Nobody wants an automatic respec lol
At least we are in agreement there!
Current respec system is very good, not sure why people are so against it honestly. It does exactly what is needed, allows a character to easily fix some mistakes with no investment, but prevents completely changing the identity of the character without some investment. Still seems good to me.
Why? Answer is simple: Does it allow to alter larger portions of the passive tree without unreasonable effort? Quicker than leveling another character? If it doesn't, then it isn't a respec system in the sense that I picture a respec. When leveling a character is a better respec system than orb of regret something is off.
If picking up orbs of regret is 'unreasonable effort' than yes leveling another character is quicker. When leveling a character is a better respec than orb of regret than you are wanting to change your character from one build to another entirely not to fix mistakes. In this case leveling a new character should be the more frugal decision in my opinion. You can still do what you want it would just be costly.
Again this is simply a difference of opinion. You want to be able to switch from a spell casting witch to a bow witch at level 80 with little to no investment/cost. I don't feel that should be the case.

It does. It's not better to lvl a new character. Just sell few chaos and high orbs, and youl get your respect. I always stack orbs of regret to sell them to people like you.
I'm still sceptical. And running after regret orbs feels slightly retarded. That's not any kind of fun gameplay. Why not just have a full respec as a guest reward for example and get it over with? This I don't understand, what's the point of torturing those who want a respec by making them run after orbs when the end result is the same with a less annoying respec method?
Is it some kind of fetish? (Im kidding!)

Can you explain why switching from a spell casting witch to a bow witch is a bad thing, or how it even affects any other player in the game?

Its a fetish =). You made somthing wrong, so you must pay. If you die in game you lose somthing. The same is with respect. Its a game in a game. If you didnt make your build good, you need to pay for error. The only thing I would allow is 1 full free respect per character for new players that dont know the game.

Well actually I would like to fix a possibly sucky spellcasting witch to a good one. Mostly likely one I made sucky on purpose because it's more fun to me to assign points freely than do it optimally right from the start, which often requires boring "study". But I don't understand why do you care so much about my investment?
I've already suggested compromises that favor heavily the views of the anti-respec crowd, but they seem to be hell bent on their views unfortunately

Honestly I feel that people should be punished for randomly assigning points. If any thought at all is put into it you wouldn't need very many orbs to fix a build on top of the 8 respec points already given, and I assume they are probably going to add another similar quest for respec points. Why should the game cater to people just randomly clicking passives with no thought? This is just as valid a question as 'why do you care so much about my investment?' Truth is I don't care about your investment, but I do care that the game makes your choices meaningful by making them, at least to some extent, binding choices.
One full respec as a quest reward only usable on that character would be acceptable to me but by no means necessary. I would prefer they did not add it simply because I would rather Orb of Regret have some intrinsic value.

Because it allows you to bypass the level progression that a bow witch must go through. You can simply level as a spell casting witch as she scales much faster in the early game, and once you get to the level that you could reach AoF, catalyze, pyromaniac, etc..., you simply respec to that build allowing you to bypass the actual character progression. If you do not view this as a problem then that is fine, but I would think from a developers perspective this would be a bad thing.

But a bow witch is a niche build that no one would want except someone who specifically wants to challenge themselves by using a wacky build through the content. Why on earth would a bow witch person bypass the content? That makes no sense

Its just a random example from previous posts, and I am sure better ones can be made. The point remains you are simply deflecting it with semantics.

Not really, I could use any build in place of bow witch.
Your point is that because of respec people are going to bypass content and hang around in town or something. To me that makes absolutely no sense.
