SET FREE THE ASCENDANCY POINTS (or rework the lab) [New ascension methods/lab rework ideas]

There are understandably those younger fellas/ladies that have no idea of games and their history and ofcourse they find the lab "refreshing". For the rest, older base of poe :

Thats what lab feels like, an annoyance, a game copy pasted from the golden age of arcades and implemented inside another COMPLETELY different game and playstyle, and on top of that IT IS THE PREREQUISITE to get MANDATORY character progression SKILLS. Its quite difficult to say on game from another is some situations aint it?

GGG add alternatives, DONT PUNISH and DISRESPECT your players by putting allienating MANDATORY content inside the ARPG, we came here FOR THE ARPG POE NOT THE ARCADE XBOX CONSOLE ONE.

If I take myself as an example this is how the grading system works if we use 1-5 as hate - like scale.
monster bashing - 3 (neutral)
theorycrafting - 5 (like)
trading - 2 (somewhat dislike)
traps - 3 (neutral)

So, the sum is 13, which is still above the midpoint of 12, if I hated traps it would drop the score to 11 and I would leave the game. True, it's a simplified way to look at things but it does illustrate a point.

What's your score? :)

monster bashing - 5 (like)
theorycrafting - 4 (somewhat like)
trading - 3 (neutral)
traps - -1 (boring, tedious and irritating)

So, the sum is 11 and I don't play anymore. Hey it worked!

Well you can't possibly play anymore because you spend all of your time shitposting on the forums about how much you think the lab is boring. Lets not forget maintaining your "massive" list takes a significant amount of time and effort as well.

I remember a couple of years ago that you promised to quit PoE forever if they ever introduced SFL. Why don't you make good on that promise?

Of course it did, my tables are good as gold :)

If they don't do something about deteriorating game balance my theorycrafting score might go down and monster bashing drop even further, dunno if I'd keep playing then. To give credit where it's due, the cutoff threshold for PoE might be 10 instead of 12 because there's no real alternative out there.
Wish the armchair developers would go back to developing armchairs.

So today's announcement was pretty interesting. Dan and Josiah's take on labyrinth and what worked/didnt while they were making it.

The presentation amongst other things mentions :

- The Prison had some of the earliest gauntlets we designed. This one is affectionately nicknamed the "Frogger" gauntlet. (deleted shortly after)

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAAHAHHHAHAH

so all the people beating me for calling it frogger.

Well the devs compare parts of the the game to frogger too so ...................

I haven't played in 4ish months so I can not attest to currently. The game is much easier than beta, much.

Its just less fun because of the Lab and other content that feels so different than Diablo2 it makes me sad.

At its best this game took diablo2 and EVOLVED it into a much more evolved game with amazing depth and amazing gear synergies worth grinding for a month to play. The SKill system also had amazing depth.

Through all that it still felt like diablo2 but much bettter.

Now it feels like something else less fun, but still easier than when it was fun.
Todays announcement really pissed off the white knights who all that time were saying lab is the same as core poe and other bullshit like that and those complaints werent solid cause were totally made up. Having the devs literally confirming/saying the lab is completely different from PoE, or we called that gauntlet area frogger, or posting pictures of Prince of Persia and Super Metroid showing how similar they are, really says alot not only for this particular design but how xbox port development affected and will continue to affect PoE design.

Unfortunately (for us the older playerbase) and fortunately for everyone else including white knights and GGG the newer waves of players take lab as core part of the game, and while they too feel disgusted by it in the start they learn to get used to this part of the game no matter how shitty it is.

GGG can literally put racing simulators, turn base strategy elements and ping pong games and gate behind them ARPG core parts, and WK and the new players wont even mind. You let this shit design remain as is in the game, you should feel responsible for the game's quality decline and bastardization, but you cant because you probably havent even understood yet what has happened.

Actually, the major reason why D2 felt so incredible good was not because it was in itself so good but because it wanted to be different from D1 and because it had little to no competition. Before Diablo I and more so Diablo II RPGs on PCs had to be focussed on developing your character and they had little to no pacing. Diablo essentially combined Action Adventures with RPGs. And those Action adventures themself oriented from old arcade games. If they would have had the technology to make Zelda in the early 80s they would have done so because it was a natural development. But arcades had to be short, because you couldn't make a game that lasts a few hours to play through and the Atari lacked the technology to do anything so Action Adventures developed during NES and were exspecially prominent on SNES (exspecially due to the success of Zelda).

Something people often forget is that ARPG is such a wide spectrum, much as action adventures were. Skyrim and Darksouls are ARPGs, with a different perspective.

So the only issue Path of Exile had that in difference to Diablo II it didn't include traps from the get go and I'm pretty sure with the issues on desync it would have been a bad idea to do that. Of course Diablo II traps were mostly meaningless, but Skyrim actually has very nice traps that actually are deadly and it is fun to lure enemies into them. Personally when I play an ARPG I expect traps, Action Adventures had them, a lot of ARPGs have them so why shouldn't Path of Exile have some.

And the other thing is, someone used the word "focus", how does the lab has a focus on traps. It doesn't. It has traps, that isn't deniable but you spend as much time fighting enemies than passing traps and once you know all the layouts you spend a lot less time on traps than on anything else in the lab.

That is a thing top down ARPGs had going for them for a long time. Most ARPGs today like Darksouls or Skyrim go for 3rd or 1st person perspectives. So if you want a top down ARPG you have little options, exspecially since D3 turned more into an Action Adventure and removed many of the RPG elements. Grim Dawn is really good, but it isn't as long lasting, it doesn't provide so many things to do and endgame is essentially running around searching for nemesis spawns.

Because they didn't. All they did is make it possible to play SSF in the current leagues, basically what people are already doing, allowing them to actually proof that they did it.

I bought D1 and D2 when they came out. They felt simular to me just an evolution. POE felt like a major evolution down the same path, till the frogger era.

D1 and d2 had no adventure it was like you said though a new pacing and completely new feel.

The problem with D3, I play it time to time is not that it is a bad game. Its a pretty good game but its not Diablo2 or an evolution of D2. Its a completely different game in that your running 4 minute scenarios with 4 people, ignoring almost all the content for blue, yellow and boss mobs and getting way more loot than is necessary for very minor upgrades constantly.

POE until the frogger era felt more like d2 than d3.

Now both feel like something else though I do play D3 still occasionally.

I am hopeful d3 will get back to its root if they do a d4, adding back a real summon class is a step in the right direction. I am less optimistic for this game but I hope it does I think the developers have more scope, though the Lab snafu makes me pessimistic.
