Side by side graph showing player retention on Steam for the last 3 leagues

Most people I know quit because there is nothing to aim for anymore. You whip out 50c for your cyclone build and it can do everything in the game. What should motivate people to improve their builds if some skills are so strong that gear is irrelevant?

This is supposed to be an ARPG. Sometimes it feels like the rpg part is completely gone. If you want to keep people playing make it worthwhile to make a char better again. Not this power comes from the skill you pick bullshit.

Well... depends on point of view. For me, for instance, there is still something to do. I'm setting up some goal and I'm pushing forward to reach the goal. That's it. For now it is +4 bow. Previously it was 40% ED helmet and so on and so forth. Actually after all only fun is the point and I still have tons of fun in this league.

This is the very first league ever i quit half way through.
It was fun for a month but after delve/betrayal/synth it just felt like a step down.
In those leagues you always had a sense of progression you were always building towards something it felt, legion is just a repeat of breach and not very interesting.

For me Synthesis was exactly like that

Unless you are in the "upside down". Just finished binge watching Stranger Things season 2 (crap... they killed Sam... err Bob!). For those who don't know the "upside down" is everyone south of the equator which is wintertime everywhere at the same time.

Necessity may be the mother of invention, but poor QoP in PoE is the father of frustration.

The data showed by Gaardean was a lot clearer.

He took the steam data, found here.

Either way, the take away message was that Legion had the 3rd worst retention.

Only Synthesis and Incursion were worst.

this is interesting if actually true, considering I've seen the servers always busy and every single town with always people, 820's very active and globals well always global.

My experience has been the same as yours....

The issue is that there's no way to distinguish between "long-term player retention" and "new player retention".

If PoE gets some crazy shout-out on all the gaming websites being like "this game is so cool" and then tens of thousands of newbies show up, can't figure it out, and quit, that's awful retention.

Personally, from my experience in 820 and in my 100+ person guild, I believe that Legion is the second best long-term player retention league since Breach, better than even Delve and behind only Betrayal (which was, as pointed out in the OP, so good because many league mechanics came back in excellent form all at once, not because Betrayal as a mechanic was great. During Betrayal League, even Standard was super, super active, which is what really boosts those numbers).

But for new players? Probably pretty intimidating to just die all the time to rares. "Welp, guess I'll just quit". I can imagine that. This game isn't made for people who don't already know how to play ARPGs.
That's an iffy proposition. Legion represents quite a narrow focus on a couple of builds almost to the exclusion of everything else. The data doesnt support it either, unless your saying that Legion had worse new player retention than synthesis.

Your also getting natural drop off for long term players who arbitrarily quit irrespective of league by virtue of finding something else to do/play, or who alternate leagues because playing PoE all day every day forever is not fun.

I'm expecting the next league to suffer prematurely due to some people using it as their skip league with the expectation they'll play the main 4.0 expansion + league.

As a new player I can definitely say, if Legion was the league they released the PS4 version with I wouldn't have liked the game nearly as much. I was blown away with Synthesis. I couldn't believe they could just whip up a side quest basically that took so much interaction and thought in just a few months.

Then I got to my first boss in it, and got savagely raped repeatedly. I fell in love with the game then. These bosses are pushovers compared to that Synthesis one. I don't know if there were more. (Maraketh boss 1st form is a piece of shit though. Vine Snare needs to be removed from the game.)
Need a new signature, cuz name change. I dunno though. I guess this seems fine. Yeah, this is good.

I'd argue the real problem with this league is the fact that HH farmers broke it.

The league's endgame has nothing to offer for people that don't have said builds, except feeling at a huge disadvantage if you let it affect you. This results in the feeling of wasted time, worthless drops, and ultimately nothing interesting to do.

i am enjoying the league, pushing to 100 and 40/40 now, but:

- lamest endgame ever - your endgame this league is resetting monolith (if you even remotely care about efficiency) OR just hanging around if hh carry has a pocket resetter... LOL

- most of playerbase are farming one t2 map and this farming is similarly rewarding (profit per hour) as farming red maps. and, this is basically harbour bridge betrayal farming & quarry sulphite farming shit all over again. some may say how this affects you directly, i would answer that it affects economy a LOT.

- most of playerbase (like 60%) are playing one skill (in the game like path of exile with basically unlimited build variety), i dont care at all, but if i was a developer i will be ashamed.

so im kinda ok as a player, but generally speaking this league is a complete failure, im wondering what the fuck balancing team were doing all this time.
dead game
bring back 3.13
