I think that this debate is going in circles.
The majority of the poster are expressing dislike and concern over the current system. the minority of poster are defending it claiming that FFA is part of the meta game; a rush; provides greater freedom; and allows you to build community.
I agree with the community point. My concern is that a player who focuses on loot over teamwork will be able to obtain wealth at the expense of others. Without the tools to monitor and block offending accounts from joining your public party Open Beta public groups will be rife with frustration.
I would personally like to see an updated dev response on this subject.
If they are not going to change the system. I will use the next month to build my friends list so I never have to use the public party system in OB.
If they have already decided to change it. I would like a chance to test it out.

Ranged is at a disadvantage in a ffa style environment. There should at least be a option for the party leader to decide if it will be ffa. However, I don't think the game could be designed for the leader to choose no ffa so therefore the loot you see should only be able to be picked up only by you.
You have to take the good with the bad. Ranged is at an advantage because they are not right next to the monsters.
I swear people seem to want this game to be just a giant guild. Where you can publically ban someone for "stealing" loot you didn't get to.

I just don't see what the problem is: more players in-game = more loot, faster killing speed, and more safety. The trade-off is that everyone gets a shot at the loot since you all shared in the effort, so you pick up what you can and shrug off what you miss. Sometimes the best item will drop right next to you, sometimes it's all the way across the screen...it's not that big of a deal. There will always be more items.
I do not want to compete with my fellow players, especially those already on my team. In Any Way. Ever.
Honestly, you could guarantee me 90% of the loot, triple the killing speed, guaranteed not to die, and I still would have no desire to play in a public group.
I accept and respect that other players enjoy this sort of Go Go Go competition. What I can't wrap my head around is why those players are SO freaking bent on not offering others the OPTION to let me enjoy the game the way I prefer, while I let them do the same.
It's because most people aren't asking for the option, they are asking to change it completely. I have brought up options many times on these forums yet everyone just ignores that and argues that it should only be one way or the other. I like real FFA, some people like to have their own loot. A few people like the current system but I think it doesn't provide the outcome that that GGG intended. Where it was placed to allow further away characters a chance at loot, it has instead become "that's my loot, it had my name on it for a second." The party leader should decide what type of loot system is used when making the party. It can't be changed once people have joined the party without some sort of vote or everyone has to be in town.
I have also shown that having options doesn't require any kind of major loot drop overhaul. The individual loot system can just use the current system without the countdown. Everyone can see the drops on the ground but can only pick up items that belong to them.

At a minimum you should be able to set up loot rules when a group is formed.
So far loving everything in this game, UNTIL I CAME ACROSS THE CLUSTER F THAT IS FFA LOOT IN GROUPS.
F2P games attract trolls GALORE. LoL is proof of that. Why not foster group play, instead of discouraging it with FFA loot tom foolery.

If there are loot "rules" set by someone then the only public games played will be instanced loot games.
1) Its easier game play to not have to pay attention to half of what’s going on.
2) Who would join a FFA game by choice when everyone would assume the reason someone made the game FFA was with the intention of stealing your loot?
If they really did consider adding loot rule settings, they would be better off saving time and just use the same system as D3 and skip the settings and balancing for that.

I CLEARLY stated two reasons backing up my statement. do you agree/disagree with them?
