Our feelings about Beta Invite complaints

Please note that we're not running into server scaling issues. The technology can support hundreds of thousands of users. With this stage of Closed Beta, we listen to each person's opinions individually. We put developers in the Closed Beta discussion threads who ask many questions about the problems and try to resolve each issue. The game is not complete, but we're using this feedback to mould it to what the community wants.

Based on this quote, it looks like only active users should be chosen to be beta testers.

I checked and you don't need to post to be considered "active" so as long as they log in they are active. This includes lurkers who log in.

The only ones possibly left out are those who skim the forums but don't log in. Is that a large enough population to worry about?

I can guarantee most of active users on this site would be more useful than the person who made an account 10 months ago and never logged in since.
I play sc2 at top 0.1%, D2 casually few years ago, Dota for 7 years real tryhard, casual league of legends.

I love my beta key! Got some feedback about quest direction, projectiles, UI, and a lot of compliments about the art style.

I will pretty much wait for the game to become open beta at this point unless i win a Beta Key from the random lottery considering that the only real possible chance to obtain a Beta Key in my opinion is in fact the random lottery.

If in the long run that gets removed then that will be fine, basically that will free me up from having to return to check in time to time, but instead check in within a few months.

Kinda of a bonus if you know were im getting at considering returning to forums after X amount of months to find out how much further the development of this game has progressed, which would have me pretty much at the edge of my seat reading up on all the new details.

I just think that maybe if you guys let us know a time frame in which you are giving out guys on Twitter and FB (which hasn't seen any keys yet??), then we don't have to sit here all day refreshing the pages.

I mean the idea is for publicity, but I don't see the benefit in having your community sit there and hit F5 all day. It makes the let-down that much worse when you worked that hard to get a key. At least when people know an event is coming up, they don't have to feel glued to their computer for a chance to win.

I really like the idea of the twitter and FB give aways with the picture of the keys, but I can't be refreshing twitter or FB all day every day like this :(

Sorry but many guys over here in the forums dont get what this "Giving Keys on Twitter, FB or other social com. sites" is about!

Its about spreading the news of PoE Beta to a wider range of people, not only those in the official forum. Its about motivating externals to come to the forum, join the community and play the beta.
To put it in a nutshell, its about reaching people who are not a part of the forum community yet

At least thats what I think it is!

Sure, a lot of guys in the forums also follow PoE on twitter, FB and other Sites but mainly its a tool for external ad, as far as I understand.

I'm fine with the idea of the random timer, but is there a way to exclude accounts that have been inactive for an extended period of time? Some of the accounts being given keys have been inactive for 8 or more months, which is more than likely the main reason for so much negative feedback toward your method.

While I agree that most of the complaints seem to be about inactive accounts getting invites, who's to say that they didnt sign up with an email that they check regularly.

The best solution IMO would be a third timer for active users but increase the time so that you send roughly the same amount of invites per day. This would give active veterans the best odds of being selected and people wont feel as if all the invites are wasted on non-active users.
Thanks for posting this, Chris.

I was one of those voicing a disgruntled opinion on the divvying of keys. Of course I'm still extremely interested in PoE; I wouldn't bother informing you of my displeasure if I didn't. But ultimately it's just disappointing to spend five days glued to my PC hunting for Beta keys only to see someone that signed up on the 13th win one via the lucky dip (which did happen).

After my recent competition loss I've just resigned myself to checking my email and getting lucky as it seems like an obsessive interest isn't really rewarding me.

Still look forward to playing your game in the future, and if that should be during Beta then I look forward to providing feedback too.

If so, we'd have to be very careful to make sure people understand that "active" does not mean "spamming". For a while people thought that the number of posts mattered, so we saw thousands of tiny posts that just wasted everyone's time.

Guilty as charged, sir... Sorry! I'm just desperate to put some support gems on a zombie gem, lol.
Templar Shadow Knight (build in progress)
That's what you get for making an awesome and interesting game. Maybe you should've opted for the WoW-Style graphics like Blizzard did to deter the beta testers
There's absolutely no point in criticizing your approach. I don't have a key yet but i know there are thousand people who wanted in beta as much as me and they can play. We all had the same chances.
