Hard crashing PC locks up

So what the other guy said? All this is doing is kneecapping your cpu right before it kills itself. It's still happening and this "fixes" nothing. The best thing to do is stop playing, leave negative reviews/comments, and pray they care enough to actually fix it. All these eorkarounds do is give ggg an excuse not to do anything.

It has worked for me so far, for another side of it. It did the usual freeze twice in 6 hours of play, but for the first time ever it didn't lock up the pc and I was able to alt+f4 without anything else happening both times, and continue on.

It's better than nothing, and beats manually toggling the cores before each loading screen/toggling multithreading in my opinion.

Most of us are aware of what that "workaround" (lmao) is doing. Doesn't change anything I said.

I would actually rather turn off multi threading manually, every single time I'm about to load , when I know my cpu is doing very little, than install a program that's going to auto disable cores/multi threading when my cpu is at 99% utilization. No one has a clue what kind of effects that's going to have on your system overtime, especially when its happening hundreds of times every session. Maybe it does nothing, maybe it degrades things. It certainly hasn't been rigorously tested and it's certainly not actually fixing anything. It's simply a workaround. Personally, I'm not doing any of that for a game that has serious documented issues that the developers don't seem to give a damn about.

still hopin for a fix before holiday break
Hello,

It may sound weird, but this worked for me, and I’m posting it because it might help someone else with the same issue.

I saw on TechPowerUp that the Auto HDR feature in Windows 24H2 is causing problems in some games during loading, and I connected this issue to what’s happening in POE2. What happens is that, even though Auto HDR is already disabled here, I was using 10-bit depth in the advanced display settings. It needs to be set to 8-bit depth, and HDR must be disabled. If you can also disable HDR on your monitor settings, that’s even better.

Can you believe it??

I reviewed the game as negative on steam.

This is my review, if you want you can simply copy/paste it.
The game hard crashes taking the OS with it, requiring manual shutdown by using the power button.

GGG has been silent about this issue except a single post in known issues which misdiagnoses the problem as a "Win 11 24H2 issue". GGG requested DxDiags and did not access them. GGG does not mention this issue in the patch notes.

Currently on the Path of Exile 2 Early Access Bug Reports Forum has two main threads:
1) Hard crashing PC locks up: 248 Pages, 2471 Replies, 146069 Views. Created at 7th of December, 2024.

2) POE 2 Complete PC Freeze while loading screen: 216 Pages, 2159 Replies, 204635 Views. Created at 7th of December, 2024.

In comparison the entire "[POE 2] Bugs" thread has 138 Pages, 1370 Replies, 29196 Views.

In terms of ratio, more than half of the replies and views to the forum belong to these two threads.

There are no bugs that are more important than this. This is not "I cannot use X skill bug". This is "improper usage of system APIs by the application" causing "100% CPU utilization" leading to a crash, resulting in "shortened component lifespan and possibly bricking PC".

There are people who have lost their PSUs, SSDs, GPUs, CPUs, Bluetooths, USBs... Any part you can put in a PC, there is someone on the forum that have lost it due to this "bug".

This happens on every kind of OS and hardware.

OS: Happens on Linux, Win10, Win11.
Hardware: AMD and Intel CPUs, AMD and Nvidia GPUs in all types of combination. If a hardware can run it, there is a person with that hardware on those 400 page threads with this crashing bug.
Copy from another thread (not sure why we still have 2 separate threads about the same type of freezes after 2 weeks):
Could be anecdotal evidence, however I'm observing an interesting trend.
1. I have disabled CPU0 and CPU1 cores for POE2 with Lasso so that I dont have to do hard reset every time it freezes.
2. And here's the interesting bit: I could be playing with no problems at all one day, however The next day I'm trying to start the game and it freezes while trying to load up the login screen. I kill it in task manager and start again, it freezes again but now at login screen. I kill it; It freezes at character selection. I kill it; It freezes while logging into character. You get the idea. After like 7-8 freezes/kills like this it finally stops freezing and I can play without an issue for the rest of the evening. Something is being "cached" or loaded and I dont know what, i'm not a game developer. And yes, everytime I load the game, load between levels and etc, I can see in Lasso all 10 (bar the disabled CPU0 and CPU1 for POE) cores jump from barely 10% to 100% right way.

Maybe this phenomenon can give somebody some clue, idk. Just shared by 2 cents.
Edit: my system:
Ryzen 5 7600
RTX 4070 Super
B650m pro
DDR5-6000 CL30

It happens exactly the same to me.
GGG please communicate with us about the issue causing 100% CPU use during load screens causing the OS to freeze.

Do something *pokes with stick*
I encouraged 3 other friends to play it, and I should have kept quiet. Out of 4 people, only 1 can actually launch the game, while the others are all experiencing crashes, including me, with a crash right at launch. We all have different PC configurations.

That finally did it for me. I had to disable HDR on my monitor settings, because windows was forcing 10-bit depth even with auto HDR disabled. I'm playing with zero crashes now. Thank you!
