PvP is really hard to balance in a PvM game, really have to decide which is the main priority or you end up with a clusterfuck of op fotms like wow.

It's pretty hard to tell anything about balance at this point. Most of the pvp is one sided ganking. Most of the players are probably really goddamn terrible at PvP. All of the PvP is either at really low lvls or super low lvls.

Really what we can tell is that some classes get better skillgem rewards in the first 90 minutes, but I don't know how much that would matter in anything but a 90 minute cutthroat ladder.

For example there is nothing in this test we can use to talk about possible PvP balance in default league arena pvp where everyone is high lvl and has access to every single gem.
it's a general statement not directed at anything, just stating that it's really hard to balance both pvp and pvm at the same time, hard enough to a point where I don't feel any game has ever hit that mark.
Winner of the First Ever Cut-Throat Server Test, and Winner of the First Ever Cut-Throat League Event!
Ah yes.

Well maybe the vast complexity and customizability of PoE will allow enough variation amongst the dominant PvP builds to keep things interesting. It certainly feels like a game where at lvl 90+, things that seem OP in the first month of the game will then be outclassed by clever builds later, which will then be outclassed by clever counters, etc etc

Because yeah, attempting to impose top down Starcraft level balance on this passive tree and skillsystem is frankly going to be fucking impossible :D

Balance as a whole most likely is impossible, but I feel a sense of relative balance at key points during the game is within reach. Personally I feel the early/early mid (lvl 1-30) and late game (90+) are the most important for balance as they will be the most played at imo. 1-30 will be an important due to short term events leagues and 90+ for the permanent leagues so you have a reason to grind that end game gear. Of course balance during the rest of the game is important too but I think these two areas should be the priority as it will account for the majority of game plan imo.

Then again I'm just jealous I'm not a PvM stud like IMD, he too damn good.

After doing a test run, I'm sure IMD hoofs it, possibly with 1-5 other pairs of hooves.

I've done some test runs going off of time charts from previous events and I can stay within 10% xp of him til about lvl 14 then he just destroys me.
Winner of the First Ever Cut-Throat Server Test, and Winner of the First Ever Cut-Throat League Event!
I just looked at the full chart again for this event and judging by the steps, MrF and joechip were partied.

I recently asked how the top racers are managing to level so damn fast in the following thread.

I've tried this a few times now and am still impressed with the skill these guys have. Especially in Hardcore.
I'm BACK :)

Whenever I try to fight above my level this early in the game I always end up feeling super weak and slow and picking up a bunch of gear I can't even use yet. I guess the XP curve still supports doing it, but damn it certainly doesn't feel effective.

I hear you m8 and for exactly those reasons I say that I totally respect the skill these other guys have.

For the purposes of this Cut Throat race, I initially ran to kill Brutus then turned back to kill other chars. Unfortunately with so few players in the game it turned out to be a waste of time cause all I could find were level 2 and 3 chars so I put my mind back to the XP race.

PS. I think "Luck" also plays a Huge role in how you race. At the end of this race for example I only had 2 rare items and both were FAIL!
I'm BACK :)
