Cyclone

I need help figuring out how and if "critical weakness" curse works with cyclone.

Cleave is ALWAYS better when DW,

And I think this is a problem.

Not only is it a STR/DEX skill and, as such, fits exactly right for Duelists who have a tendency to Dual Wield.

That DW characters have no choice in what skill they use, both Dual Strike and Cleave are obviously the best, is not good for the game.
If Cyclone would support DW, it wouldve been an awesome skill for Duelists.

So I AM saying that GGG should have made Cyclone work better with DW. And that they didn't do that gives me the opinion that they didn't accomplish with this skill what they should've had.

Yeah, I was surprised when they announced the skill was DEX/STR.
But the few weapons that needed an AoE were claws and maybe facebreaker.
No need to replace Cleave I guess...

i noticed latley that when you kill these little crabs, that you have to "kill" twice, in one cyclone the second monster that pops out of the shell does NOT get hit by the whirl that killd the "shell".

i dont know if this should be that way cause the second monster ( the one without the shell)
was not there when you startet the initial cyclone but it looks kinda weird when they get no dmg at all.

i rly noticed this when i had a map with these crabs + tar zombies.

Played around a bit more with Cyclone and made a new char for it, having quite a good time atm. Using this awesome low level axe since level 41

and arrived in Act 1 Merciless today. If you don't cripple your movement speed, the safety added by Cyclone is huge, unless of course you desync. Went for pure physical damage, together with a Wurm's Molt I had no problems with the mana costs. The low damage effectiveness lets you whirl almost unharmed through physical reflect. Thought about going for elemental damage, but decided that it would be a waste of the high phys damage increase of Cyclone. Started chancing Karui Mauls, Marohi Erqi seems like the ideal weapon to me, and should have enough punch to get through the armor of those monsters.
€dit: Oh, and you better watch out for those Lightning Thorns. ;)

I still find this skill to be a disppointment sadly. I'm gonna just say what I wish would be done to improve it.

1. Allow stationary use, at the minimum distance's mana cost and duration. Lightning warp can calculate how long it takes to get somewhere with your characters movement speed, so doing the same for cyclone and making that the duration while using it and holding shift wouldn't be impossible. This would make the skill a lot more viable for those who move too past enemies too quickly to get a decent DPS out of the skill, the mana cost is a total afterthought when the skills nature makes it too weak damage wise due to the characters movement speed.

2. Make dual wield hit with both weapons at a 40% damage reduction. This is simply to give dual wield players a reason to use cyclone instead of cleave, which is currently the only DW friendly AOE skill.

3. Think about adding some kind of armour reduction effect to the game. Due to the low damage effectiveness of cyclone the damage scaling vs armour mechanics become very apparent. This isn't necessary but I think it'd allow more high speed low damage skills like this to exist without needing to focus on elemental damage. I made a thread to suggest it here http://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/267177

Otherwise the base mechanics and balance of the skill are ok, but overall I think I and a lot of others were hoping for more out of cyclone and didn't exactly get what they hoped for. Why else would this thread be 57 pages long :P

Whirlwind - the holy grail of melee skills in the history of hack and slay.

57 pages, i guess there are 2 possibilities here:
1. Cyclone is the most loved skill in the game and is back in business
2. Cyclone is the biggest disappointment until now and a huge let down for d2 lovers.

Feels awkward and sloopy to use. Thats a generel problem with this game, but this skills is the worst, i mean srsly, atm it feels best when you are heavily slowed...

Big dissapiontment in my opinion..
I don't think it feels sloppy.. infact its rather easy and fun to use.

but its problem is the damage effectiveness.. it just doesn't do enough damage even with some good support gems.

ive got around 10+ mana leech so I can do it endless and thats nice.. but it needs a damage buff to be viable as far as time is concerned.
I was a bit reluctant to use cyclone after seeing the really low damage effectiveness and all the bad publicity it seems to get. However, I decided to pick up a gem and level it in the background. It currently is lvl 14, I'm level 65. So it's not where it would be if i had picked it up at start, but it's getting close.

Since I don't want to screw up my working skills (I'm just trying out cyclone to see if it works atm) I havn't linked it to what I want it to link it to ideally. So right now it's linked as: Cyclone-Faster Attacks-Manaleech-Melee Physical Damage. The DPS displayed is a lot lower than for cleave, and I mean A LOT 800 vs 2.8k or something. But I decided to try it anyway.

...I can't believe people are hating on this skill, it is simply amazing! It hits so fast that I leech insane amounts of health. Where I had to have max endurance charges up all the time to kill a pack with cleave... I can now safely spin through and not die! I literally just kept spinning through a pack that was to big to fit on my screen, there was even an aura yellow guy in the pack. I easily survived.

Also it looks like if you crit with cyclone, you crit with the entire cyclone... which is totally insane. Surgeon's flasks fill up really fast and I only have 12.5% crit, so I am in no way specced to max crit. Needless to say the damage of a full crit cyclone is retardedly high.
If I would make a build to get high crit chance it would be awesome. But like I said: I'm not crit specced, and I'm already loving it.

Now there might be some drawbacks too if you look at the skill. I already mentioned the low damage on the tooltip. But like I said, getting a full crit cyclone makes you hit like a truck on steroids who's got a real good reason to be pissed.

Second drawback is the high mana cost. Base skill costs me about 30 mana if I recall correctly, with my current support gems it costs 54 mana. Now I guess this is easily fixed by running bloodmagic, but mana leech will also completly fix this. I can comfortably keep spinning through packs without ever going low on mana.

Third thing, and this might be the most annoying, is the fact that you're locked in the skill. Once you start spinning there's only a couple of ways out. And none are fun. Freeze will stop you, bear traps will stop you, and obviously... death will stop you too. Now I've seen a lot of people saying increased movement speed is bad for cyclone, since the longer you're on top of a target, the longer you're hitting it. While I guess this is true, the lower your movement speed the longer you're locked in the skill too, and sometimes the skill likes to go quite a bit further than you clicked. Cycloning through a pack of archers is fun, cycloning way past those same archers while you're not leeching anything and they're turning you into a pincushion... less fun.
So I choose to have movement speed increase. You get all your mana back pretty fast, so I don't see the need to get the most bang for your mana per cast. And getting out of the skill lock faster might be worth more to you then getting a few more hit per run.

Wow, this turned into quite the wall of text.
I just wanted to share my opinions on this skill that a lot of people seem to think is garbage, while I'm loving it.

TLDR;
Try it out for yourself, don't go by what other people are saying about this skill (including me, you might hate it ;)).
-Crit seems to synergise really well with this.
-Leech/bloodmagic can cover the high cost
-Movement speed doesn't HAVE to be low to be able to use this.
