Time Capsule from PoE Closed Beta -- a classic PoE vs D3 thread circa 2012
@CharanJaydemyr: people bash D3 in-game?
lol :) First thing I did when I played the game was to disable global chat. Most of the time, there are too much spams. I was a little more tamed a few weeks ago and I gave some feedbacks and tried to improve the game (while I was already feeling I didn't want to play anymore, but I was grateful to be in the beta and I wanted to help GGG). I did my share of feedbacks and bug reports, then I stopped playing altogether because I couldn't stand the shitty mindset around D3 here. I wasn't enjoying PoE anymore and I was trying to do my best to not flame about the game, but they didn't seem to care here. I came back because I received an email about the open beta, I wanted to check if anything has changed since I left, but nothing has changed (what a surprise :) ) I don't really care anymore what people think, even if I'm still arguing here, but it sadden me they don't understand it could hurt the devs in the end. There will be some kind of clash if they keep on bashing D3 because a lot of people will enjoy it. If they come here to see this hipsters community, they will leave quickly. So yeah... I don't play PoE anymore, and there's no point for me to post in beta aswell, I already did my job and gave plenty feedbacks already. @Tagek: I didn't play HoN, but it seems the engine was better to me. More lighting and normal maps, better particle effects. But I say that based on video. But I heard the community was shitty and there are some game design I didn't like so... I didn't play it. " Please forgive me, then. I had no idea what condition these fora were in when I arrived and threw my two cents (give or take) into the mix. I certainly had no intention of parroting others who disliked D3 and thus drew fire for it -- I actually rarely think past 'oh hey, this is what I want to say, so I'll say it' when it comes to things I really care about. Rather, not say -- type. Naturally I'm a lot more reticent and careful before showing my hand in real life, and I think that's just being considerate. You should really only speak your mind when you're certain someone listening will give a crap. And that's what I assumed I'd find here, this (like it or not) alternative to Diablo 3, to Diablo 2, to whatever HNSRPG (can we call it that?) you care to name. The lack of instant bashing of my post encouraged me further, and even its critics didn't come across as knee jerks. I'm a sucker for prolonged discussion, because it's increasingly rare in most corners of the Internet, let alone gaming ones. But if this thread is somehow detrimental to the proliferation and sharing of Path of Exile, I sincerely regret making it. https://linktr.ee/wjameschan -- everything I've ever done worth talking about, and even that is debatable.

Right. You weren't trying to do that at all Mr. "I am gonna play PoE over Diablo 3 big thread title". Also all that rating on d3 rune system not being what you dream of it to be... that not an attack on D3 no sir never.
Is there any thread where I can read reasonable debates/reviews about PoE without D3 comparisons? |

" Interesting points i must say. Great to se more ppl that can actually just have a nice conversation with constructive rather then bashing words :) Cant have to much Junk in your Stash Last edited by SwedishTavern#6176 on Mar 30, 2012, 5:37:14 AM

" No, it's not. It's my reaction to Path of Exile in light of Diablo 3 from the viewpoint of a...wait, didn't you read even the title of the thread? Or did you just see 'OMG BIG THREAD MENTIONING D3 VS POE' and assume it was a blind attack? I thought I put a tl;dr disclaimer at the beginning. At. The. Beginning. To answer your question, probably not. Even the one recently posted that sort of 'bashed' PoE in comparison to D3...uses D3 as a comparison. EDIT: here: http://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/24021 The comparison is inevitable. I acknowledge that straight off, but then end up comparing PoE to Diablo 1 and Diablo 2 far more than I do to Diablo 3. If. You. Had. Read. My. Original. Post...you would have seen that what drove me to Path of Exile was discontent with Diablo 3. Diablo 3 came first. It had its chance to impress me and it failed to do so. Now had I played Path of Exile first, then found Diablo 3, and THEN said why I prefer Path of Exile over Diablo 3 without any real reason other than to compare the two, then I think that would have been far less fair of me. That would have been bashing. That would have been trolling, even. What I did was say 'you've all heard of this game. It bears the hopes for so many of us. But it has let me down, and here is why. You may not agree. I'm not objectively right. I'm just saying what I experienced. What did you experience?' You don't start meaningful discussions with bashing or trollery. You just draw witless fire and cause problems. I did neither. Take care. https://linktr.ee/wjameschan -- everything I've ever done worth talking about, and even that is debatable. Huh. " I LOVE YOUR MOVIES. I have them running when I'm meant to be doing other things, when I say to myself 'oops, shouldn't play PoE, should be writing...ooh pretty.' https://linktr.ee/wjameschan -- everything I've ever done worth talking about, and even that is debatable.

