The Chisel Bubble: Using currency to roll maps, vs buying maps
"There's a reason "bubble" is in the title of this thread. We are very far from a proper economic equilibrium currently; properly utilizing trade in mapping, on a large scale, would lead to a decrease in value of mapping currency and an increase in trade value of maps. This would bring optimal map rolling closer to conventional wisdom than it is now, but not all the way to it. Nice post will follow. I like the summary diction as my eyes glaze over at maths. I know I should just buy maps. Its a principle thing more than anything. Paying for content WTF?
I only like trade to go one way first of all growing my currency count at others expense. Then I like to save for high budget items not maps Git R Dun! Last edited by Aim_Deep#3474 on Jan 19, 2016, 12:39:19 PM

"Imo, it's exactly as Aim_Deep says: paying for content, WTF? Ranger builds list: /917964

Rolling maps is paying for content, too. Might as well pay less. *shrug*

Up until the point of chisels this amounts to nothing but penny pinching that doesn't account for a lot of variables.
Time needed trading. Limit of time a person can dedicate for mapping (if I have time for 5 maps I would rather those maps have high IIQ). But most importantly the cost of the alch being off set by the increased number of drops in the map. Currency drops, maps, chaos recipe, vendor rares, quality gems for sale or gcp recipe, chance-able white base items, and white hammers for chisels. It can not be stated enough that an alchemy orb is only 2.56 alts. It will pay for itself in the map in one form or another. This is solo mapping, there is no one stopping you from picking up everything of value. It is nearly impossible for maps not to pay for themselves until the higher tiers. But you aren't arguing against the use of alchs and even chisels in the higher tiers. Creator of the Praxis ring.

Ahh, tasty, always these assumption of a linear correlation between drops (and map drops) and quantity. Also good that OP found out that chisels are useless and overrated (overpriced), while that was done already 2 years ago...
If you want a nice read about map drops, chisel and that stuff you can easily go here: http://maps.skyl3lazer.com/1000-data-points-first-impressions/ and https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/807964/page/4 with some nice non 1st semester math and reasonable conclusions. You'll notice: a) there are some threshold values (thats mostly for the old magic monster mod, i dont know, if they are still in) b) diminishing returns in map drops as a function of quantity c) chisel only have a marginal effect and aren't it worth most of the time (but i will still chisel, since im rich, not selffound and can buy some :P) Ahh, btw. quid pro quo Welcome to the greatest of arenas, Duelist. God is watching you.

@Fluffy
It's important to remember that you'd get about 75% of those drops anyway, if you just Trans+Aug'd. So your argument is not that you'll find 1 Alch worth of stuff in a map from loot drops, because then you'd find 0.75 Alchs of stuff if you didn't Alch. Instead, you need to loot at least 4 Alchs worth of stuff in an Alch+go map, aka 3 Alchs worth in a Trans+Aug, on average, for it to be worth Alching. I imagine this can be true for some MF characters, but assuming no large bonuses to IIR I don't think you'll find 9 Alts worth of vendor fodder in the typical Trans+Alt map. That's at least 4 portals of typical vendor fodder. I might want to collect some actual data though. In any case, if high MF then go for it. However, widespread Alch use could make them, you know, more than 2.87 Alts each. When Stephen Colbert was killed by HYDRA's Project Insight in 2014, the comedy world lost a hero.
