One of the Weathered Carvings in Act I said something like:

Kaom led 500 of his best men underground to follow his visions in his dreams, but he was tricked by the darkness, and the darkness swallowed him.

Thats he one I was looking for! :)

Im certain that the volcano island is the last act and that this is where Kaom decended down. It could also be Doriyans cradle.

I do not think Kaom is dead. Id bet a kidney that Kaom will be the penultimate boss of POE.

I also wondered if we were going to fight corrupted Kaom. This whole volcano thing really ties that together.
Bump for justice!

If anyone has any more ideas or theories, or evidence to back up current ones - come with them.
It seems that most of the trouble occurs when gems are bound to living things. We only put the gems in items. Perhaps that spares us the worst of their corrupting influences.
This is the best thread on POE forums.

Thanks for making it OP, and everybody else that contributed.

I have to say I'm not really interested in the Lore when playing. I do like these reads though. One thing that did keep with me when playing is when you meet for the second time Captain Fairgraves and especially what he says when you return the items he requested.

Look at the sheen on that plum. Is it not the most delectable fruit that you've ever seen? No? Perhaps the gloss of hope is for my eyes only.

Wondrous! Nothing bonds two souls more soundly than murder. For that reason alone, I knew you could be relied upon.

Now, for a little amateur vintnering. A quick squeeze of the plum like so into the decanter... oh my, look how it transmutes the juice so swiftly. From material to spectral. Effortless. And what an aroma! Imminent death never smelled so sweet. I believe I shall call this fine concoction 'the Imperial Nightcap'.

Now, before I get too carried away, there's the small matter of your recompense.

A toast, to swift endings and promising new beginnings. Oh, and you might want to avert your gaze once I have quaffed this diabolical brew. I doubt that my return to solidarity will be a pretty one.

Right! As I used to say in the love dens of Trarthus... bottoms up, girls!

Oh my, now that's an unusual sensation. I... oh dear, something is amiss. The Allflame, it's... no... no, no, no, it's gone out! What have I...

What are you? No... you cannot be... I will... not...

That last sentence really wanted me to learn what is going on in the game! I never listen to any speeches or so throughout the game but encountering that captain again I was convinced he was going to attack again so I thought lets listen to what he has to say. I was like what? what am I? then poof he is gone :(

Eramir says something similar in Act 2 after you hand in a certain quest, I'm pretty sure. Something along the lines of 'for a split second, you appeared to be something else'?

I wonder what could be going on? Do any of you guys who are better acquainted with the Lore have any light to shine on this? :)
I think Kaom will be the embodiment of this beast. Look at his artwork ... fiery, definitely fit to a volcano area.

Kaom just looks badass. I really want there to be a cutscene where the player, upon killing him, cuts his chest and eats his heart to absorb his power. 'THis is the REAL Kaom's Heart!' hahahah

It didn't seem like he was talking about the player during that part to me. I interpreted that bit as Fairgraves seeing a manifestation of death coming for him just before his (un)life ended. Something akin to the Grim Reaper.

That said, it is possible that what Fairgraves was actually seeing was a manifestation of whatever dark entity presides over Wraeclast coming to claim his soul... which brings up an interesting point. Could it be possible that this "dark entity" is death incarnate? It'd certainly play into the tendency for humans that die to rise again as zombies, for if this dark being truly is an incarnation of death, it stands to reason that it would be able to manipulate souls/life energy in such a manner.

The possibility of possession taking place in Wraeclast brings up some interesting points related to this. The cannibals that took the place of scavengers in Act 1 are clearly possessed by some sort of malignant spirit, as evidenced by said spirits bursting forth and dissipating when you kill them. Is it at all possible that the PC actually died laying there on the twilight strand and only got back up once something else decided to inhabit his/her body? If so, it would explain that brief moment after assembly of the pendants where Eramir sees something "completely different" in your place; the power of the artifact once recombined could have briefly exposed whatever it is that took refuge in the PC's body.

*EDIT*- This is further supported by Alira commenting on the powerful aura surrounding your character.

If the PC is possessed, though, then it raises more questions than it answers: What exactly is it that decided to make you its host? What are its intentions? Is it benevolent or malevolent? Can it fight you for control of your body? If so, will it ever do so?

Oh, the possibilities...

The "nerfs" in this patch are in response to the rest of the rebalance and so that many builds are simultaneously viable. You can't complain that there are only seven good builds and then complain when we balancing the power level :P

@Manfred: The theory that you died and the dark spirit (Or something else) inhabiting your body is awesome and plausible.
