x? '. I more like the stance ' What can we do FOR our customers with game x so that they will want to support us with their money? '

There is a definite distinction between these two mentalities. I'm not entirely sure of the motives of Blizzard these days. Are they just looking to milk the franchise? Or are they going to try and make something great and make money off the positive impact it has on the customer base. D3 won't be bad. It's clear already that it's not a badly made game. Blizzard still makes well made games, but ( again for me ) it just seems like they are just that. Well made. There seems to be a passion and a love that isn't there any more. Paranoid? Maybe. But if I was going to try an just milk every game I released, and not try to work towards the betterment of a game ( to reap the rewards that would entail ), Blizzard is doing the things I would do to milk a franchise.

I actually take pride in my ability to be succinct and haiku-like elsewhere, yknow! Forums just bring out the ranter in me. In us all, I think.

Okay, the point was that while cashflow and budget can definitely contribute to problem-solving and keeping things running smoothly, they can also complicate things very quickly as well. People can get greedy, bureaucracy can take over, and at that level, money itself can become quite abstract. I'm sure there are some people on this board who probably feel *I* am guilty of this loss of clarity, but they're not getting to design a unique item, so :P to them.

Seriously, I really do think that Diablo 3 is going to confirm once and for all if your faith is well-placed or my lack of faith really is a disturbing capacity for foresight.

But don't take that to mean I'll suddenly convert or change what I like/dislike. XBox turned out to be a crashing success, and I still don't really like it. So did Twilight. Okay, low blow, I'll take that back. I meant to say 'so did Glee.'

Point being, I jumped ship with the skill rune changes -- well documented, moving along. I won't climb back on board even if the RMAH works perfectly fine and D3 isn't somehow, someway, broken by its greedy, needy, feed-me-I-don't-care-how-just-do-it playerbase.

I wouldn't say they did it because of the difficulties involved, but because it simply worked out much better.

Well if you look at it from the other side, even though you might not like many aspects of the game, others do.
For example, I personally like pretty much every single aspect of Diablo 3, and I am convinced it will be one of the best gaming experiences of my life.

I don't think they are catering to the masses per se, but rather making the game as good as they can make it in their vision. I'm not saying they aren't catering to the masses at all, because let's face it, any decently large company does the very same thing (and they should), but:

(Summing up my whole point on this matter)

Just because you don't like a game's direction doesn't mean they are milking it, as people like me, who like the game will attest to. After all, who are you (or me, or anyone) to determine what a game should be like, and when something is being milked or not. Hell, D3 comes out 12 years after it's predecessor, if that's milking, then pretty much every franchise in existence is a cow-farm.

Hmm well I guess what I have to say about this can be summed up to: 'We will see.. mwaha.. mwaha.. mwahaha.. MWAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAH!'

No one really knows how it'll work out.
Ultimately though, the amount of fucks I actually give about how it works out is roughly equal to the answer of
1 X 0

Why? Because I won't care what other people do.
I didn't in D2, and I won't now.
All I will be doing is enjoying what (to me) will be one hell of an amazing game.

In other news, League of legends developer RIOT-GAMES announced a sequal to their aforemensioned game.
Said sequal is currently rumored to go by the name 'Path of Exile'.

Blah, I haven't even played League of Legends. I hated DOTA with a bleeding passion. I don't think that's a fair comparison at all.

Come on, rise to the admittedly small challenge. Diablo 3 takes more cues from World of Warcraft than from Diablo 2. There's the gauntlet I'm throwing down, because I think it really distils ALL my problems with D3.

I'm not talking art direction, either. Not primarily. I'm talking everything else.

Keep in mind also that there is at least some logical basis to my conclusion: the makers of D2 have moved on from Blizzard; the makers of WoW have not.

Saying Diablo 3 takes more cues from WoW than from Diablo 2 is just plain nonsense, as (besides other points) the base of the game is still the combat. Which is obviously based on their previous installment. Furthermore I don't see why it even matters really. They learned a lot of things from wow, and are now applying them to D3 where possible.

Yes, some people might not like it, but on the other side a whole lot of people do like it. There's really not much more to be said about that.

Sorry that I can't offer much discussion here.. but there's not that much to discuss really. :P
Some like it, some don't.

Anyway, I'll be eating something for a while.
Will probably be back in an hour or so.

I was only speculating. Though one does wonder about the scrapped work of the original Blizzard north team ( who later left ), and the rumblings from former Blizzard North employees that they were unhappy with how Diablo 3 was being developed, and what the end result really means.

I freely admit that it comes down to personal taste, and that D3 will have a HUGE customer base. I don't claim I'm right ( or that there even is a 'right' here ). All I'm pointing out is that I had hopes that D3 would build upon the aspects of D1 and D2, rather than the change in direction that was taken from the prequels to D3. You must admit that there is a distinct change in direction at least? If you can admit that, can you at least see where some people may be disappointed? Don't get me wrong. Blizzard is under no obligation to please me or ANY of the old school Diablo fans. In some ways it doesn't make sense to cater to the old school Diablo fans. We don't nearly match up with the WoW fan base. So it obviously makes more sense to keep as many Diablo fans as you can, but try to get those WoW customers as well. I certainly DO understand it. I just wish there was a way for a company the size of Blizzard to bring it all together in a way they haven't ( again for me ).

I do think we have a difference of opinion there. I'm pretty damned sure they ARE trying to cater to the masses. But I'm not one of those saying that Blizzard is TRYING to alienate old fans like me. I'm sure they want me as a customer. I'm sure there was consideration, and lots of it, put towards getting old Diablo fans to buy D3. I am of the opinion that there was MORE effort in bringing in their 'new' fans though.

Well the development of D3 has been interesting to say the least. From all accounts, everything don't by the original Blizzard North team who made D1 and D2 was completely thrown out ( most people seem to think this happened around 2005-2006 ), but that again is speculation. In the end it is a long development cycle, and a large investment. That being the case, the temptation for a game company to milk the franchise for all it's worth would be large. This is more a commentary about Blizzard than D3 itself, but it can influence the game, and I think it just might. If there is more focus put towards the profitability of a product, then the quality of the product could suffer. Blizzard does have the resources to do both, but if their focus isn't towards the quality of the game ( or enough focused that direction ), there could be some serious issues.

.. again, sorry for all the speculation. It's not my issues with Blizzard that really influenced my opinion of D3, or RMAH. I AM aware of it though. It is a concern I have.

Well I do acknowledge (and I have plenty of times) that people have different opinions. If you are disappointed with D3 that's fine, but it won't matter for my enjoyment of the game.
