I'm doing a build similar to this one, and I don't understand why the OP doesn't use or mention elemental proliferation as a support gem for the ice spear totem. If one guy gets frozen, they all do. This is especially great for champion packs and rare packs, as the normal monsters around them will constantly get frozen, causing them to freeze also, whereas it is impossible to keep them frozen normally due to reduced effectiveness against them.

I'm also curious about the lightning variant. I've tried added lightning damage socketed in, and I don't seem to be getting the visual feedback of the enemies getting shocked. I'm wondering if it is working, and the chill/frozen graphic simply over-rides the shock graphic, or if I'm not getting shock.

edit: from the wiki:
"
Shock: 276ms per 1% max life dealt as lightning
...
If the duration based on the damage would be less that 300ms, it's ignored entirely.

So yeah, the shock variant would seem to be basically worthless.

I'm rolling with a crit-heavy build just without the lightning, works great. I let lightning-ppl shock for me..

that was the issue all along. I just didn't have the chance to solve this problem recently to make it better than crit DMG. And lightning spear sounds cool

can anyone tell me when to stop leveling curses? so far i don't have mana cost issues with lvl8 curses
Does this build take Mana or All resist from bandits?

at lvl 20
I'm lvl 47, I was doing great up until now, but I'm getting destroyed in the later half of Act 3 Cruel. Creatures with weird ranged attacks, supersonic leap attacks, poison bombs et al. My totems don't last too long either. I have a lot of spell and elemental damage(I have Windscream boots), maxed resistances, 600 life, 550 ES. Not an awful lot of armour and evasion though, both under 20%. Using GMP, faster casting on totem. Concentrated Effect on Fire Trap. Increased Duration on Conversion Trap. I have Discipline like lvl 9 or so too, but the added ES doesn't seem to do an awful lot.

I'm planning on finishing the cold passives in the shadow tree, respec out of that int node and then get cast speed and mana nodes. Basically what the guide dictates, so far.

Could my issue be my playing style? Or is my gear just not good enough? Help would be appreciated, I really like this build.

Build here

Let me start by saying I'm not great about knowing you should have XXX ES at lvl blah, and YYY DPS and resistances at yadda yadda.

Reading between the lines it may be that you're a little socket reliant in your gear at the cost of ES, etc. I had a similar problem. You may consider swapping out an item or 2 for a more defensive related piece. Also, it doesn't look like you've taken advantage of the Body and Soul part of the tree (upper left, above double-totem). Those really add up by multiplying whatever ES pieces you have.

The other thing worth mentioning is that the mobs you're having trouble with are the same mobs most builds have trouble with. Packs of archers suck pretty much no matter what if they all fire on you at the same time. Same with poison/fire grenade guys. Keep your totems in front of you and staggered close together (so they'll fire at the front one but the 2nd one is still in range - just beyond 2nd stage of spear distance - behind it).

Right around the level you are now is where the build really took off for me, so hopefully it will for you too!

I'm just finishing up these damage nodes here and then I'm getting the Body and Soul ones. I'm trying to upgrade some of my items to provide a bit more ES and I might consider using Discipline on a full time basis later.

I suppose Act 3 Cruel really is a bit of a struggle then, my other characters hit a wall around lvl 50 in Act 3 Cruel too.

Would it be a good idea to finish this and go to Act 1 Merciless, provided I can maintain my resistances and increase my ES, or should I stay here for a while?

Edit: Note that with Discipline I'm sitting at a more comfortable 866 ES. And yes, I've gotten an upgrade shortly after writing my initial post :p

Max out your curses, just don't link them to anything that ups the mana cost.

I got mine linked with increase AoE, no real issue for me other than 50% regen maps.
