Playing Self-found
I played self-found for the first several months of playing PoE. I can't remember exactly when I started doing trades, but I believe it may have been during the very first long term event league: the 2 week HC race league.
Ever since I started trading (and when I started there was no trade interface. You literally had to drop the items you wanted to trade on the ground, typically in mud flats, and the other guy did the same, lol) I have found that it's really satisfying to sell extra skill gems I don't need for chance/alch/chaos orbs. I have even gone so far as to save a set of low-level gear (redbeak swords + blackheart ring + araku tiki amulet) just to rush characters up to about lvl 12 in order to get the most popular act 1 skill gem quest rewards to sell them for alchs later. So yeah, self-found was fine for a while, but now that I've experienced the satisfaction that comes from buying and selling orbs/gems/gear I don't think I could ever go back. |

Just like to add that in my 2 years playing I have never traded with a player I wasn't friends with.

I find it more difficult to play self found, unless the economy crash hard and prices are messed up. It is always better in terms of efficiency to buy items with currency you found or made through trade.

I've got a bunch of characters, all self found (72 Ranger, 68 Templar, 55 Marauder, 52 Shadow and now starting a witch level 13). As of right now, I have 13 unique items and many good high level rares, including a 1222 evasion chest piece and 320+ dps, 2 handed mace. The only thing I've traded for was 3 skill gems, and I plan on trading for a Lioneye's Glare when I've accrued 20+ exalted (sitting at about 7 or 8).

" You need to roll yourself a farm character (aka Ranger/Witch). Since I rolled my Ice Shot Ranger, I've never had problems gearing the rest of my alt characters. It's really a matter of patience at that point. |

I've played entirely self-found so far. The closest I've come to trading was giving away some scrolls of wisdom back in CB. Haven't got any high level characters yet though (I play HC and suck) so I may succumb eventually.

im also playing self found, i started PoE 2 months ago and i went directly for HC, it has been a blast so far and i havent lost one char (wel i lost 3 but those were durring races do they count? xD crappy multiproj kuduku motha****** XD)
Atm i have a current of 6/7 chars my highest is lvl 52, but since i play only melee progressing is very slowly and painfull, but in return the reward is inmens joy :) Btw this might be a cool tip for u self found players out there, create a couple of chars 3/4, and specialize them in different defensive atributes, then level them up next to echother, all 4 to lvl 10 etc then to 20 etc...i find its a good way to swap gear with "ureself" and it helps progressing a lot, and eventualy u can pool ure items to one char to progress further then the others and farm for them :) Trade is just mindboggling for noobs so i dont bother with it :o)) and i seem to be able to progress quite ok with self found, my lvl 52 melee ranger is in act1 merc atm wil see if i reach endgame :). (but damn those new unique claws sure look nice '-.- what would be the chances to find 2 of those for my claw ranger? xD guess i wil have to make an offering to the RNG god...) Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes

" That is a cool tip. Cheers. I might start doing this after my next death. |
