15-20 mins probably. I browsed the forums while it was processing so not sure about the exact time it finished.

As I can see current usage of the tool is not that friendly for the avarage user. So I changed few lines of code and now it works by double clicking.

Now the tool creates a backup of the Content.ggpk named Content.ggpk.old, then it creates a defragmented copy of it named as Content.ggpk. So there is no additional steps in the process, after running the game without a problem you could delete Content.ggpk.old to save some space.

Windows executable - Source

Usage:
1- Copy the tool to your Path of Exile directory.
2- Double click it and wait for it to finish
3- Run the game to check if everything is working fine.
4- If so delete Content.ggpk.old to save some space.

Spoiler
This was the first time I had my hands on a ruby code. Thankfully I only changed 2-3 lines of code but if there is a way that it could be done more efficiently. Experienced ruby developers should feel free to make appropriate changes.

Could you update your first post with this? It will be easier to find.

And thank you for this wonderful tool. From 6,51GB to 3,77GB in just 15 minutes. That's one hell of a diet!

The defragger is kind of old now. Does it need to be maintained/updated, or is the nature of the defragger such that it will always work perfectly for the latest version of PoE?

Don't suppose anyone can answer this yet?

I don't know if it'll ALWAYS work, but I just used it on my game and can say that it appears to still work for now.
Thanks Zoxc and ignarsoll. The game seems to be loading faster now.

Probably not. You need to run it from the command prompt.

The absolutely easiest way to do this is if you copy the .exe to your PoE folder (rightclick the shortcut on your desktop -> "Open file location" gets you there fast)

On Win7 (Vista too?)

1: Shift + Rightclick in the PoE folder (Anywhere in the window except on files/folders)
2: Select "Open command window here", the command prompt will open directly in this folder
3: In the command prompt type: ggpk_defragment.exe Content.ggpk Content2.ggpk
4: Press enter and wait it'll take a few minutes
5: Once done click on the Content.ggpk file and rename it to something else (eg. Content.ggpk.bak)
6: Rename the Content2.ggpk that got created to Content.ggpk and you're done

Might wanna include a guide on the first page :)

Someone DEFINITELY needs to edit this mans post right here into the OP

I'm fairly sure it will work indefinitely. So long as GGG continues to use the ggpk as an archive, which seems pretty damn likely. We'll certainly hear about it if they completely rework the Content.ggpk system.

Once you've confirmed the game loads properly, you can keep it as a backup, or delete it. I'd just delete it, 99.9% of the time you don't need it. Worst case scenario you can always download Content.ggpk again from GGG, torrents, or anyone really.
