Lore: Map of Wraeclast, new act predictions. Final act = Almost certainly volcano/underground.

Read the first word of the title of this thread, and it should tell you that you should not be here. There's no point to commenting when you, yourself, do not care, when people obviously do care (and it's a substantial portion of the game).

I don't really care, just thought your reply was dumb.

He created this thread lol, reading comprehension at it's finest...

I wish they would just create a Lore page to be honest.

Awesome thread!

Really interesting theories you have there.

I love how GGG makes it a challenge to figure out the story.

Thanks for the post!
Interesting... Has anyone ever played Gothic (1)? It's been a while but as far as I remember it as some underground god (the sleeper) as well.
"Fixing the endgame was hard - No matter how hard we buffed red maps, people would keep spamming Gorges.
So we turned Gorge into a red map"
Can you say, Lavos?
There are 3 lore/ text bundles to be discovered in the library. They spawn random, so it is kind of annoying.

One goes about the purity rebellion. With names and details. Tells how the Ezomyte fought vs a gemling legion, losing 3 men for every 1 gemling taken down. They did win that first battle, after which reinforcements were send against them (this would be the end of the Ezomytes on the mainland, leaving only the Eomytes on the islands of Skothe(?)) remaining. With Sarn sending reinforcements against the Ezomytes (in a province somewhere on that map, where we probably visit in the future. Gives you an idea how big the empire was), Voll and his templar take their chance in Sarn (and of course succeed). It was Victario who persuaded the Ezomytes (their love for poems).

There are more such texts in detail about the purity rebellion, but it hard to just think of all the names.

The 2nd set of texts are sort of a diary from Victario. I only found a page 4 that details how a friend of his gets a gem implanted to play better music and how this slowly turns his friend. His music changes into a dark kind of music.

The 3rd ones are the ancients texts and tell about the Vaal (aftermath) and early days of the empire. The Vaal were a civilization of millions, but at the end only 3000 refugees were left that were taken in by the Azmiri (?) who formed the eternal empire. They call this even the Fall and is most likely the same thing as the twist, which happened after the purity rebellion (3 years of Voll as emperor or so, Voll the one taking over Chitus). Victario is mentioned Sarn Mayor and some other names such as Ondar and that guy in the templar church/ crypt.

It is also mentioned in another text that the dark thing was driven by the Azmiri into a cave and they sealed off the cave, to be forgotten. The location is mentioned quite detailed actually, so the Azmiri weren't able to defeat it and eventually they succcumbed (twist?) and followed the Vaal. They managed to kill off most Vaal constructs etc. and were cleansing the lands of these in the early days, which shows that the game constructs and Vaal pyramid were/ remained undiscovered, or at least forgotten. The virtue gems were seen as the downfall and in the early days of the Empire, they became forbidden. The Azmiri would remain, unlike the Vaal and thaumaturgy was banned. No idea why under Chitus his rule or later on this changed, but you can bet that Chitus and Malachai weren't the only responsible ones.

It would be great if you could find the actual texts all of them online, the random library spawns are kind of annoying to chase down.
I also think that. New Zealand has geothermal geysers and stuff, same as Yellowstone in the US. Seeing geysers go off and bubbling mud would be a cool setting.

Also kind of scary when you read the lore. The gems allow you to use magic, but they corrupted everyone that came before. Now you come in and purge the land of the latest threat, by using the same gems that corrupted them. Can only think the gems are like crack and all our characters are already well on their way to becoming monsters.
More connections to underground:

Virtue gems are mined from the ground. Since everything seems to revolve around them, and what they actually are still hasn't been revealed, this can't be coincidence.

The Vaal Pyramid was underground. Right beneath Sarn in fact. It contained a dark creature of some kind as well.

Thaumetic Sulfite, is mined. Presumably from the ground. We don't know what it's for, but it corrupted the miners body and mind, and probably has some thaumaturgical use given that Malachai wanted it.

The Scion's flavor dialogue strongly hints at an infection coming out of the ground. Or at least hints that she believes as much. Granted, she got the idea from Kaom's carvings. She also is able to empathically feel corrupted monsters, presumably because of the shared infection.

Remaining Questions:

The modern Azemri are apparently immune to the darkness. Why?

Why is the darkness contained to Wraeclast, sparing Orriath and Ngamakanui? Or is it? Templar and Scion both experienced prophetic nightmares before their exile.

Postulates:

The overall theme is one of Sin (yes, it's capitalized in in-game references. Siosa and Victarios writings iirc) followed by corruption of the sinners. It's overwhelmingly likely the darkness itself has it's roots in some kind of great Sin.
-addendum: so far, all of POE's examples of this corruption involve some kind of undeath. Significant?

The usual path of this kind of story is one of redemption through rejecting said Sins, usually in some great act of selflessness. Alternately in the tragic version (Example: Faust), being given the opportunity for this act and refusing, resulting in damnation.

It's heavily implied that the Hero (us) is following in the footsteps of those who came before. The power of the PC is derived from the gems- where does this leave the PC if they reject the corruption? Perhaps we have a tragic ending in store for us instead.

Each of the classes is guilty of some kind crime. Is there a list of the various in-universe Sins anywhere? The only confirmed one I know of is Vanity courtesy of Siosa. We can take some guesses at least:

Duelist: Pride
Shadow: Greed
Templar: Pride? (he was accused of blasphemy according to Nessa) Disobedience? (perhaps his faith is true, which led to conflict with the Templar Order who follow Dominus)
Ranger: Disobedience? Theft?
Witch: Malice or Revenge
Marauder: ?
Scion: Murder, obviously. What Sin does that fall under though?

Regardless, it's pretty clear that each character has something heinous that they can be redeemed of at some point.