" I hope you don't my barging in at this point, but I must say I have found the general chat in PoE to be... well, entertaining for the most part. This is my impression (and bear in mind, I've only been in the beta for three weeks): People trade. People ask, and mostly get reasonable answers. Sometimes, a dev hops in, and conversation is had. But bashing on Diablo III? I think I saw that once. Now, I'm not saying you are not right. I'm sitting in Europe, and probably am playing at "New-Zealand-ish off-hours" mostly. I honestly don't mind the chat in PoE, and that's coming from someone who usually disables general chat in every MMO the first chance he gets. I do agree however: Mindlessly bashing any game annoys me, too. That's why I even write many of my postings: Because I do like a good discussion, and "If you like D III you are dumb" is not the hallmarks of one. And, by the by: I do try to give both kinds of feedback: Things I like/love, and things I feel could be better/need an overhaul. Just gushing over a game does nothing to improve it, and is hurtful in the long run. But so is mindlessly criticizing it. 12/12/12 - the day Germany decided boys are not quite human.

" Yeah, HoN seems very pretty on a youtube video, but when playing it on 1680x1050 it doesn't look nearly as good. :P Also, at the guy above me here^. Almost any time I log on to POE I see people bashing D3, literally. There also seem to be a fair number of people that don't remember they were ever noobs, but there are a few nice people I've seen though. @CharanJaydemyr: heh, in fact, I just saw you were the original poster ^^;
I wasn't targetting anyone in particular, but when I saw the title of your thread, I still thought "damn, another one like that..." because there was already a bunch of threads bashing D3 ^^; But you are articulate, it's a lot better to read your post than the usual "if u lyk D3 u suk noob!" ^^; I re-read your post, and it seems your problem with D3 is the removal of the gem system. So, after playing PoE, what do you think of the skills? Do you think you have more freedom? Which character did you play? As for D3, did you read the description of other skills (runed or not)? @Avireyn: I think I disabled it because of the trade spam, GGG should add a trade channel. I enabled it when I did the HC ladder race and it was fine. My problem with mindless bashing is that I could do it quite easily with PoE, but I don't do it because it's pointless and it will just annoy the guys who enjoy the game here. I gave my feedbacks to GGG in the beta forum and I think it's enough, no need to troll about it. @Tagek: heh ok :) Champion spotlight looked good ^^; How about Dota2 then, it looks good aswell. " You're dead on. I was absolutely in love with the proposed D3 skill rune system. It's not hard to imagine why: these runes didn't just buff a skill, they dramatically transformed it. Speaking just about the Wizard: Magic missiles turning to fire, magic weapon *also* turning to fire, a point-blank AoE changing to instant damage rather than DoT, meteor *changing to ice*...stuff like that is the drug of choice for a thematically-driven altaholic. A fire-based melee wizard was my first plan, and I had it all planned out. Excel spreadsheets and all. And yeah, I spent a long time going through the skills/rune/passives of all five D3 classes. I had a passive sword-swinging Demon Hunter planned, and played it through the beta easily enough. It was really pushing it, but still, sword-swinging hooded speedy acrobatic badass had to be attempted! Monk, Barbarian and Witch Doctor had a lot less flexibility in my eyes, but they were very, very fun to play. I enjoyed PLAYING Diablo 3: it's a very fluid, exciting experience. But I wasn't enjoying playing the characters I'd made. Does that make sense? It wasn't fulfilling for me. I was holding out for runes, and then... Naturally none of that is happening anymore, not the way I planned it, not the way it was offered. I've explained that much. It's fact, not opinion. History. So to PoE: I think the skills are for the most part stock-standard Diablo skills. Hasty melee attacks, AoE melee, fire rain, ice projectiles, leap attacks, multi-arrow shooting...all that. But since they're attached to gem and not class, the combination possibilities are instantly greater. And the support gems modify them in fairly interesting ways. So if you want, you can say the active skills aren't that impressive, but what you can do with them are. In that, I feel like I have a lot of freedom. I do believe the classes are still distinct and that 'skill choice' is not the only way to define a class. I first played a Duelist, not really shaking the passive tree too hard: sword, armguard, melee skills, focus on fire damage (...can you tell I like fire damage in these games? Burning DoT rocks my world). I have created Charan in many contexts, and certain constants must remain: fire damage, sword, agility, life regen and stealth/teleporting preferable. PoE really offers all of those. Right now I'm hopping between Aen (A Templar dual-wand user), SavageSeamstress (rapier-wielding Ranger), Orchid_Witherheart (dagger-witch: she's my most challenging character!) and Kajino_Kitaro (fire-exclusive Duelist with firestorm on LMB). I love 'em all. I love that this game has enough wiggle room for me to make them. I don't do it just to be contrary or difficult. These are established characters I've tried elsewhere. They are old friends who had no place in D3. ...They'll have no place in GW2 either, for the most part, but I can easily imagine Charan as a thief. Shadowstep sword+dagger attacks, fiery sword...hood...oh yeah, bring. it. on. https://linktr.ee/wjameschan -- everything I've ever done worth talking about, and even that is debatable.
