Yeah, fair enough. I get it that crafting is pretty much the only game in town when you've grown out of what "the economy" has to offer. Since I'll never get that far I seldom think about it but you are right.

I'll amend that to say, "Unless you are truly looking at end-game gear... 6 link shavronne's and the like... then buying is the way to go."
I don't trade. I don't group. My comments reflect that.
I don't partake in the crafting system other than the odd item while levelling a character. (Minimal orb use if I do.) Once I need good mods with the right links and socket colours, I'm totally only trading.

I think the whole system could benefit from a large overhaul. The large variance is just inhibiting for many players. Perhaps orbs that add specific qualities, or a crafting vendor with less variance (but without access to the highest tiers of mods, maybe).
When there is no item, that fits my needs, or when there is maybe one but totally overpriced item, then I start crafting myself.

My best experiences when crafting with Chaos:

Helmets, Chests

My best experiences when crafting with alteration,regal...:

Belts, Gloves, Amulets
Examples:

I didnt try to craft many Rings or Boots until now.
But for Rings I'd say that Chaos Spamming is as bad as for Amulets, though I crafted only a few Rings like that at all(with alteration/regal):

I cant say much about Crafting Boots. Probably because there were always some I could buy simply or didnt need better one.

About Fusings:

My best experiences(In both cases I didnt aim for 6L, I just wanted 5L):
Spoiler
100 fusings without one 5L
3 fusings

My worst experience was when I tried getting a 6L, used 300 fusing got 6 times 5L, didnt try it anymore. So it seems when you want to force your luck, you wont have luck xd

The whole idea is great on paper; using orbs that re-roll affixes, add them, re-roll the values, re-rolling socket numbers, links, colors, base values etc. I enjoy(ed) rolling maps, for instance, using different approaches as to what to do with them. I may have wasted currency in the meanwhile (I'm 99% sure that I've spent WAY too many chaos orbs than the actual value I get within the maps), but it felt satisfying.

If I didn't get the rolls that I wanted, and I was out of currencies, I would still try to run the map and adjust my strategy, skills or even gear.

The flaw with crafting your item is, If you have a good item that you are using that you wish to improve, the system can punish you for it.

I had a vaal regalia with 760 ES, 40 int, 44 lightning res. 4L 5S. It still had 2 exalt slots free. However after burning 6~EX worth currency on it, I ended up with a piece of item that was 1) worse then the version that I have 2) did not allow me to progress anymore since my build didn't work. Surely, after 600+ jewellers and 500+ fusings, I would get a 5L - I thought.

The 4L5S was not worth the eternal obviously. If I had a 5L6S and attempted a 6L (god forbid), I may have used an eternal.

So you see, If I wanted to craft myself a 5L armor from scratch like suggested in the thread, I would have to make a new vaal with 760 ES, int, and a high res roll, or something that comes really close to it. And that is hard. That may require TONS of currency. And If I don't get a similar armor to work on, why would I start investing jewellers / fusings on a piece that is inferior to mine stat-wise?

Edit: This seems more fitting to my original post, I will include it there as well.

Yeah, crafting is horrible in this game. And buying stuff inside the channels is also not that enjoyable.
Vote +1 to change Path of Exile to Path of Nerfs.
We hate to say, but ProjectPT was right.
sad but true
I understand OP and agree that crafting is unrewarding.
IMHO a 6S, 5L, 6L vendor recipes are a must in PoE.

~500 jewellers = 6S
~500 fusings = 5L
~1500 fusings = 6L

As a casual player it will take me 1-2 years to accumulate 1500 fusings. Does it sound hard enough to you GGG? If not, lower the orbs droprate...

MHO.

Crafting is one of the main reasons I play this game.

It is difficult and you have to know what to sell and when to sell it if the crafting on a certain item is going poorly or you will go broke - especially when balancing that with rolling maps.

That's why in Onsl there are a small percent of people that sell a large percent of the nice items. The majority of them are high level crafted items.

Complete truth, agree with the op.

Crafting is useless in this game, just wait for someone to find a good drop and buy it.
