[Retracted] WASD Movement
I don't support this at all this would just ruin the whole Diablo 2 type feel of the game. Games like this don't need WSAD movement, I seriously hope GGG won't consider this. Though I'm pretty sure they won't as they're hardcore Diablo fans themselves.

But the point is, it isn't going to ruin the Diablo 2 type feel of the game because the only suggestion people have is for WASD to be an option, not the default setting.
When will all the people that enjoy using their mouse hand for 90% of the input realize that this change would not affect them whatsoever? The only way it would affect you at all is if you were pvping, and someone using WASD managed to beat you because it is a superior control setup for competitive gaming. At that point, why are you even trying to say no to WASD, just because that isn't how a traditional hack and slash is played? Who cares about what the tradition is for a control setup to prior games in a genre, if something works better and is more comfortable, use it. If it isn't for you, you don't have to use it. |

Don't know about 'tradition', but my reasons are as follows:
1) Using only eight directions of movement looks out of place in a game where both monsters and other players can move in much finer increments. This wouldn't be a problem in Diablo 1, but we're a long way past that. 2) It impacts PvP, regardless of whether it's under- or over-powered compared to point and click movement. Whichever one is overpowered leaves players who are used to the other system at a disadvantage. 3) It makes kiting harder to balance. I'm noticing a lot of support for this option because people don't like clicking on one side of the screen to attack, and the other side to run away (generally more an issue for ranged characters than melee ones). This takes time and attention, and, to a certain extent, skill. Holding down one or two keys to back up while you pick out your targets takes much less of all three, even if you do stand in one place while attacking. Now, how do you keep this from being too easy for ranged characters able to use this tactic? Can you simultaneously keep it from being too hard for ranged characters who don't, or, more importantly, melee characters? I have wandered through insanity;
I have walked the spiral out. Heard its twisted dreamed inanity In a whisper, in a shout. In the babbling cacophony The refrains are all the same: "[permutations of humanity] are unworthy of the name!" |

I think the single most important aspect of this feature, is the OPTION for it to be either WASD or click-to-move.
Personally I would prefer WASD, as I can have complete control over my character instead of relying on however their "pathing" works. This allows better control for dodging, and setting up line/aoe effects. Hot key's should already be programmable if they aren't already, as this is a necessity for a complex mouse, or just ease of use for a player's style. My question with this is "Why Not?" If it's just an option, it would open the appeal up to either group of players, and no one can feel left out, or feel that the choice takes away from their game-play/authentic feel. ~MatthewD |

WASD combo with mouse would be nice, but will make no hand completely free for skilluse. I think ill go for mouse only in teh end in that case anyway, but an option is never wrong :)

" The increased number of angles a mouse can use isn't that significant, as the resolution of the game isn't huge. Anywhere you go with a mouseclick, keyboard input could go almost as quickly, you just end up having to go at a diagonal then a straight line or vice versa. That could honestly be one of the tradeoffs of using WASD, that your character might have to travel a slightly longer distance to catch up to something, simply because you can't always exactly take the hypotenuse to another character's exact location. So WASD would make it easier for kiting, with mouse clicking being slightly faster at catching up to people that are kiting. " This primarily ties into kiting, since that's the main pvp impact it would have. As I mentioned before, point and click would be slightly faster at catching up to someone that was kiting, while WASD would make kiting easier at the cost of possibly not having quite as many directional angles to choose from for movement.[/quote] " The issue is though, why should it be 10 times easier for a marauder that's up in your grill to do damage, than it is for you as a witch or other class to kite that marauder? You end up literally doubling their number of mouseclicks when trying to kite them. I'm all for the game taking skill to play, but ranged characters should have roughly the same skill cap as a melee, instead of the current situation where it ends up being way higher. |

My thoughts:
- Disable WASD in PvP matches - PvE WASD and significantly harder monsters |
|
wasd is helpful but its not a necessity especially in a beta phase.

I think that WSAD is a good add on but shouldn't be default! It should just be another option. I don't think it would be used very often though because the organic design of the caves would make if highly difficult to navigate!

Negative on WASD.
Point and click. Hack and slash. |
