Hard crashing PC locks up

Debacle of a game launch. Never have I ever felt more robbed by a media entertainment purchase where I’ve spent money and am unable to consume the content. And the fact they’re radio silent makes it so much worse. If there was any transparency or some sort of explanation and subsequent timeline for a fix I’d just fuck off this forum and not rage post. Absolutely mind boggling to me that last epoch can launch in early access by a studio that entirely works from home and be more functional.

At least you can play Concord.

There i said it sue me

At this point its either this or they are gagged as to who to blame (MS or nvidia or themselves). There is no way they can be so incompetent or arrogant enough to ignore the overwhelming amount of complaints.

This has to be the fault of GGG. It’s the only game I own to behave this way. I’ve had crashes across various games in 10 years of pc gaming, who hasn’t? But nothing has ever, I repeat EVER, required a hard reset of the entire PC upon freezing. Usually the game just shuts itself or I can task manager my way out. I wish I could get my damn money back but I’ve exceeded the steam refund time, cause my crashes didn’t start happening until hour 3-4.

I added a new build to PoE Uncrasher that should avoid false positives from virus scanners, but it requires .NET 9 to be installed on your computer. I don't remember if this is something that tends to be installed by default nowadays. But if you have issues with it getting flagged as a virus, that can be used instead.

As a reminder, if you run this tool it should prevent freezes from locking up your computer. If you run the tool as an administrator (rightclick -> Run as Administrator), it should automatically recover PoE when it freezes.

I've had good success for a couple hours using this tool. Very nice work on this!

I fixed it

Until today I was able to play POE 2 really well and didn't have a single crash or restart. Then today I did the Windows update to Windows 11, version 24H2 and immediately after playing POE 2 after about 30 minutes I got a freeze and the PC rebooted. After that I reset the version and downgrade to 23h2 and everything worked again.

So something must be wrong with POE and Windows Update version 24H2

This is not a Win 11 issue. There are people in this thread that crash with Win11 23H2. Every single OS can be affected by this. Mine is Win 10. There are people here on Linux. Please do not repeat this Win11 24H2 nonsense because this is what GGG wants to avoid fixing this issue.

Furthermore, I ask anyone who sees this message to please give a negative review for Path of Exile 2 on Steam.
My game was fine until this most recent update, now my PC freezes

I have had some good success with an app called Process Lasso. You can use this to specifically set a rule for the PoE2 process to drop to IDLE priority and unassign 2 cores if the CPU usage rises above 95% for a second, and then remain at IDLE for say, 10 seconds. And then resume normal processes.

Find the tool here: https://bitsum.com/

To do this:

* Open Options, CPU Limiter
* New CPU Limit Rule:
Process match: pathofexilesteam.exe
When CPU use is: 85%
For a period of: 1 seconds
Reduce by this many cores: 2
For a period of: 10 seconds.

I also use ProBalance settings:
Advanced/
Leave all settings except:

Lower to idle priority instead of below normal: Ticked
Ignore all foreground processes: Unticked
Change affinity during restraint: Ticked
CPUs: 2-15 (or how many cores you have, just ensure you start at core 2)

This has immediately solved the issue for me - and it even decreases load time dramatically as well. Any tool that can reduce the CPU priority and remove cores will probably work, but this can be done on a rule basis per running process.

Of course, I cannot say if this is guaranteed to work for everyone. But I can say I've had hardlocking constantly, and I've now been able to play for 5 hours continuously. Except for one REALLY off bug that may be a server issue (says my controller is unplugged then dumps me back to the login screen).

This is the only fix that worked for me, I have tried everything from reinstalling the game and drivers and messing with settings on everything. Now the loading screens actually load quicker as well. If anyone is reading this post and hasn't tried this, give it a try until GGG fixes the issue, because no other game hard freezes my PC like poe.
What in damnation have you done?

Are you guys having full PC crashes, or just game crashes?

When my game crashes, it always takes the whole PC with it. Doesn't matter if I'm running the game with Cores 0,1 disabled or not.

Windows 11 (Steam), AMD 5800X3D, RTX 4070 Ti Super 16GB, 32BG DDR4 3200, Samsung 980 Pro SSD

IM NOW 85% SURE ITS A PROBLEM WITH THE NBIDIA DRIVER DETECTING POE 2 AS PATH OF EXILE.

IF NVIDIA ISNT DETECTING "PATH OF EXILE 2" YOURE GOING TO HAVE A FATAL SHADER COMPILER ERROR. TESTED WITH 2 PCS FIXED NOW.

I put some thought into this post and what I then did has totally solved the crash freeze issue that has plagued me since buying POE2... no other solution posted thus far has helped. 5 hours of play in 3 sessions + at least 20 portals across all parts of the game to test.

1. Uninstall POE2 and if you have it POE1 as well.
2. Important... delete both POE1 and 2 folders from your Documents/ My Games folder.
3. Do a search on your drive(s) for anything "Path of Exile", highlight all results and delete the files and folders then do the same search for "Grinding Gears" just in case there's any remnants that may be there. Then, empty your recycle bin!
4. Clean your shader cache... empty that sucker.
5. Rerun a scan in Nvidia App and make certain Path of exile is gone from your installed games.
6. Restart windows.
7. Do a fresh install of POE2 only (don't install POE1)
8. Start the game and redo your settings to taste. I left it on DX12 to really test it without Vulkan. Then exit the game and then restart it.
9. Ready to play... load in and hold your breath.

Once I was loading in I noticed the gears turning much smoother. When I started playing, I ran about while shaders compiled. The game was much smoother and ran well. I ported around maps and was overjoyed when they all loaded without freezing. Hard to explain but everything was running much better.

The big question... Is there a conflict between the 2 POE versions causing issues?

PS. Just did another 2 hour session and no crashes! CPU and GPU are also cooler.

I did all of this and Nvidia still sees POE2 as POE1. Also did not help the issue for me as hard locks ups still occur.
