call them out for explicitly disallowing the interaction of this item with Sire of Shards
That did not happen. For the reasons I have already explained, what Sire of Shards does cannot make a be a nova skill and thus work with this.

We did not explicitly disallow this. It just natually didn't work, and we would have had to do a lot more work to explicitly allow that interaction - the item would have had to be worded differently (something along the lines of "Nova Spells and Spells that fire Projectiles in a Nova...", which is longer and confusing), the amount of implementation work would have been significantly bigger, there would have been tricky balance questions, and it was outside the scope of what the item was for from a design standpoint - part of the design behind the item would have been less well served by adding that extra case, for reasons I can't get into yet because they relate to other stuff we haven't announced.

The rewording of "prjectile nova" in stat descriptions was a side thing that took less than 5 minutes. We needed a tag on Nova skills for the item to work, and no-one could come up with anything that really fit other than using "Nova". So we reworded things that were using that word for a different mechanic.

I get it and I appreciate your candor. However, until your further clarifications in this thread, the clear implication with Sire of Shards' existing text of firing socketed gems in a nova would make one think that socketing a spell into SoS would then make it a nova spell. So, finding out that is not the case certainly makes it seem like this is being explicitly disallowed, because the inference - while clearly needing code and not able to be slapped in on a whim "naturally" - is not as it appears. Now that we have clearly defined Nova Spells and know the text on SoS is changing you can defend this, but again, speculation and hype built quickly based on just an image.

Of course, the slightest hint of future possibilities of such interactions helps. Anyway, sorry for grinding your gears, I know you have better things to do.

What? SoS clearly does not do that nor would anyone think that, it shoots PROJECTILES IN A NOVA or out from all directions from your character
You guys are badgering a dev about game mechanics over a wording problem.

nova makes more sense then "shoots projectiles in all directions from your character"

You all know how SoS works why would it make sense to have any interaction with a non projectile spell

Why would this ever work with sire of shards?

Its not intuitive or even remotely something that makes sense

NOVAS ARE NOT PROJECTILES

SIRE OF SHARDS
Socketed Gems fire Projectiles in a Nova

Idk what you people are crying about, in no way shape or form would it make sense that the ring works with SoS. just because it says NOVA in the sire text

Who said novas are projectiles?

And you quoted SoS yourself... so if you socket a projectile spell into SoS, you'd think it would become a nova spell, yes? since you're now using it to cast your projectile spell... in a nova? That's what it's doing. That's how it works.

It's only after the information we've learned in this thread that this has actually become incorrect relative to this ring, come Friday.

So because you assumed something and were wrong you're getting all up in a fuss about it and acting like a child.

Sire of Shards says nothing about turning the spell into a "nova spell", it says it fires the projectile in a nova. As has already been explained to you.

Edit: So how does Sire of Shards not add a hidden "Nova" tag?
Because support effects fundamentally cannot do that.

I mean, if Discharge counts as a "nova" now
Why would it not? it's a fully circular AoE centered on you. It's a perfect example of a nova. I honestly have no idea why you would be surprised by that one.

and Death's Oath works with Arcane Surge by adding a hidden Duration tag...

It does not and never has. The game fundamentally does not work that way. A skill is considered to have the tags matching it's skill gem, and no others. Supports do not modifiy tags.

Wait, what?

I am responding to the statement as a whole, not jsut the first part of it. Arcane Sruge does apply to Death's Oath, and this affects which other supports can apply.
It does not do this by adding a hidden Duration tag

Makes sense now, thanks for clarification, Mark :)
Arcane Surge basically just adds a duration component to the skill, rather than adding a hidden tag, which other compatible supports can then make use of. Pretty sure the tags we see are largely just informational so we know what can work with what at a core level. I don't think the visual tags themselves explicitly allow/disallow interactions.
I have a pretty good sense of humor. I'm not German.

For anything relating to supporting, this is correct.

However, modifiers like this one explicitly identify skills by their tags, and so these are influenced by tags. This is why supports not actually changing the tags of skills is relevant.
Yeah, was only referring to how skills are supported. But thanks for clarifying.

I feel bad about ppl doing a league starter for this ring and then it ends up being super rare and costs an arm and a leg.
